Title: 2016 GM Paragon
Post by: leatherseat on November 26, 2015, 08:57:10 AM
Hi,

I have never had a GM bat, but the reviews on here, particularly relating to the consistency of them, has brought me round. Also, there seem to be a good choice of excellent bats around the £100 mark (as with Kookaburra, too). After visiting a few shops over the past few weeks, (before and after the 2016 ranges were delivered) I finally went for a Paragaon 808. Inevitably, it was some distance above the original budget, but it was the one that 'spoke to me' - lovely pick up. I really enjoyed trying various bats for pickup, side by side. It is surprising how different, similar bats can feel.
It weighs 2lb10oz after thickening up the handle with some lightweight rubber sheeting. It is good to be back to my normal bat weight after 'inadvertently' getting a 2lb 13.5oz bat in February.

The last pic is next to my, still good, 1990's GN Dynadrive
I quite fancied some heartwood, not the highest grain count but the feel off the mallet and in my hands, is excellent.
I was recommended to spend around 45 minutes knocking in the edges, which I have done - their was a lot of compression happening as the corners rounded off. I have had to lift the scuff sheet edges and re-lay them. The blade also shows a lot of indentations after some mallet work. I wouldn't feel happy about going straight into a match with it, 'out of the packet'.

Nice stick mate although that red tape is sending my OCD into over drive haha :D

I can't stand it when I see the wrong colour tape being used and the use of really fat electrical tape, it has to be the thin tape in either black or white. If you don't have this type of tape then you don't put any on at all.

I hope you enjoy your bat mate, GM seem to be in a good place right now when it comes to making top quality bat.

Thanks, liscon12.
Interesting observation about the red tape - I have reservations about the neon green in the Logo and love red. I have about six different coloured electrical tapes to choose from and couldn't resist bringing some red into play. Never thought about the thickness of the tape. I may review that and cut some down...

Joys of cricket. Lots of people do believe you shouldn't dare use 19mm tape instead of 12mm tape as its apparently village.

People need to get out of there own bottoms.

Nice bat.

I don't mind what tape @leatherseat uses, but it does makes me want to rip it off and put something I like to use on haha :P

I think I have a problem haha :D

Doesn't bother me in the slightest but I'm village to my very core :D

To be 7mm over the Village boundary - agonising. :o
I can take a hint and will review the tape width.
It will be staying red, though! :)

Nice bat.

As long as it's not fibreglass tape used to hold the grip down it's not "too much of an issue"
That yellow and green striped electrical tape isn't okay though!

But earth tape with a yellow grip looks superb!  ;)

For an 808 bat, this one certainly has a lot of grains and a clean face (with no spots or blemishes). Excellent bat. GM is definitely cranking out very good stuff for the past two years ... Keep it up guys !

Lovely bat but red tape is village. Black or possibly white is allowed (with the correct colour scheme to match). Also please get the right width of tape, another village offence :-)

In the world of both cars and cycling, red is acknowledged as being the fastest colour.
I feel, as we move into a more analytical approach to batting, we'll see more and more red tape on bats to enhance the speed of the bat swing...  ;)

The tape width will be amended (although will the amount of red have a direct impact on bat speed? In which case I may need to find ways to add more red).

Such a complex topic...

This thread is like the Syria debate - totally missing the point and focussing on an irrelevant bit of red tape.

Have you used it yet? what is the bat like, how does it pick up? What do you make of the new "electric" branding!!!

The bat - well...

It feels nice with a mallet - it was the best of the shortlisted three, in the shop.
I haven't had a chance to play with it, yet. Hopefully in January it will be ready for a net. I have been knocking it in - rounding the edges and putting some work in, on the face. The wood seems quite soft - the edges have compressed quite a bit under the scuiff sheet and there are clear pit marks on the blade from the mallet work, too. I have had to lift the scuff at the edges and re-lay it, to make it sit tight against the rounded edges.

The pick up is very good (high middle helps, of course). Again, it was the lightest pick up of the many I tried in the shop. Original weight was 2lb 9.4oz. The handle feels a little thinner than some other GMs I tried - it has a thinner grip than a GM ripple. I have added some rubber underneath the original grip to thicken it up a little. Weight is now up to 2lbs 10.4oz. I might need to replace/ add a second grip.

Strange to hear its compressed as much as it has but at least you're doing it and not going straight into a game with it.

Picked up a Paragon in our new local cricket shop a week or so ago. Really impressed by how it felt. Had a bit of a hit with it (albeit against the missus's throwdowns) and it seemed to rocket. Had to be mindful not to ping it back at her, though! Looks a belter. Enjoy it and try not to get too hung up on the tape colour!
