Title: The last bat I'll ever own?
Post by: shane on August 15, 2015, 01:54:57 AM
Okay, so I've been particularly bad (read extravagant) with the bats I've bought this year. Despite this Paul's bats look absolutely stunning and I really wanted one.

Fortunately, with my birthday a couple of weeks back and little else I wanted, a number of the family clubbed together to get me this beauty.

Given the quality of the pictures, it may be worth me considering a camera and photography lessons come christmas.

And alongside the two other additions before the start of this season.

Actually scratch the idea of a camera, what I really need is some batting lessons first so I can feign some semblance of competence and actually make proper use of the bats.  :D

That is a beauty mate! I noticed the face of Paul's bats are not as flat as they were last year. I really rate my butterfly Spectre!

Bit of a beast, coming in at 2lb 15oz, which is 2-3 ounces more than I usually go for. Feels nice in the hand and netted with it for about 30 minutes the other day after knocking in.

We'll see how it goes soon in match conditions  :)

That is a massive spine! How is the pick up on this one?

Certainly feel the dead weight of the bat, but it has a beautiful balance about it. From the limited use I've had of it in the nets so far I'm really happy with it. As a lower middle/late order batsman I'm never going to need to bat 40 overs with it.

I haven't had too many other bats as a reference, but picks up better than an old hunts county steelback I have in 2lb 9oz (for some reason really struggle with that one), but less well than my H4L Tempo in 2lb 11oz, which is my current favourite.

Still doing some work on it with the mallet, but performance off the middle is already amazing and unlike any other bat I've had.

Hoping to get a half decent innings in the middle with it before the end of the season to properly judge how its performing.

I have a Supreme in Butterfly 1 grade. It's performance is excellent and picks up beautifully. No one believes it weighs 2.12. My only critisisms are that the handle is quite thick and I would like a more oval shaped handle. I know that the grip it comes with is a thick grip and I could put a thinner one on. Having said that I have small hands (I use youth size gloves) . That said I will order another one after Christmas. In my opininion the stickers for the Supreme  model look awesome too.

the handles can be turned to specific sizes its part of my custom service and I do it for many top players especially on the top hand

Paul would changing a grip to a thinner grip alter the balance or pick up at all?

It can have a slight effect on feel yes as silly as it may sound but if it does just add some surgical tape or thin lead tape around the very top of the handle to counter act it. We used to and county players still do play around with all sorts of grip combinations and carry a myriad of different tapes and glues etc to keep up with bat care and feel

Funny thing about changing grip for me is that sometimes a thicker spiral or double thickness chevron will make it 'feel' worse and heavier for me than a thin chevron. It's entirely subjective to the person, personally I find that keeping your grip set-up consistent means that there's less chance of you not getting the preferred feel from replacing grips.

The pros will tinker until they make it spot on for them, some more fussy than others. I know some bat makers used to re collaborate their scales for certain fussy individuals to enable them to take the real weight out the equation and get the player to get the right feel but making it appear as though they had the weight they wanted. Mind games
