Just following on from the ebay thread, this little gem is certainly stretching G1:-

Anybody else got any slightly dubious claims to top grade willow?
-
The trick is not to say it is G1, but performance grade. Then you can charge £360.

You missed half the bat off the picture @Jaffa

But I can't complain about the bottom bit ;)

I thought affinity bats were picked only on performance by the maker, he didn't care about looks

Some big stickers (e.g SS) and you wouldn't know about the pinknots (and all you'd need is a sharpie to make it a G1+++ pro bat)
-
I'd be happy with that affinity as the heartwood is on the side I like(mine is on the other) and the playing area is defiantly clean.
But the pin knots do stand out.
I've never noticed if the 360 are advertised as g1 or not, but the lower end ones(like the limited run toro etc) were advertised as g2.
-
Personally wouldn't pay top money for that Affinity even if it does ping with those pin knots
-
I've got a spectre that looks worse than that, it's a pure gun though!
I've got a custom omega that's no great looker, not a performer either http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=32855.0 (http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=32855.0)

I remember that Spectre, it sure was something pretty special in both the performance and pick up. It was a shame I parted with it, but it was a touch heavy for my liking. Definitely not a value for money buy, (I think it cost £325 back then) but definitely one of the better bats I've owned in the past. :) Looks wise, if you could get passed the pin knots, you had some lovely grains and a ridiculous playing area!

That's my point. I doubt if anyone would pay £360 for that if Marcus said it was grade one. He makes the willow and marketing work. He has built up a fantastic reputation in doing so. Not an easy thing to do. Great bloke, he deserves it.
On the other end of the scale is the Bates&Bates. Their marketing has a lot to be desired. They look like part mades. If these bates bats were to perform as good as a performance grade no-one would bother to try one even though they're over a hundred quid less.

Let us not forget the mighty Solitaire!!

Jaffa sold this to me along with the floor boards lol. Not a bad bat but 360gbp for it is a bit steep although we do know its made in england unlike another not to be named brand.

Remember people... It has Pro on the label... That's makes it worth £180 more

My H4L is a tad on the ugly side for a G1 but it is an absolute weapon so I'm not bothered :D

I can't really classify this as worst looking Kookaburra Menace players bat but it certainly doesn't qualify for players tag. May be a Menace 900 or 700 might be more appropriate label. Ping test with the mallet was average. Team mate is knocking it in, lets see how it performs.

Of course this is meant as tongue in cheek but if Affinity couldn't deliver at their price point they wouldn't have such a loyal following.

U15 son has 2 Affinity Carbines from Marcus. He offered a selection at 2.7 with light pick up and they go like cannons. Bats have scored over 3500 runs and son nets 3 hours a week through winter. They've been back for 2 end of season refurbs and about to start 3rd pre-season. All his mates have bat envy and the softs are high quality and last well. As the paying parent I can't compliment Marcus enough. Reckon it's a false economy to scrimp on decent kit.

Thanks for the testimonial and I did wonder if the topic might head this way. Just to be clear, I'm was only talking about a bat from a looks perspective and how that fits with people's perception of G1. I've seen plenty of "ugly" bats perform and this isn't a thread questioning performance or value for money from that performance.
-
My comment was only tongue in cheek and not aimed at any specific bat maker just bats in general that are labelled as "pro"
-
So, controversially back on topic, did anyone see Afridi's bat yesterday? 4 grains i think...will see if i can dig out a picture.

That is no where near a grade 1 looks wise, especially if you look at the definition of grade 1. I think we have talked before about H4L and their grading.
I agree though, their bats perform very well, so if you're happy...

Depends what a brand class as "a grade one". Some do it on performance, some on just looks and others on both.
And am I the only one that thinks the affinity looks pretty decent?

I like the Affinity.
H4L state "The Grade 1 English Willow will have 7+ grains and maybe a small blemish or mark on the playing face."
This does not meet their own standards.

amazing how that "grade 1" has already reached £72 on ebay

The seller also has a reserve which has not been met. BIN is 225

Let's stay on topic ladies. More pics of ugly looking bats labeled G1/LE/Players please, less talk about performance, what makes a G1, pricing etc.
And can someone find a pic of that 4 grain Afridi bat? I'm curious now :o

Very nice grains but with a 50/50 split, if you middle it, it's never going to go straight. That's my logic anyway.
