not sure i understand how the double bar version offers more vision than the single bar helmet? the distance between peak and grille in both seems identical. is this not correct?

Still looks like the same gap between bar and grille!

The gap is larger, it isn't much larger, but it is enough to make a difference.
The double bar allows for this larger gap (and better vision) whilst still being able to offer the same level of safety.
Its a simple as that really.

The top bar(fig a) on both helmets are at the same width,
but as the double bar allows this to be set further back and line up with the lower bar.
It gives a larger viewing angle(fig b) when looking out.
This inly works if you wear the helmet correctly so the double bar lines up.
