Title: It's hard to buy a decent bat on eBay.... Isn't it?
Post by: tim2000s on August 10, 2015, 09:18:04 PM
Well I'd beg to differ. For less than £50 (well £47 to be precise) I picked up this beauty which has been well knocked in and used very effectively in a couple of matches. One of the bigger off the shelf scoops of say.

I think if you are buying older model or 'unfashionable' bats there are bargains to be had. That looks a steal for under £50. I got hold of a GM 606 Hero for £20 posted. Hardly had any use at all but not many people like the profile. It's surprisingly good and with 5 straightish grains it serves a purpose! (Cant post pics as it has some alternative stickers on it currently to match some softs)

There's also bargains to be had on Harrow bats.

Just picked up a mjolnir player for 65 quid.the seller didnt know much about it no idea of weight but its old shape.
Looks like its been studded by boots and chucked around by the marks
Its a total gamble could be a great buy or be knackered do awaiting the postman to see how much refurbing i can di myself :)

I have to say my 2006 808 Hero is something I've come to love as once upon a time I really had a disliking for it. The ping is belting and my want for big edges in a bat has now faded and I can now appreciate the convex profile of it. It's not the lightest of pickups due to the shape but it has a reassuring heft about it.

Tim, loving that scoop. My bat buying days are on hold but gn100 is a very common search term still for me. Missed that one though!

If you buy at the right time it is easier. I bought a grade 1 salix praesantia for under 50 quid including postage. It was in perfect condition. Used it for 2 seasons and sold it on for more than twice I paid, It was a lovely bat. I bought in in October/November. I agree with buying unfashionable bats too. I bought a Salix The Edge for under 30 quid. It had a small crack in the toe which was easily repaired, but the small (traditional) edges were not to the liking of most people I guess and that is lovely too. With short blade and long handle it makes a good 20/20 bat. However, some people pay silly money for some rubbish. Would you pay over 150 quid for a second hand bat when you can get a custom made one for only a little more?

Here's the other purchase. A Chase Finback R4 with a compression crack to the toe that a bit of pva will fix. Thirty nicker. Doesn't seem to have been oiled or knocked in properly and also hardly used. Astonishing what you can find if you look carefully. And it's less than 2lb 8oz.

I had my eye on that Chase, why I didn't put a bid in I'll never know, and now I regret the decision not to!  :(

Nice Chase. I must agree, there are still some outstanding buys on eBay.

On getting home last night from 5 days in wet and windy Wales there was a knock on the door it was was the delivery of the GN Kaboom the  46.00 EBay purchase i made last week the bat arrived in its original Packaging ( pics to follow) and the first impression is that it looked a big bat for its size  with 9 straight grains  and a clean face its brand new the willow is grade 2 would have been grade one but  for slight graping near toe and a slither of heartwood on arrival i gave the bat a swing as this was the gamble for me as before  I bid as the seller emailed to say he didn't know the weight knowing the weight could be up to 2 - 14  I then weight the bat as 2 - 8 with a 37 mil max edge and a 59 mil max mil spine.
Theres  the No 34 written in biro  on the shoulder probably a number in a  production batch  and the letter P on both shoulders probably the batmaker.
From maximum spine to maximum edge the bat has a  20mil concaving.
On the left handers outside edge the face has 10mil of heartwood  from the shoulder increasing to 20 mil at the toe
The middle is quite high eight and half inches up from the toe but to me the bat feels bottom heavy as it has quite a thick toe  the mallet bounces of the face okay but sounds a little hard so I will knock it in over the winter also may have to reduce the oval handle at the bottom for a better grip between forefinger and thumb.
