Hi all
I was lucky enough to come into possession of this lovely Kookaburra from Simon.
Got my bubble today and decided to sand back a bit of the bleached willow back do I sand it back even more or leave

The bat is 2.9 and for 11 pounds what not to like other than the really bleached willow I am tempted to sand right back to show the butterfly stain off then give it a coat of oil very pleased with the way the bat taps up and I will be loosing the power sticker
Now I weighed it a few days after I got it and was surprised it weighed a bit more than 2lb9!
It had gone up to just over 2lb10 in less than a week since Simon weighed it.
Since then I have given the face a light sand, taken the Power sticker off and oiled the bat thoroughly.
I started knocking her in and the toe guard came off. I cleaned up the toe and applied a bit of oil, then out of curiosity weighed it again. With the toe guard gone the dead weight had risen by another ounce again!

This got me wondering, with it putting on weight at the rate of a Laver & Wood, how exactly do SportsDirect store their bats?
On another note, having applied 3 coats of oil to be back of the bat (and sanding the worse of the bleach off the face & edges) it looks a lot more like willow than it did, it's a lovely stick for the peanuts that Sports Direct were selling them for.

I would have thought the oil added would increase the weight a bit, but 3 ounces would indicate there is another reason as well

A generous coat of oil weighs about 0.2 of an ounce (from a Julian Millichamp video)
I didn't apply as much as that, but for arguments sake lets just use 0.6oz as the figure.
There's still about 2.5oz of weight gain, which implies to me that the bat was rather dry and has taken on moisture.
-
Yeh quite probably.
Maybe it's because of thee plastic packaging that covers the bat. My theory is that the plastic is wrapped over the bat in India, where it is a drier climate, so when this is taken off the weight gains because the plastic stopped any moisture getting into the bat
That may not make sense and may be completely wrong but that's my theory

That's really put weight on that's for sure they must be stored in a heated warehouse or something as can't believe it's put so much on even when the toe guard came off

Silly question you haven't added a grip have you ???

Not yet mate.
Debating if I should add half a grip or half a layer of binding to her.
I have added a strip of zinc oxide tape over the bottom of the binding (which was left loose) but I don't think that accounts for 3 ounces haha
-
Dont you normally double bind your bats cam?
-
I normally double bind all my bats, but I'm tempted to add half a grip to this one and turn the factory grip upside down (the top half of the grip feels thicker than the bottom, which just isn't right)
-
how would you cope with the branding on the grip being upside down though?

I would hope nobody noticed, but feel dirty for having such a secret.
If anyone noticed it I would sit on the corner of the dressing room slowly rocking backwards & forwards while crying...
New grip required :-[

However they store them, I wish they wouldn't stick their big, awful, multiple paper price stickers on the actual face of the bat. Even removal in a very careful and slow manner, you do get a bit of fibre lift. A fine sanding puts this right, but I just find it annoying - especially seeing as the bats I rec'd hadn't actually been in store on the shelves... Very annoying, if I'm paying as much as £12.99 and £11.99 for a bat, I want a gold-plated service thank you very much!

Well my scales must have been having a funny 5 minutes.
Face sanded so it's back to its naturally beautiful state, extra half a grip added and it weighs 2lb11 dead.
