Title: Buying weights for a home gym - what's the cheapest way?
Post by: Akewstick on August 27, 2015, 10:39:34 AM
I'm after a 7ft barbell, about 100kg in weight to start off with, squat stands (Would like a rack but too expensive) and a bench.

Doing everything on ebay on the cheap I think I can get a 7ft barbell for £50, squat stands for around £40, all the weights I'm hoping to do piece-by-piece and get mismatched 2nd hand plates for not much more than £1 per kilo and annoyingly I can't see benches for less than £40 but surely that's not right.

All in all I'm looking at £250, which perhaps isn't as bad as I might've thought, but are there any tricks to getting cheap weight plates anyone knows?

I've looked at cheap and nasty and they're still well over £1 per Kg, gone to big wholesale gym suppliers and asked if they can sell me a small amount - same result.

Is it going to just be scouring ebay until someone is selling some old stuff cheap?

Gumtree might be a good shout, or Freecycle.

You'll get what you pay for. I'd suggest an Olympic bar and plates. Iron lates will do, rubber covered ones are nice but not necessary. Also look to get a power cage if you can, something with a chinning bar and dipping handles. You can do enough with a flat bench, but depends on what you want to do (ie inclines/declines) just make sure it's solid. Believe me if you buy cheap now and start to get into it you'll be looking to upgrade in a years time. When I lived in the UK decathlon were the best place I found for plates (over 3 years ago now so may have changed), but you're right you'll be looking at around £1 per kg.

Check out Stronglifts 5x5, not only is it a decent starter program but it has lots of info about what gear to get.

Good luck

Not weights but an alternative to buying heavier weights. Have a look at a total gym or similar. You can pick them up pretty cheap on eBay.
