How the hell do you find the end of the twine!!!! This is driving me nuts
-
What do you mean mate?
-
I have a ball of this binding stuff and its all tangled
-
Get an expert in - cats can unravel twine as well as anything! :)
-
If is a ball then there are 2 bits one that comes out of the middle and also one on the outside that would have been tucked in
Also put the ball of twine in a box that'll stop it bouncing around and getting into a mess but I guess it is a bit late now! :o
-
Ha yeah bit late for the box!
-
Can this stuff be bought from like a wool shop or something LOL? I just cant untangle this one.
Where do people normally get binding from? Chris Easby sent me this...
-
I brought mine off ebay when I went through the bat making phase of mine. I did buy 3 rolls of it. If I can find some, I will send some to you for Free because I no longer make bats. I am well sell my drawknife as well, but thats a different topic.
I think ebay would be a good place to start or maybe a local crafts shop?
-
No cat needed... just a very patient Mother!
Have now bound half the handle on my part made and my god did it hurt my hands!
-
Have you shaped the cleft or just twining it before making?
-
Just decided to add the binding now, have shaped the handle slightly but left the binding half way down so i can shape the rest when i have relevant tools. (which were my christmas present but havent arrived)
-
Good work mate sounds like your getting there, when i was in india i think they use PVA glue or something to get the binding to stick in place which maybe a plan (but what do i know) so stops it moving about when in use. Hope your day of sandpaper and dust way fun mate! Had enough of it when planeing and hanging doors on satuday let alone on bats/helmets this week.
Quite fancy a pop and forging my own bat :-) hit4six give me a shout if ur shifting ur draw knife!
-
from the handles ive seen being binded at redback a coating of PVA goes both under and over the binding. fancy untwirling it now leo!
-
yeh same as i saw in india holds it all in place so that it doesnt shift about once being use as last thing you want is a shifting binding!
-
Yep mine has a layer of PVA glue both underneath and over the binding
-
Leo pm me about this if you want

Have shaped the shoulders slightly using a rasp and some sandpaper, really pleased with how they have turned out.

just a thought, do you know when people have 1 and a half or 2 and a half grips on their bat? If you make your own as Leo is doing couldn't you thicken the bottom half of your handle to give the same effect of adding half a grip?
-
Yeah bats can be double bound or you can leave a lot of the wood on the handle to make it thicker
-
yep you can and many people do, an advantage of custom made! i have also seen the handle deliberately made thicker at the bottom on a couple GN predators. heres another for you - have seen a pros bat which only had the bottom half of the handle binded, thereofr thicker at the bottom but no extra weight.
