Hi Guys,
Just bought these bats, just for a little bit of fun can I have some thoughts on what people would grade these bats? Don't worry I know grading isn't always done on looks.

Pic was taken on an iPhone so I appreciate it isn't the best quality :) will also add a number of grains if people cant count them due to the picture quality.

1,2,2,2 although they all look great.
Caveat that that the last one could be a 1 and that this is using the Wrights suggested grading

Agree, just depends on how you view heartwood and blemishes. The blemish on the middle 2 push it down another grade. However, that left of centre bat has some grains on it! The one right of centre isn't bad either.
-
1,2,3,2. I like the look of the second from the left. I had a kippax leviathan grade two like that. Lots of grains and two thirds heart wood. Even at 2lb 6oz it went like a train.
-
Based on straightness of grains the more colour and the more marks there is the lower the grade
1 3 3 2 probably harsh on number 2.

Just out of interest, are they all the same maker?
-
I'm surprised at the generously high grading given the 3 pages of nonsense (admittedly not from the same people) on the grading of a H4L in my forum section recently.
-
Thanks for the replies guys, keep them coming
to answer the question, yes they are all from the same maker and we're all graded the same from that maker...

MSR?

Incorrect @Alvaro
Thats another one guys feel free to have a guess at the maker as well, will release clues at points if no one gets it.
-
There all grade 2 and they came from b3
Or
there all g1 and from gunn and Moore
(I don't know why but they seem like they came from Nottingham....)
-
Interesting comment that @smilley792
-
Grade four
-
@smilley792 Was correct, these bats were made in Nottingham....
and were indeed made by GM, he was also right with his grading guess. All the bats are graded as original/grade one, which tbf did surprise me a little. I've seen an 808 with the same sort of grain structure as the bat second left, as well as the 808 picture on their website looking similar. As someone has mentioned it comes down to whether people like heartwood or not and i'm not particularly fussy.
All 4 seem to tap up well and sound the same except for the far right bat which seems just a little bit better.
Thanks for the replies guys was interesting to read them :)

Grade 1 and then all grade 2 / 3 but looks count for nothing
-
My first thought was Gm just by looking at the shape of the toe. Inhave to admit however, I thought it was perhaps an ole, original and a couple 909s there.
-
Not sure why but they looked gm. But for some reason I wasn't sure someone would buy 4 hence saying b3.
Are they all yours or for others?
And this is my 808.

I think is better than a few of yours? Strange grading
-
@smilley792 I've bought them for myself and clubmates whether they actually move on to club mates or not i'm unsure at the moment hah, two are mogul's and the other two are sigma's. Found them for a nice price and can send them back so I thought it was worth the risk.
That looks lovely! looks like the middle right but with a few less grains and minus a blemish, I think id rather have yours. My favourite ever bat was an icon 808, theres definitely some bargains to be had lower down from GM.
-
Get some proper pics and profile shots up plus weights. Never seen a sigma outside of a gm catalogue!
Wouldn't mind one of I could find one both heavy enough and a bargain!
-
I'll chuck some up tomorrow try and get some good light for the pics...
The middle is really high, but the craftsmanship of the scoops and "holes" is really good and does make the pick up super light. But I suppose that would be the same with any bat I received in those weights. According to the GM website sigma's come in 2.9 and above but I actually received a 2.7 and 2.85 so that will obviously help the pick up a little :-[ and good luck with the hunt for a heavy one :-[
-
When I first saw the Sigma in the Gm catalogue I thought it was just a mid middled bat with a bit of pretty machined concaving. So I was really quite surprised when I first saw it in person Land it was really quite duck billed and high.

Hardly nonsense also most agree on this thread grade 1 willow should be blemish and colour free with no knots and straight grains.

I wouldn't be happy if I ordered Original/ LE and got bats 2,3 and 4

No nor would I regardless of what batmakers retailers etc say.
-
1,3,3,2
This... Original/LE bit generous for me

Some lovely grains there. Personally, would probably grade the far left and far right as G1, and middle 2 as G2. I'm not massively fussed with blemishes, not a huge fan of heartwood though. Would only grade the left one as an OLE personally, but then again, I don't work for GM so can't say that this should be graded as this, and that be graded as that!
I personally quite like the middle right one, the grains just seem to stick out a little more, and the stain isn't a bad one and gives it a bit of character. Tends to be a slightly harder area with graping like that, and often responds a bit better!

Good point there Chad re the middle right one the more promeinent the grains the better the quality of the willow.

I've got a 303 that I stripped down that looks a similar grade to the middle left!

Lucky you, middle left looks awesome! Albeit with a small blemish, but still.

I think that 303 looks stunning!!
for the grain lovers
Bat 1 - 7
Bat 2 - 34
Bat 3 - 13
Bat 4 - 11
They're all growing on me as they sit in my living room haha, but i'm sure any brand new shiny bat would
