Over the last couple of months I've managed to somehow (not unlike me!!) purchase more than 1 helmet, and now I'm stuck on what to do....
I've got a
Large navy masuri
Large blue Albion
Large black Albion ultimate 98
All 3 are brand new, except the titanium grill for the Albion with no cloth and in truth I like them all. But.... I'm now considering selling them all and treating myself to a Masuri VS Elite, I'm just not sure.
What would you do

Masuri's don't conform to the latest specs and you don't want to ruin what's left of your looks do you?

Don't worry, I thought the same

Albion don't? Wasn't sure as the peak is reinforced.

None of those comply, some were failing at 30mph when we were shown videos as a committee at L'boro when discussing the spec of the new safety standard.
-
Oh Redders, you helmet!

Should be ok in our league then, not sure many get above 30mph or even bounce once ;)

Sorry for the tangent here. Been thinking of a topic/time to post this in, but never got round to it.
Young lad in the net recently, wearing an old style non compliant helmet. 35 mph, grille wasn't on the narrowest setting but was certainly far from the widest too. Straight through and bruised his cheek. Quite an eye opening thing to have happen in front of you, especially when you read countless posts on the forum about club cricket bowling not being quick enough to breach the gap on an old style helmet.
35mph. Literally underarm lobs.
@fromthehip saw it, it wasn't a big incident and the kid actually carried on with his net, but what if the machine was at 45mph, or 55mph?
-
@Ayrtek so do none of the new masuri's comply?
-
If Redders didn't have the head size of an ant, then a masuri would be too small for him and he could buy a decent helmet like an Ayrtek.

Masuri Vision series complies, the labelling reflects the updated safety standard.
-
Sorry to go off topic! all the helmets that comply to the latest safety standard (BS7928:2013) are listed here by the ECB:-

Jake, the grills can be set to a certain gap but you cant guarantee that one ball is the same shape as the next so it could fit through a gap that another ball would have been kept out of.
30mph is still fast enough to cause enough pain for me!

My head is huge! I must have a big helmet...

In answer to the question, I would not make the decision until the new year when you can see the new Ayrtek option and I assume a new Albion option.
-
Keep the two albions and punt the masuri. That's what I'd do if I was in your position!
-
Redders, would you mind doing a comparison? I take it you've altered all of them so you have the best compromise between vision and safety. Could you measure the gap between grille and peak? I've done that with my Club 2 and with the peak being pretty strong the gap looks more than ok to me. Ok I don't face the quickest bowlers out there but you'd think it would survive a top edge coming up.

-
@Jaffa - sorry about the delay mate. Here are the results.
Masuri - 52mm gap
Black Albion - 50mm gap
Blue Albion - 49mm gap

Thank you @19reading87
Can anyone tell me the reason why they fail the current regulations? Is it because the peak is too weak or the gap can be adjusted so it is too big?
-
I think it's to do with the peak flexing even if the gap is smaller. Before a moratorium on spending, I bought a Shrey Air stainless steel. Having used a masuri for the last 11 years I find them similar and the steel is not much heavier.

peak-flexion upon impact even with smallest setting. Gaps will typically be 45> now to prevent penetration.

If you're patient, you can wait for the new @Ayrtek which conforms to the new standards. I tried one on at vitas on the way back from holiday during the summer and was very comfortable and light

Yes, very interested to see the new version. I wear an Ayrtek, for comfort, not because I think it offers the best protection.
I hope that the peak length is shortened or at least the material under it is strengthened so a ball is less likely to be deflected inwards by it.

im looking forward to seeing the new ayrtek also. i currently have 2 and love using them
