Just recieved my Private Bin from James today.
Its an absolute beast
Grade 1 English Willow
8 grains, a few slight marks
Weight: around 2lb 10oz with a very good pickup
Ping is mint
James is good to deal with, and in case of custom charges he marks the price of the package down alot so they are lower.

Nice bat. But the way these Lavers play is even better than they look!
They are a classy bat - enjoy!! ;D
-
How much did it cost you ?
-
lol i guessed it wouldn't be long before how much was it popped up.
-
Why "private bin" seems an odd name to call a model of bat? or is it merely as the willow is placed in reserve for selected bats??
-
is it the cosmetically not as nice willow?
-
I think its a wine reference- its where the "best" goes.
-
Yeah its wine reference
-
looks nice Nicky boy. I can't wait to see you lift it. HaHa
-
Very nice, if only I could afford one! How much did it cost?
-
Is this lavers top bat?
-
no 3rd best..
Signature
Reserve
Private Bin..
-
The Private Bin are made from the top 20% of willow. So it is the same as the wine reference!
And they are around £280 - so not cheap. But they are seriously good bats!
-
£280 for one bat??
-
Id want someone included to do the running between the wickets for that price as well as mop my brow after each shot! I'm guessing a decent slice of that must be the postage cost though to get it over here from NZ (in the region of £30 i would guess) but even then it's still a £250 bat.
Each to their own though, something is only worth what another person is willing to pay for it.
-
yup, and the signature and reserve are still more.. I would wonder if the price difference between the private bin and lets say H4L's, Redbacks and Vantage's LE is worth it.. I understand James has alot of experience but is it really worth that much more??
-
I purchased a Private Bin ta couple of years ago, and I can remember paying around £200 for it, plus £30 for knocking in.
So price has gone up a fair amount. To be fair, it's an excellent bat!
-
how would your previous Private Bin compare to your new Redback?
-
Just checked his website now the reserve is £350! The signature is £950!!!!!!!!! - comes in a gun style case (velvet lined) and another bat (private bin) if i dont wanna use the signature! If im paying almost a grand for a bat its getting used for everything!!!
How can that be justified . . . . .
-
Personally my view on a bat is that its an organic form so obviously varies from one to another, paying more doesn't guarantee the ball going further. A Grade one bat which goes well and costs £150 say may outperform a bat that's £280, who knows, you pay your money and you take your gamble!!!
Its not something that is manufactured identically over and over again (apart from the shape when machined) as the wood is different in each bat and there are so many outside factors that can effect it's performance such as pressing, over oiling etc as well.
-
Ok - I used my Laver & Wood Firefly (also Grade 1 and around £230+) last year.
To be honest, the Redback feels nicer than the Private Bin, and arounnd the same quality as the Firefly!
The balance and feel of my Firefly is superb, but then again, so is the Redback! Will be able to give a better assessment once I get my butt in the nets with both bats next month? :-\
-
Iv got nets on thursday but no new bats to try out :-( just a new helmet to give a bash (not literally i hope)! On the hunt for a weighty number tho for a team mate but dont think he will stretch to £280 lol
-
Tom - if you lived closer you would be welcome to try out a few of my bats mate!
Could do well to see how some other makes perform so that you can ensure that your bats are great in comparison.
Not sure what your bats are like, but if you could make them as excellent as your helmets, then you will be laughing! ;D
-
Yeah trying to sort out a UK manufacturer over the next few weeks if possible so putting the job out to tender as such as a few of the Pro's on the international circuit have expressed interest in other kit beyond the helmets so guess who's job it is to find someone who can supply the bats to their spec ::)
P.S if anyone reading this thinks they can cater for this job please email me!! (as will make my job easier as alot of time is being tied up with the helmets at the moment).

I Have to agree.
I just thought actually it would be awesome if Aytek brought out some Protective gear like thigh pads.
When u getting that new style of helmet in tom ?
-
There are a number of decent batmakers out there - in fact on this forum!! ;D
But it must be a pain speaking to a few of them and trying to actually make these decisions!
I'm not sure if it would be humanly possible to have the same quality pads, gloves and bats - in comparison to your helmets.
Thats would be a real accomplishment if you could! And I for one would probablly have the whole kit! 8)
-
off on a tangent from the topic...sorry..Yeh soft goods have a price constraint on them in terms of moving the materials forward, we looked at introducing carbon fibre rods instead of traditional canes which would shave lots of weight off and improved protection but pads would then become very expensive to make and therefore sell as a result.
The In-fl-8r glove which was my dissertation at uni made the gloves safer to help avoid breaking a finger as well and were licensed to CCC to sell under their brand but they didnt market the USP correctly with it to prove it worked and wasnt just a gimmick!
Will get onto these batmakers shortly as a nite owl its easier to get time to email out a few people then!! Wonder what L&W cost prices are lol maybe ill drop them an email and see if they are interested.

Back on topic, James makes excellent classy bats, but it is the normal story at the moment! The pound is a little weak compared with quite a few currencies at the moment! Look at Screaming Cats and Lavers - it akes them all pretty expensive in comparison to the decent custom batmakers!
Will be interested to see if Lavers and SC abts come down in price if the pound starts to get stronger?
