Title: Umpire to wear helmet in BBL
Post by: Number4 on December 30, 2015, 07:50:53 AM
This comes after the Dan Christian mammoth 6... 117mtrs... And also an Aussie umpire being hit in the head during the Ranji Trophy.

"Gerard Abood reacts to safety concerns and will wear a batting helmet tonight at Etihad

Gerard Abood will tonight become the first Australian umpire to wear a helmet while officiating a KFC Big Bash League when the Melbourne Renegades meet the Perth Scorchers at Etihad Stadium. Abood will wear a batting helmet – in black – donning the same Masuri Vision Series model worn by the majority of Australian players."

Any plans for an Umpiretek Tom?

We were approached by Chris Kelly who was head of ECB umpires back in 2012 about it as it was something they were looking at. At the time they didn't take it any further but the fact we can produce custom white lids or any colour really was of interest to them along with the safety aspect.

The umpires would prob need a more robust grille design like the close fielders grille as the ball is going to come straight back at them without bouncing as the biggest risk which would prob be quicker than what it comes out the bowlers hand at.

The article also goes on to say:

"Cricket Australia is currently working with the England and Wales Cricket Board and the International Cricket Council to design umpire-specific protective wear, but Abood said until that was ready he would continue to use helmets designed for batsmen."

The baseball influence will prob come into it as it's an element that played a part in the safety standard revision. By looking at their test procedures for their umpires and batters helmets due to ball speeds being more relevant off the bat/from the pitcher.

Imagine a grill for umps, that also had some visual aids for umpiring, like an inbuilt redzone perhaps? Or maybe even something google glass esque to augment their view. I imagine a baseball umpiring type set up certainly makes sense

They mentioned they didn't like the baseball grill pushing on their face

They couldn't test the concept in league cricket, with say perscription glasses and hearing aids!

Sounds like George and Tom will be busy designing Umpire protection... But what would it be called?

"Don't get the Ump" maybe?

Just have virtual  umpires the ball will go right through them. Cameras do a better job anyway

An umpires helmet would work if they incorporated the traditional sun hat design with the grille, almost like an extension of the hat. Abood's one could just of had the peak going round the circumference of the helmet and in all black for the BBL or all white for conventional test, just a thought...

Put a google glass fixture inside the umpires helmet - this way they can use snicko, slow-mo videos etc before giving a decision ...

Would a @StrettonFox Sports and Ayrtek developed bumpcap not be sufficient for an umpire?

Could cover the head temple area and rear.

Not sure they'd need a grill as an umpire should be ducking and moving from the ball. Not trying to play it,
So top edges and face on hits shouldn't necessarily happen.

the MLB are looking into head protection for pitchers currently which was something we were contacted about about 6 months back to lend some viewpoints into it.

The ECB were looking into this back in later 2011 when they contacted us but nothing seems to have come of it but perhaps they are re-thinking it again now.
