I thought it might be fun to speculate on a possible England XI 2 years from now- here's mine -
Lyth
Hales
Lees
Root
Taylor *
Stokes
Buttler +
Rashid
Curran
Finn
Footitt
12th Man - Vince / 1 x Overton
I know it's open to various opinions, and is subjective - but that's half the fun see?
-
Which curran?
And surely Broad - who's still in his twenties I think - will still be in the England test team in two years time

You think Cook will get sacked? Can't see it happening for awhile yet.
-
Isn't Root heir apparent to Cook anyway
-
That's what I mean - subjective.
Broad - granted, I thought he was older than he was, and may sneak in ahead of Finn.
Cook, I think will be gone in 2 years time. I think he will have got past 10k runs and will retire.
-

I actually think Root will continue to score runs and should be left unencumbered by captaincy.
-
I'd have Taylor over Root as skipper, experienced at the job and leaves Root to carry on being Root.
2017? Assume Anderson will retire after the 16/17 Ashes, other than that the team is likely to be selected from much the same people as it is now! Sorry Cattus, not far enough into the future for much to change.
-
Nah, he's the only one there who seems remotely likely to stick around.
As for Cook he's really got to (No Swearing Please) it up again on the next Ashes tour to be given the boot...
-
Ansari
Hales
Root
Taylor*
Stokes
Hain
Buttler+
Rashid
Broad
Footitt
Wood
Reckon Sam Hain will have some proper decent seasons, he said "I'm fair dinkum a Pom" when asked about playing for England and you can't get more English than that!!
-
Hopefully in the future Mason Crane becomes a decent leggie to solve our spin problems
Maybe not 2017 tho probably nearer 2020

Evolution not revolution. Never changes as much as you think.
Cook, who I reckon will end.up second all time, 14k plus.
Lyth
Taylor, following Bell retiring post-ashes
Root
Ballance
Stokes
Buttler
Ali
Broad
Wood
Foottit
Gradual introduction is the way England always go...
-
Cook only needs 220 runs to get to 10k so I am confident he will make it!
I am going for...
Cook
Lees
Rooooooooot
Taylor
Roy
Stokes
Buttler
Ansari
Broad
Curran S/woakes
Anderson/Finn/Footitt/wood/ not sure...!
-
Cook
Lyth
Compton
Root
Taylor *
Stokes
Buttler (shouldn't be there but he's Mr do no wrong) +
Ali (again shouldn't be close but he's do no wrong)
Wood
Broad
Topley

Cook+ - He's got years left in him and will break few more records before he calls it a day.
Hales - I like the lad and want him to succeed. Potentially England's newer to Davey Warner.
Taylor - give him time to establish himself then step up to 3 when Bell retires.
Rooooooot - he picks himself right now, let's hope he continues to do so.
Roy - He'll be a star and playing regularly in all sides before long.
Stokes - On his day he virtually wins tests on his own. Leave Ben Stokes to flourish and do Ben Stokes things for England for years to come.
Butler - He's been groomed to keep long term keeper in all formats. Sadly this means Ron Weasley will be disposed of again at some point in the future.
Ansari - his chance will come, he'll perform better than Ali and cement his place. Another star of the future.
Broad - got a few years left as spearhead of the attack, will be in the top 10 test wicket takers when he retires.
Anderson - Mr Reliable of theEngland bowling attack. I've got a feeling he will keep going to either 500 poles or he breaks down.
Footit- he has his chance to be around the squad now, will be established in a couple of years.
In and around the squad:
Ballance - steady accumulator who will do a job when called upon.
Rashid - 2nd spinner and specialist drinks carrier
Barstow - back up gloveman and probably the "what if" man of English cricket
Vince - great talent but plays for the wrong county to be given a regular gig
Finn - still young enough to have a long England career, he seems to have been around for ages though!
Woakes - a poor man's Stokes

I don't fancy that team on anything other than a road. Tbf, same as all the teams named.

Maybe that sums up England's problem. Lots of options available but no real depth of quality players.
Can only bat consistently well on a road and only bowl sides out on a sporting wicket.
-
So a real left-field England team, of impact players -
Hales
Roy
Root
Vince
Taylor*
Billings +
Stokes
Crane
Brooks
Footit
Finn
-
On another note I'm certain by 2018 we'll have at least one Curran involved in the test side...

Would need some serious top order runs from that side, tail starts at 8!
-
Broad for Brooks?
-
Gotta love the batting line-up though!
-
Some of you should think about Sam Hain. Highly thought of at Warwickshire and they reckon he'll be in the Engkand team in the next 2-3 years
-
So many possibles - even from my beloved Middx-
James Harris
Toby Roland-Jones
Ravi Patel
Nick Gubbins
-
Maybe a little over 2 years but certainly on the radar...
If Ben Duckett continues to score the volume of runs he's currently doing he'll be up there, certainly with the Lions.
Rory Burns has more chance of opening for England than Ansari - Burns has done well considering he was a makeshift opener
Jack Brooks unfortunately won't play for England at test level, too old
Another Warwickshire boy in Josh Poysden, leggie and has a big fan in Shane Warne.
Billy Root, don't be surprised to ever see the Rooooooot brothers play for England together
Tom Fell at Worcestershire looks a great bat. Let's hope his set back with cancer doesn't hinder a fantastic career ahead
-
Not sure but there should be at least 8 South Africans ;)
-
I don't think there will be that many changes in 2 years, more a few key spots changed.
Cook
Lees/Abell
Vince
Root
Taylor
Stokes
Buttler
Ansari/Moeen
Wood/Topley
Broad
Finn
In and around the squads I think we'll be seeing Overton x2, Rashid, Roy, Burns, Crane, Hain and the like.
-
Two years time? Thing is, that's not that far into the future - the only major shockwave will be the Ashes tour down under, which tends to bring one or two players to their natural conclusions. As such, I reckon something along the lines of:
Cook (capt)
Lyth
Compton/Ballance
Root
Vince
Stokes
Buttler/Bairstow (wkt)
Ali/Rashid
Broad
Wood
Finn
Yep, no really massive changes from what we have right now - Anderson will be done, but Cook, Broad and Ali soldiering on. I've omitted Taylor because, as harsh as it may sound, I don't see his technique working against proper quicks and moving balls.
A better question would be to ask what you see the side being four years from now - a full test cycle of old away. Circa January 2020, say. How about:
Alex Lees
AN Other
Sam Hain
Joe Root (c)
James Vince
Ben Stokes
Jos Buttler (w)
Mark Wood
Matt Fisher
Mason Crane or Alex Riley
Jamie Overton or Tom Curran
-
I can see Cook playing until he literally can't play anymore, he has that old school stubborn determination and seemingly unquenchable thirst for runs and he's not even 31 yet, could potentially get another 5 years in unless he loses his mental edge. I see him going top 5 if not more of all time run scorers before he's through, I'm not saying he'll catch Sachin but I don't think it's nonsense to imagine him catching up with Dravid/Kallis/Ponting.

Hell why not always be a Kent lad so give a couple a go
