Title: Pre-ashes badinage!
Post by: FattusCattus on June 30, 2015, 10:57:03 AM
Unless I'm missing something, there doesn't seem to be much pre-ashes banter between the two parties on here. I appreciate the Gerry and Vic may have gone back to troll-school, which does limit some of the output, but I had expected a few more strutting antipodean peacocks, puffing their chests out and crowing triumphantly about inserting the new ball firmly up the collective English rectum.

Is it that our earthy Southern-Hemisphere chums feel that it is a foregone conclusion and no teasing is required? are they secretly scared that this new, pre-pubescent English team may give them a fight, has Glen McGrath forgotten how to count to five (or indeed 'nil').

We were so woeful last time, I was expecting some heavy flak - and on the other side, I haven't heard any feeble-minded, lily-livered whinging Poms come the 'Raw Prawn' either?

What's happening to all you protagonists - I'll bet it's because they've got a woman in charge of the country, and a lot of their players now seem to be using grooming 'products'.

It's not how it was in my day!

I don't think anybody on the England side thinks we will do that well. I think it's more Englands weaknesses than Australia being that great. Can't help thinking we are a couple of years away from being a real force, then again Anderson/Broad could be retiring, so may be longer.

As for banter, I think most of our Australian cousins on the forum are a bit more respectful than some of the Australian Media/Commentators. Most of the discussions has been sensible and constructive. I'm sure it will all kick off when the real action starts  ;)

I think the Aussies are too busy removing those ghastly stars from our wonderful flag to engage in pre-ashes banter......

Only stuff I have seen is the wood/Watson thing which seems to have been blown up by the media because there is nothing else going on!

Anyone off to Cardiff day 1?

Looking forward to it bar the fact apparently the trains are on strike!

I'm a newcomer to the forum and was looking forward to getting involved in some Ashes banter.........especially considering I'm an Aussie!!!!
I'm wondering why Mark Wood would be so keen on telling a story that basically ends up with Shane Watson smashing his short ball? That'll memory will rattle him Mark.......keep that coming, haha.
Why are the poms so keen on talking about the number 1 batsman in the world as a weakness?

Because we are clutching at straws mate!

I think the wood thing was blown up by the press and then wood was asked to explain what happened. Sounds like a complete non event tbh but all it means is wood will get peppered himself (which I'm sure was always on the cards tbh). Just want the cricket to start as the media are just filling the vacuum caused by no cricket with rubbish stories

I guess it's just our Australian way to let our actions speak for themselves and not get caught up in any chit chat...  :D

Quite right Wickets - a shy, retiring nation - never ones to let their mouths run away with themselves! :)

Yep, going on day 1 and Day 3. Also going by train so fingers crossed it doesn't happen

Fattus, I'm blushing too much to respond....  :)
At the end of the day, it's not whether you win or lose but how the game is played!

Aww that right Wickets, now let's all prepare ourselves for a 'F*****g broken arm'!

4-0 Aussies
Our bowling will be just too good, Nathan Lyon to dominate the English.

Our bowling is certainly a great strength, even with Harris' little setback.

Here's to hoping Mitch Marsh gets the nod ahead of Watto. He needs to put in a good effort with the ball to get in though I think. Need more of us quality West Aussies in there!!!

I think if we get on top early with the bat in each game we will win, looking for a big series from Starc to show he does have a ticker in the longer forms. Pretty excited for some late nights coming up - the missus not so excited!

Aussies are getting a lot of batting practice against some ropey bowling attacks in the warm ups. Kent's attach last week was probably worse than some in the Kent premier league last week. Assume that as the Aussies scored 440 in a day against Essex there's isn't that great either

Essex opened the bowling with Jesse Ryder. Take from that what you will!

If Mitchell starc bowlers anything like he has done in the last year, Then I fear for us English. Could be a long summer.

Lyon to dominate the English
we will see
Seem to remember your poor England quote before the ODIs against the excellent kiwis.

Do you not think he will? I think the Mitchell Johnson fear factor (yes I said fear, haha) is going to provide some extremely spinner friendly wickets. If Moeen Ali plays he may even take a wicket.

Will Joe Root make it through the entire series this time round?

Of course they are poor, you can't ignore years of being tripe because of one close series in home conditions. Test cricket is another beast all together, I have seen nothing against either the WI or NZ to suggest England are a good test side.

If England are to be competitive I think it will all come down to Root, he is the one English player that would make the Aussie side. He should be skipper ahead of Cook in my opinion.

Well it's not long now before the first match which is always a good indicator for the series so we shall see.

See stokes has said the Aussies aren't invincible in the press today. Whilst I agree I can't help but think he's just given the Aussies his first send off when he gets out

I quite agree - this is possibly the time to stay quiet, and let our actions speak louder than words in the first test.

But ho hum! When has the ECB PR machine been anything other than a disaster?

Essex did pretty well today with that bat, anyone been down to the game? Is the wicket a road and a relatively small ground making the high amount of runs seem higher? Or just good batting and bad bowling?

I'd love to sit in on an ECB PR meeting.

However.....nothing will ever be quite as good as predicting 5-0(mcgrath), treading on a ball and getting driven off in a golf cart before the game and then us racking up 400 in a day-and of course we won the greatest ever series 2-1 !!

Yes yes yes we know it was 2005 !!! :)

I agree, it's not the players though, it's not as though they ring a media outlet themselves to give quotes. The boards and media want a build up, the media ask dumb loaded questions, if a player offers and honest opinion he is bagged, if a player goes the generic robot route he is bagged.
