Seeing @wayward_hayward update The winter refurb thread reminded me that I have been meaning to post this.
Normally I'd do my own refurbs, but I decided to give myself and my bat a little treat.
I bought this Oblivion E41 LE from Mr Wayward a few months back. He'd done an excellent job on the repair, but I couldnt help but think the bat looked a bit sorry for itself with a few spike marks in the back, stickers missing and the repair visable when looking down the back. I used the bat, and even though this is all cosmetic, and the bat is a pinger, it was always in the back of my head and I couldn't help wishing the bat looked a bit less used. :-[
A couple of emails between myself and Gray Nicolls made up my mind. Now I just have to wait until the new year to get the bat back.
Heres a few pictures of the bat just before I sent it on it's trip to Roberstbridge.

Can't sleep so decided to check the tracking info. Hopefully it arrives before the end of the week (and more importantly I hope it arrives before the GN Xmas shut down!)

Any late night improvement in bat speed then Cam? ;)
-
Ah yes, I remember this one! It did require quite a bit of work but I was pretty happy with the outcome. I always hate the dilemma of either keeping the stickers and the bat looking half finished or losing the stickers and giving it a full refurb. It normally depends on how easy it is to get hold of a replacement sticker of stickers, which in this case is pretty tricky for a GN.
It will be interesting to see how this comes back from GN and what they make of it!

The video basically said net with a heavier bat than you normally use, so dug out my 3lb1 monster ready for a hit :D

Well this was waiting for me when I got home from work today

The bat looks much better than it did when I sent it off, but there were a couple of minor dissapointments.
I asked for 1.5 grips (with a white chevron on the top), a scuff sheet and a toe guard.
What I got back was 1 multi texture grip, a scuff sheet and a tuff toe. I also asked for the edge stamps to be either left or re-marked, which GN confirmed was possible. These were however left half removed.
The supernova stickers are very nice, but the were lifting near the handle of the bat on the front, and the sticker did not stick to the tuff toe particularly well. I may take a scalpal to the front one so it sits flush to the blade.
Had the tuff toe not been applied I would have been happy with the service, but this has ruined the look and as I did not request it I feel I've been given a service I did not want.
I am tempted to removed the scuff sheet and tuff toe, then give it a sand down low before re-applying the supernova sticker to the back and a put on a new scuff sheet.
Overall I'm happy with the majority of the work, but the edge stamp instructions being ignored after I specifically enquired about these, and an ugly tuff toe I did not want being applied has taken the shine off an otherwise brillian service.

A toe wrap is pretty standard from GN for such severe damage in that area.
-
I spent (No Swearing Please) hours colouring in the Gray Nicolls stamps, all that hard work ruined!
-
I have to admit. The tough toe has put me off considering gray nics for a refurb on any bats.
Understandable if extreme damage and issued with the customer. But to ruin a bat with such an I got addition is a huge disappointment.
Standard or not it should always be discussed with the customer.
As for the edge stamps, I'd hope this is just an oversight due to the organisation and delivery of the bat being before Xmas, and the refurb after. I.e it was just forgot.
As ignoring a customers specific request is a massive no no to keep repeat customers and feedback high.
-
I'd be disappointed if they ignored the severe toe damage and sent it back refurbed with a massive split

It had already been solidly repaired mate, i explained this and that i wanted just a clean up and new stickers.
Anyway, watch this space for progress! ;)

That was successfully repaired by @wayward_hayward super duper cricket bat repairs, Gray Nics were jealous so they covered it over.
-
The tuff toe "fell off" to reveal a lamitoe underneath!
Proper scuff applied and some tape to hide the worse of the repair (from a distance, at least!)
Much better! :D

I'm glad you got it off ok, that tuff toe was as ugly as sin!
I'm going to get my oblivion refurbed, just need to sort it out with Jake

How far up the blade does the lamitoe go cam?

The tuff toe went all that tough really, it was like a layer of zinc oxide tape painted with some kind of glue/resin.
I sound the end, unwound it and it came off easy as you like.
I may be being stupid here, but to my mind it didn't offer a huge amount of added protection (if any) over a scuff sheet, and would hide anything going in the toe area anyway.
And how far up the blade does the lamitoe go, I make it about 12mm from the 'corner' of the toe

So just booked my bat in for the whole shebang! I think it needs a new handle so im prepared for it.
I asked for the new Select stickers, 2 zone grips (white and silver) and if they could move the edge stamps to the same place the currect GNs have them. There's also a small compression crack on the toe which should get glued and clamped.
Along with all of this a scuff, fibreglass taped edges and a protectoe! (if it comes back with a tufftoe they can do one)!

Looks great now mate. You'd think following a customers requests for service would be easy wouldn't you. It's just plain laziness. Doesn't matter whether they think a customers request are a good idea or not, just do what they are paying you to do.
-
yeah, better than before! :)
-
Ruddy love the look of those Supernovas, both shape wise and sticker wise. Bat looks much better than before!!
-
I'm the opposite I can't stand the supernova stickers... Looks like someone took a bad trip. That's just a personal preference though.
So apart from the neglected requests are you happy with the job done?
-
So apart from the neglected requests are you happy with the job done?
Other than the stamps not being moved or re-marked, once I had removed the horrible tuff toe I was very happy with what was done. The bat is in much better shape than when I sent it in and looks much better with the stickers not starting to come away from the bat due to use.
-
Plus you've got the new Supernova stickers, how are they in person and other forum folk seem to think they are much better in person?
-
I wasn't sure I liked the Supernova range in general when I first saw it, but the colours grew on me to the extent I wanted the stickers on my bat! And I will echo the comments that it does look better in person than in pictures.
The blue and black may not be to everyone's taste, but whats the pictures do not show is the attention to detail of these stickers. There is some lovely enbossing and texturing going on with all the stickers (not just the big fron and back one liked some brands do) and they add another dinension to the finishing of the bat.
-
Right then, another update on this!
Multi texture supernova grip removed and replaced with 1 and a hqlf chevrons.
Following my dissapointment about the edge stamps I got my biro out and re-marked them myself! I then covered them with a bit of helicopter scuff sheet to avoid any smudges.
I have also replaced the strips of tape with a bit of fibreglass scuff sheet, just to hide the repair.
All that remains now is for me to test the bat in the nets (which will be either tomorrow night or on Sunday).

Right so i got my bat back today.
It was in a state and not been looked after for a while. I knew it needed a new handle, I also asked for;
Scuff
Toe guard
fibre glass edge tape
Zone grip white and silver
Select stickers those similar to the ac630 ones
And edge stamps!
Before it went

I got an email prior saying they could not restamp the edges due to the machine being already set up for the new stamp position, the edge not being perfectly square which can ruin the stamping process and various other reasons, which i was ok with!
They had replaced the handle and wrapped with spliced very sneakily under the stickers so you cant even notice it!
However put 5 star oblivion (SELECT edition) stickers on instead of the srickers i had asked for... Very minor detail but still... They also shaved 1.1oz off too!
-
You say they shaved 1.1 ounces of but it's possible that some of that would have come from the new handle as just like willow cane can vary in density quite a lot just like willow
-
Yeah its possible, key point is it's lighter
-
Judging by Twitter, this thread maybe updated this evening...
-
Oh really?

RIP bat

Just realised I never put any pictures on here.

I don't think a bit of fabric tape painted with glue would've saved it... Maybe the peices would've rattled round inside the tuff toe rather than falling clean off ;)
