Dummer cricket centre
Dummer
Basingstoke
RG25 2AR
Attendees so far (* next to name of those who have paid)
Cam (WalkingWicket)*
Bruce (Fattus)*
Matt (Roco Da Pixie)*
Felix*
Chalkie*
ppccopener*
Batbuddy99 (Ben)*
Batbuddy99's Dad (Paul)*
Nick (uknsaunders)*
Pete Hosk+
Simon May+
Waiting for confirmation from:
ProCricketer1982
Anyone else who wants to attend please let me know.
I'll be booking the lane early next week, so it'd be useful to know for how long everyone fancies netting and if they'd like a bowling machine or to turn their arm over.
I'm getting overly excited by this, its kike christmas has come early for me. An off season net and I get to meet fellow forum members :D
Original post
Morning all (well, mainly Southerners!)
As we have interest - this is the actual attempt to organise a net on Saturday 14th November at Serious Cricket in Dummer.
From responses to the other thread I believe we will have:
Me
@petehosk
@FattusCattus
Then those who expressed an interest without confirming:
@RoCo Da Pixie
@felix
@ProCricketer1982
Can everyone let me know if they are able to attend either way please, and anyone else wanting to attend please let me know.
I'll leave this as an open invitation until 7th November, and will book that day once I know how many plan to attend.
Cheers
Cam x
-
I am a yes for that one.
Let me know timings etc.
-
cam just checking and will confirm in plenty of time for you
would like to attend and meet the rest of the guys and have a hit
all the best
ppcc
-
Just checking with Mrs Fattus
-
Mrs Felix say yes so count me in - 2 autumn nets, riches untold!
-
Better buy a new bat then!
-
@WalkingWicket37
Cam,
What time are you thinking of for this as may be able to come along, I could do with the practice and exercise.
Al
-
Good question Al
Was thinking 11-12 start if everyone else is keen, plenty of time for a good 3 or 4 hours in the net that way.
This good for everyone else??
-
That will be fine with me.
-
Sounds perfect!
Who is booking the lane?
-
I might be able to come with my dad, but I can confirm sunday
-
Okay then, we seem to be gathering momentum!
I'll add the list of attendes and times to the OP
I'll book the lane next week Pete, shall I go for 4 hours and assume everyone whos stated interest will turn up?
-
I'm deffo in Cam.
-
After 12 would be best for me, but if you book 4hrs I will be able to catch at least 2hrs of the session
-
I think book 4 hours in Net 1 and make sure the bowling machine is booked in case of lower numbers and tiredness after a couple of hours ;)
Looking like it will be a good net chaps :D
-
After 12 would be best for me, but if you book 4hrs I will be able to catch at least 2hrs of the session
If we start at 11 you can join us midway throug Al, the more the merrier (and i'm looking forward to actually meeting people, I'm in contact with most of you regularly enough!)
-
We can definitely go
For £15 an hour net hire use code NET2015
Make sure you book before 5th tho
-
I'm confirmed in too
See y'all all there :)
-
I'm supposed to have the boy all day Saturday :(, I'm working on my dad though to babysit
-
I'd be up for a session with the bowling machine. 4 hours will kill me but I'll roll my arm over for as long as I can! Cam are you collecting money in advance?
-
and Cam - have you agreed on a start time?
-
I thought it was 11am-3pm?
-
Is their any room for anyone else if so I would be interested in netting with you guys
-
11 o'clock start.
Will book tomorrow.
And come along Si (please bring the Scat?)
-

Will do mate have you got a post code and what's the cost mate and will bring a fair few bats
-
Cost is £110 for 4 hours in lane 1 with a bowling machine.
If everyone who's going could paypal gift £10 to cameron_pye@hotmail.co.uk that would be great.
I'll update the OP to show who has confirmed attendance and who has paid :)
-
@simonmay5 call it £10 each for the 4 hours and I'll absorb any shortfall once everyone has paid. My PayPal is in the post above
Address of the net is:

-
Who just paid me?
And I'll say it again, can you pay via PayPal gift please.
I will expect the 54p difference in cash! ;)
-
Cam,
Money sent from me. I have put a note in so you can tell who it is.
Matt
-
Thanks to those who have sent payment over.
If I could get as many people to pay before 16.00 tonight that would be great.
@FattusCattus
@felix
@Batbuddy99 (& his dad)
@simonmay5
@Chalkie ??
@ProCricketer1982 ??
Could you lovely lot please PayPal me £10 I'll get the booking made tonight :)
-
I have paid you Cam-Dog!
-
@WalkingWicket37
Done Cam, looking forward to it although sounds like you have some proper players turning up so I may be a bit out classed 😕
-
Cheers boys
Bruce, your payment is floating round in cyberspace somewhere ??? received! :)
Al, don't worry, I'm not only arranging it, I'm also there to lower the standard :D
-
Seems to have gone this time.
-
Bruce/Simon -what time are you chaps aiming to get there?
-
11ish I guess.
-
Cost is £110 for 4 hours in lane 1 without a bowling machine.
So have you not booked a bowling machine? :(
4 hours would be a struggle for a marathon runner! Plus there are going to be times when there may only be 2 or 3 people there? 1 batting, 1/2 bowling? Won't work well! The bowling machine if £5/hour so worth a couple of extra quid?
-
Anyone know if Dan (Chase) works on a Saturday am?
we could 'nerd mob' him.
-
I have been down there before and Chase are normally there. Seen Dan a couple of times. I was going to givev them a bat to refurb while I was down there.

Sorry, thats my phone autocorrecting/guessing what i was going to say (much like my girlfriend does!)
Just to confirm that was the cost WITH the machine

Phew! I had a vision of everyone getting up on the following morning still aching from 4 hours of bowling!
Perfect fella!
And Dan does work on Saturdays when they are busy, which I suspect they are now? Dan was on 2 weeks holiday last time I popped in but should be back now.
-
Just reading the Terms & Conditions
It says max 6 per lane, with 8 (at your own risk) at managers discretion.
Anyone know how closely this is monitored.
And can we use the excuse "there's 10 of us here, but only 6-8 using the lane"? :-[
-
Lane 1 is closest to the exit of the nets.
So a couple of people can sit immediately outside the net sorting through bats! There is also a bar as well! ;)
I suspect that it's unlikely that there would be 10 or more people there for all 4 hours? So we can sort as/when someone arrives? So if there are 6 or 7 in the net and someone arrives, then 1 or 2 can go for a rest and drink?
I think the main reason could be if there are too many people in a net waiting t bowl, then a few may be in danger of being hit by balls if Net 2 is being used at the same time. So if Net 2 is not being used, then they may be a little more laid back with numbers?
-
I'll Just book it and say nothing.
Its not llikely to be an issue and we will've paid a fair amount!
-
Exactly, rest periods will be required, and Pete spends most of his time stroking peoples bats anyway!!!!
-
What can I say....I enjoy stroking wood!
-
resting period essential as some of us are old and knackered.
well done for organising walking wicket and cattus
great news there's a bar afterwards :)
-
There is a bar with TV no less. Also is a shop and Chase cricket is next door, although may not be open to visitors!
-
Can someone do a review on some chase bats

I hope chase is closed as it would be far too easy walking out with a new bat ftom there!!
:)
-
All booked!
Saturday 14th November, Lane 1 (including use of bowling machine) from 11am to 3pm.
Look forward to seeing you there :)

-
Sorry cam only just seen this
I'll try to get payment to you asap
-
Any more for any more?
Still waiting on the last couple of payments and confirmation of attendance from one person.
I'd really appreciate it if everyone paid before the day. If it all goes to plan you'll only need cash to buy the organiser a drink ;)
-
This time next week boys! :D
-
Fattus is already warming up his bowling arm, some huge willow to pummel the bowling machine not to mention his pencil for post net reports!
Danger!
Haha
-
I can't wait to bat against the legend that is Fattus, it will be a spectacle to behold, akin to Sachin Tendulkar facing Glen McGrath (or for a more accurate description, Chris Martin facing any left armer...) :D
-
After bowling/netting terribly at Oval last week and nothing else to do I'm feeling half compelled to grab the train down. Hmm.

Should be a decent day for a net. Sure the body will be loving it come the next day.
Personally not looking forward to bowling in the dummer nets as from memory they are very bouncy
-
Christ!! That's a lot of bodies - some of us had better lurk about outside the nets for a while, or even in the shop!
However, I presume not everyone will be there for the whole time, and normally, not everyone who commits will turn up.
-
How do we all recognise each other? We should all wear hats I think.
Cam - what hat will you wear?
I'm getting there for the 11am start I reckon.
-
I will be getting there for about 11.
I am coming from Wokingham so not too far at all.
I do hope Chase can do a quick refurb for me.
-

If it flys out of the middle first up i'll give my real name, if the wicket keep rattling i'm Mike Brimble
-
Good point on recognising each other, we need to get the Team America secret signal going when we walk in I think!
I'll get there for the 11am start as it looks like I'm unofficially in charge (that is a worry!)
What will I be wearing, a bit more than when you asked me on the phone the other day Bruce... ;)
I'll probably go for green shorts and a white training top thing, so I wont stand out :-[

So tempted now my bat has arrived...arrrrgh

It's mighty tempting. Is it easy to get to from the station?
-
It's mighty tempting. Is it easy to get to from the station?
I don't think it is ultra close to a station.
-
I hope to be there sometime between 12.30 and 1 and will just look out for the group of knackered looking men with far too much kit admiring each other's wood ;)
-
Thinking about this logically, me & Roco Da Pixie (at least) are getting there for 11.
We are in lane 1. Spotting the CBF group should be easy! :D
-
I should be there for 11 too and plan to carry on until i drop :)
-
Ill be there from 11 - probably eating a pasty in the car park!

Anybody know if there's still miles and miles of 50 mph contraflow along the M3, haven't been on it for a while? Need to allow plenty of time to get through that...

They are indeed still making the M3 a "Smart" Motorway Malcolm, The 50mph limit is still there.

We already have 12 people attending so you might not get much of a bat haha
-
I will bring all the bats I own..........
All two of them ;)
I must be an anomaly in the CBF Community
-
Weirdo!
-
Our teams number 11 actually has 9 bats all bought new. When I asked him why he has 9 he just said 'I like bats'
Depending on how you look at that it's either perfectly normal or perfectly mad!

That is your lack of carbs showing. That and the fact that you were performing in a very heavy pair of flares, which must have taken it out of you!
-
So - let me introduce you to our new chums -
On the left in the first pic, your eyes are not deceiving you, this isn't Mr Miyagi - this is @ppccopener AKA 'Carlo the Jackal'. This pocket-sized portion of batting excellence has obviously played on some decent decks in his time, as he is what might be politely described as a back-foot player. Hanging on the back foot, he waited to pounce on anything short, or long-hoppish. In a break from tradition, he also went back to good length balls too! Like a happy little pirate, he wielded his bat like a cutlass, strongly favouring the cut and the pull - drives were a rare treat and strictly rationed. Sporting a natty pair of batting specs, he squinted down the wicket with his little face all crumpled up, concentrated fiercely and the wide variety of deliveries he was receiving. He had a certificate from his mum excusing him from bowling, so he made sweet love to the bowling machine for much of the afternoon.
Do not adjust your sets, the cheeky little homunculus on the right is not far away, @uknsaunders really is that size and shape. He is a very tidy purveyor of (what he calls) left arm spin. Always on the money, he kept banging away on a tight line and length with subtle variation. I say subtle, as the variations in delivery were so delicate many of us did not spot them, but he clarified to all of us on many occasions that the variation were there. On occasion he extracted turn and bounce from the surface, often without the use of a step-ladder. A willing and cheerful netter, he was the bowling workhouse - or rather pit pony. Sadly, like many spectators, I missed his batting. Was voted by the group as person most likely to say 'carrom'.
-
We shall gloss over the sexual tyrannosaurus showing off his package in the second pic and move on to pic 3.
On the left we have Small (but perfectly formed) Paul - better known as @Batbuddy99 's dad. A charming man, who had no prior experience of us nerds, but threw himself wholeheartedly into the day and bowled tirelessly. He earned my respect and admiration for marking out his run-up with a monogrammed hankerchief - you just can;t buy that sort of class you know! He bowled low-slung dobbers that were very accurate, and many batters said he was awkward to face - he resisted the urge to pepper us with his bouncers. It was noted that as time went on, he was frequently lured out of the nets to start looking at everyone elses wood! With the bat he was 'watchful' and did have a tendency to walk across his stumps but he did give us the charge a couple of times, and was greeted first up with a bouncer from his son!
Next we have @simonmay5 's mate 'Tommo'. He's not a member on here, but I will say he charged up to the wicket like a demented locomotive, elbows and knees pumping like pistons and his cheeks blown up like a startled puffer-fish. He sent down a few fairly rapid deliveries, but did mix in the odd full bunger and beamer, which I safely negotiated from square leg. A thoroughly nice lad though, who does think that Simon may have a bit of a bat-fetish problem.
-
And next - those aren't his pasty legs, he was actually wearing a body-stocking - it's @WalkingWicket37 himself. Now he purveys something he calls 'offspin'. He bustles in from a longish run up, and then something extraordinary happens - for those of you who remember the Paul Adams 'frog in a blender' action - Cam's can only be described as 'a turtle having a sh*t'. His shoulders hunch up, his head squats down into his neck, his face contorts, his arms whirl and out of it all comes the ball! As a deception to confuse the batsman, it is tremendous, but I suspect serious back trouble beckons. With the bat he was certainly bristling with intent, no matter what delivery was sent down, he assayed either a violent blow over cow or a slap over the top. This image is only spoilt by the fact that it took 10 minutes and a change of two different bats before he finally connected with one - legend!
Next to Cam is @Chalkie or - 'you can call me Al'. A tall, thin reed of a man he bowled sharpish seamers, angled in at the stumps. Curiously, he tried 3 different lengths of run-up, with the same result of each one. Looks like he'd be a handful on a bouncy pitch due to his height, don;t let the mild-mannered demeanor and the specs fool you, he followed up every short delivery by growling 'try using yer friggin' bat ass-wipe!' - you know what these fast and nasties are like. With the bat he was more sedate and circumspect - he certainly didn't like dibbly-dobbly little inswingers :) and did look to hit over the top when he could, which only succeeded in knocking in the top edge of his bat!
-
Those not pictured include -
@Batbuddy99 , a young, keen whippersnapper of a lad. His callow, willowy frame belied the paceman lurking inside. He bowled slingy seam-up on a very tight line, some of which cut in towards leg slightly. Like so many young men, unhardened by national service and public school naked initiation-rites, he did tire after a while, and flung a few into the side netting - but after a can of Vimto and a Curly-Wurly, he returned to the fray sharper than ever and cleaned a few people up. One for the future Mr Strauss!!!
Roco da Pixie - the off-spinning allrounder with fierce competitive spirit, cunning flight, guile and as he constantly reminded us - ONLY 2 BATS (heretic!!! burn him, burn him). He bowls lovely loopy offies on a very good line and I would imagine would be hard to get away. A cricketing purist, he uses a Salix and bats in a cravat, with an MCC tie holding up his creamy flannels. He seems to object to being mooed from outside the off stump through cow, and believes bowling machines to be an abomination and will have no truck with them. With the bat, he is a cautious builder of an innings, looking to rotate the strike - although he does like to 'get on with it' to deliveries wide of the off stump.
@petehosk - nothing more to say - the man, the myth the legend brought more bats than overs he bowled, spent a lot of time stroking other peoples wood, and at one point, rather disturbingly disappeared off to the toilets for half an hour with Simon's Screaming Cat.
@simonmay5 - Every time he bats, he's in a different net to me, so I can't describe it. Another who bought many, many bats with him, then spent most of his time fingering everyone elses. Simon doesn't bowl any more, so when he got bored, he took his bff Tommo into the indoor arena and they played with each other for a while - it was like watching two colts frisking about on the outfield!
-
Having personally faced 'tommo' I can vouch for him being rapid. Can't say that was the nicest thing to do on an inconsistent pitch to say the least
-
It's alright - I got my own back when he batted!!
All hail the benders!
-
Well done Cattus maybe we can all do it again? And Cam can achieve his goal of offloading some bats rather than coming back with yet more.Blinding coffin to keep them in thou-legendary!
-
Great read Fattus!!

Yes, I went with the intention of selling some bats, I came home with more bats than I left with and a new coffin to keep them in. That took some explaining when I got home! :D
Despite the camera issues I had, I'm hopjng at least one video saved before the recordings stopped saving. I'll know at some stage througj the week and will upload any footage I have :)

I need to go to the Hosk home and show him some of my collection and see his and maybe do some exchanges..
Looked a good day guys

Well I know that was my first net of the post/pre-season but I am feeling it today. Interstitial muscles and Obliques really getting the first net of the season soreness.

Always welcome fella - you know it would be a special day mate!
The missus would have to go out as that bat tapping drives her mad! ;)

Lacking match fitness ;). Bowled for 4 hours and felt nothing the day after. I expect match fit @FattusCattus will be similarly unaffected.

Well, if you count one ball every ten minutes or so "Bowled for four hours", then yes, you are "Match fit" ;)

Was a good day. The shoulders were a tad stiff the next day.

I might of eased off in the final hour but myself and Bruce were like non-stop bowling machines for 3 hours while others were admiring wood. As somebody who sneaked in for 90 mins and batted a fair chunk of it I think it's a pot kettle black situation :D
-
I was in good nick actually - even after the long pacey spells I subjected you all to. Back, shoulders, testicles - all fine.
I told you - I'M A BOWLING MACHINE!!!!!!!!!

I'm feeling surprisingly fresh too, considering the alarming amount of effort that goes into my run-up (compared with the frighteningly slow end result :-[)
