Title: Chase 150 Finback - restoring an old favourite
Post by: WalkingWicket37 on September 23, 2015, 02:28:08 PM
Hi all

Seeing Smiley's B3 got me thinking about an abused Chase 150 Finback I had hiding away.

A bit of history with this bat. It was my first ever "proper bat" to my mind, and I bought it when I was 14. It then had 3 seasons of constant use for everything, nets, matches and even playing on damp wickets!
There was never a scuff sheet applied to this bat, but as cracks appeared fibreglass tape was applied. I religiously oiled the bat, but it eventually ended up wrapped in tape from toe to about 4 inches below the Finback sticker.

I didn't get any pictures of it mummified in fibreglass, so by the forum rules this never happened.

I attacked the tape and then gave the bat a sand down using my orbital sander (avoiding the stickers!)

Following this I glued the toe and sealed the cracks and delanination on the face.
The bat is currently wrapped in tape (a different kind this time!) waitin for the glue to dry.

Not going to sand around the stickers?

Not going to sand around the stickers?

As I said in the OP, I didn't get too close to the stickers with the orbital sander. If you get too close you've ruined them (trust me on this - in speaking from experience!)

I'll probably get as close to them as I can by hand as I progress with the refurb mate.
I've spent at most an hour on this so far and am pleased with the progress so far, but there's still a lot to be done.

Why is there a hole in the toe? Was that part of your refurb?

All done! Well the majority of it anyway!

Cracks sealed, glue dried, final hand sanding (including round the stickers @Gurujames) and a coat of oil applied.
All that's left to be done is to apply a scuff sheet once the oil had dried and to replace the grip. Not a bad days work  :)

Cam I popped in to Chase the other day and spoke to the owner. He mentioned they are thinking about taking someone on, perhaps you should pop your head in there and have a chat?

Oh what a dilemma!
I've just taken a new job and have started progressing up my current career path, but that sounds like it could be my dream job!

Oh, what to do...

Thanks for letting me know mate  :)
