Title: I need help selecting a new bat.
Post by: Jacobmcc123 on August 05, 2015, 11:53:02 AM
I've been looking at a couple of brands and I need some help if anyone has experience with any of these brands. I was thinking of either Redwood players, H4L hellfire pro, Phantom dark edition, B3 bespoke crown grade, Newbery Kudos2 Sps, Woodstock Airstream Players LE, Woodstock Tour De Force Players LE, m&H mh11, Spartan MC LE or Salix Pod finite.
I'm an opener and mainly look to drive through the cover and also cut and pull off length and width. If anyone has any experience with how any of these bats perform I'd appreciate the input and it would help me make a decision for the future.

You mention some very good options there, I doubt you would be disappointed with any! Although I only have personal experience with the H4L and the Newbery!

What did you think of the H4L?

Mine's actually a G1 not a Pro but I love it! Matt @ H4L really knows how to make a bat!

I reckon you're looking to spend a lot of money. If you went a grade down, you'd probably get just as good a bat, plus an additional slush fund for softs and/or coaching.

Used and owned all those brands I would go with either salix or H4L if you fancy Newbery than a few of those will be covered. Pro direct cricket have the original Kudos SPS at £270 which is a good price but personally Salix or H4L never been disappointed with either

I've used Newbery and they've been great. I currently have a Salix Pod and H4L NV. Using the NV this season and scored well with it. I'm not sure its quite up with the Pod yet, but then I do feel all bats take a bit of time to reach their best. Not used any of the others , but you can't go wrong with any of these 3 brands.

I had a redwood, it had a good pickup but was pressed rock solid, if you want a bat to last ages then go for it but I think the forum sponsors would be a different option.

Red ink has excellent service and will make you a bat to suit you for a reasonable price

I would probably go for the phantom dark edition or the salix. Both are brilliantly finished and go like the clappers.  :)

Here's my experience of the brands:

Redwood - Pressed really hard, and was pretty planky.

H4L - All have been impressive performers. I can only imagine how good a Pro grade one will be!

Phantom - Only really heard good things!

B3 - Fantastic bats matched with excellent service. A bit pricey, but make a fantastic bat. Only really experienced the lower grades, which perform exceptionally. (G3 and Butterfly)

Newbery - Great bats, would consider maybe the IJC Platinum because the shape is nice!

M&H - Seen a few Amplus bats, and they are exceptional. I have a slightly altered Amplus from Bulldog, which is very nice. Lovely light pick ups, and they have exceptional response all the way down to the toe. An Amplus shape was what came to mind immediately when reading about your batting position/style.

Spartan - Can't really comment on them... Yet... But they're made by SS, who are fantastic bat makers. (My match bat and the one I've scored most runs with is a £160 SS LE)

Salix - My brother has a Pod Players from a few seasons ago, and it has an exquisite middle. Really well played in, and the bats made by Salix are stunning!

Woodstock - Could be good bats, heard some good reviews! I would go and apply for a 'sponsorship' and get a little discount from what you would pay a retailer. From what I've heard, I'm sure even the likes of @WalkingWicket37 would get one! ;)

You seem to have a good budget for bats, maybe the best option is to get a high grade and a lower grade from the same batmaker. If you contact Jake at Vitas Cricket, he could probably get you sorted out with 2 G1 Custom bats made by Hunts County for around £350! (Around the price of most of the bats you mentioned above!)

I'd recommend affinity as well. I got mine off wickets-then-runs and it is a beauty. I plan to get another one very soon :)

I plan to offload a lot of bats soon as unsure why I bought other brands.

Only ones I'll be keeping are my 2 affinitys(third on the way), my b3s and my gm octane.
Rest in not sure I'll buy again, as the bats themselves and the customer service don't seem to get near the above.

All the Salix bats I've had have been excellent. The H4L have been good. Many people down my way use M&H. They all perform very well but the quality of the finishing is generally poor, particularly considering the price they charge. I am also aware of a number that have had to go back as they have cracked.

I concur. I have a Butterfly 1 Supreme. Picks up like a feather and performs as well as my Salix.
