Anyone done these before?
As someone who's not played properly in 13/14 years and playing a few games more recently it's pretty clear I need some help on everything...
-
Id love to do something like this, Friday night though!
-
No, but a bunch of West London based forumites usually net there in the New Year. As we all know everything, we can give you all the coaching you'll ever need!
Whereabouts are you based?

Clayton Street, literally 2 minutes from the Oval hence it being wonderfully ideal. I've booked for the first week anyway so we'll see how it goes.
As for New Year nets consider me down for it!
-
Bumping this. Looking at the booking thing there's still 29 out of 30 spaces available, some 1-1 with my awful ability will do the coaches head in, ha
-
I used to go this in the late 90s early 2000s. Definitely recommended. Coaches quickly sorted you by ability and had you in a group suited you. There was a mix of specific coaching drills, eg one to help you play on the leg side, or back foot drives, and a decent amount of time batting in the nets.

Sounds perfect for me then as I'm pretty poor. Quite excited about it actually! Need to buy a helmet before next week though;

This Friday for anyone still interested, got all the kit I need now!

What size group were you thinking of getting together? Friday night's not ideal but might be interested.
-
I don't know anyone off here, just going as a lone person and see how it goes...
-
Have they told you how long the session would be for? and what is usually covered in these sessions?

I am sure we can help there as we are literally just down the road from you! http://www.itsjustcricket.co.uk/map (http://www.itsjustcricket.co.uk/map)

OK though if you feel the urge to share the costs for some repeat sessions I'm sure there would be lots of interest here in having a small group along. I know I'd love a bit of proper coaching before club nets get going next year.
-
I haven't actually been to these before, strangely (seeing how local I am to The Oval!) People tell me there is a big mix of abilities and some of the better players have voiced frustration when they are put in a net with the lesser bowlers, but apparently the coaching part of it is very good. I like that you don't need to commit to all of them and can just turn up whenever you like, so I may try to come to a few this year.
-
If we want to sort something outside of the coaching just for ourselves, I reckon 6 people for a batting and bowling net or 3-4 people for a net with a bowling machine.
I'd be up for that, and I'm sure we could advise each other on where we are going wrong.

What would be the charges per head for 6 guys netting at the Oval using a bowling machine?
-
I think we're heading slightly off topic and maybe should sort it in the other thread, but I imagine for a 2 hour session it's be a tenner each? I've honestly no clue but I'm game.
-
Quite right Dicky - I apologise.
-
My fault, sorry for hijacking the thread guys :-[

For a first timer this was pretty good. Or it certainly felt like it. Turning up there's obviously people who have been going for the past few years then the odd new person like myself. 3 girls as well which was impressive.
Started with a jog/stretch type thing and then some fielding stuff; a keeper rolling the ball and going it for it and throwing back, but getting more aggressive and attacking the ball. Then they did that in a criss-cross way so you do it from different angles.
After that we were paired up at each end of the nets and practising front foot drives. The guy who I was with immediately pointed out that my back foot is swerving every time and the key is playing the head and front foot forward and then everything just follows. Worked pretty well to be fair, already have aches in my back having never really played the shot properly.
Once that was done two groups went into the nets with bowling machines whilst the others were put into a more match type/hit and run situation and in particular practising those off drives whilst the fielding team were trying to put the bits from the first part of it. I didn't net and played the two games and like I said, front foot, head down, keeping the back foot balanced and low and behold hitting them where I wanted, and even running them in.
All in all, a really good session and it's coached really well. I think a few people of better ability might have got a little bored and wonder if they'll turn up next week but for me it's perfect. Went down the pub afterwards with a few of them as well, obviously they know each other but more than welcoming. Admittedly at £18 it's not cheap, but whatever.

Thanks for the review. When you were split into 2 groups were you given a choice over whether to net with the bowling machine or play in the practice match, or do you expect to rotate next week and take your turn with both?
-
Apologies for the hijack, but who would be keen on going for a few nets as a CB group? If there's already a thread for this then point me in the right direction as I'd certainly be keen!

You switch over, but if you wanted to stay and play another game you were able to do so; for me it felt better with those shots in practice in a match type situation as opposed to just netting. With the bowling machine you faced 6 balls, went out and waited your turn and took another six.
