Title: Hand cramp when batting
Post by: toby176 on January 04, 2016, 11:27:18 AM
Hey lads, hope the New Year is treating you well!

Just got back from a net sesh, and for the last few I've been experiencing cramps in my top hand while batting. I've taken a bit of a break from cricket recently, but have experienced it a few times before. Any clues as to how to fix it/what might be causing it?

Could it be the way I'm gripping the bat?

Very interested to hear if anyone else has experienced something similar.

I've had that sort of issue before, mainly with my top wrist being in loads of pain. Think it's because my wrists aren't strong enough. Could be down to you gripping it slightly too hard, may be worth seeing if gripping harder with your bottom hand lightens the load.

I used to suffer during batting and playing golf.
Beside the obvious wrist excerxise😉, I found that one of those Powerball excerciser worked wonders

Probably holding the handle to tight for longer than you need to which can easily happen when netting and the bowlers are queueing up

Sivlar - Do you still get this kind of pain? If not, got any idea how you fixed it?

Spoony - Just gave them a google and watched a few videos; how much tie did you spend using it? Kinda looks like a lot of fun too, so thats great. It just builds up strength in your wrists/fingers/hands?

If you've got that kind of 'death grip' with your top hand when batting, I'd take a deep breath before pleasuring yourself.

I do a lot of kayaking and this is a common problem. There's a few things to check. Is your bat too heavy? Do you need to do more forearm strength exercises? If your general fitness is low then you'll often get hand cramps until you spend more time batting. Is your handle too thick? When paddling a thicker shaft can force you to grip too tightly. If you use extra rubbers try taking one off and relaxing your hands (especially the bottom outside fingers. Hope this helps

Prob only 5-10 mins at a time. It's actually pretty knackering on your forearms and wrists.

All covered, I'm a righty on the field and a righty in the bedroom.

Thanks for the tips, pretty handy (ha). I'll give some forearm and wrist exercise a go as suggested above, but was using my usual bat weight. It very well may just be that I'm not used to it, as I've taken a bit of a break from cricket of late.

It is particularly off putting and makes it difficult to fully focus on the bowler, or so I tell myself.

I started off with some sausage gloves and I was constantly getting cramps.

Went the other way and tried some Aero P1 gloves and the problem was gone.

Now settled for some decent split finger gloves and they're ok also.
