Title: EBay?
Post by: Chmaiden on January 05, 2016, 11:47:26 AM
Am I just throwing my money down the toilet by buying off eBay?  Peoples good/ bad experiences? Just worried I will get a pants bat with test match stickers!

I've had a beautiful salix and h4l from eBay, both secondhand. If you keep an eye out you can get some bargains. However, I wouldn't buy any new bats on there unless you know the seller. Also, I would avoid certain brands as they are regularly copied. If you are unsure put a link on here, there are enough cricket geeks who will tell you whether it is real or fake.

eBay is very hit and miss when it comes to buying bats. You can get a real bargin but you can also pay over the odds for a very poor bat. To be fair to eBay you can buy a poor performing bat from a well known company or custom bat maker. It is always best where possible to go to an actual retailer and buy your bat from them but you may miss out of a eBay bargin.

I would suggest no matter how nice a bat actually looks, it's only when you use it do you really know if you've got yourself a firecracker or firewood. This winter I've purchased a couple of used GN bats off EBay which I have been using for indoor cricket against a soft ball and both felt fine. It was only when I had a bowling machine session against a harder ball did I realise how dreadful the 5 star Oblivion was (and probably the reason the person stuck it on EBay). In contrast the really tatty looking GN Powershot goes like an absolute rocket and probably the best £30 I've spent on EBay.

yeah I would echo all comments above, don't pin your hopes on getting the perfect bat on ebay for half the price, a lot of people put damaged bats on their just trying their luck.

if your really interested in something def ask questions regarding any damage, the genuine sellers will answer honestly.

There's a bit more protection for buyers these days thou so if it does go pear shaped the buyer has a money back system in their favour.

But to be honest if your spending proper money on a new bat go to a shop or contact one of the small uk manufacturers.....if it's budget second hand you look for(like myself) have a good look on ebay there can be some good deals.

Most of the best bats I've owned have been second hand from eBay for under 120 quid. Does use a lot of time sifting through all the junk, but that's half the fun.

Lorimers keep selling GN omega TEST bats on ebay atm. Seem to have had a whole batch of them, none of which look amazing and top of the line, which the TEST model is supposed to be.

Same as any auction, bit of a gamble. Had a couple of winners from there!

Another suggestion could be to deliberately misspell the brand name. You find that some people listing stuff on EBay don't play the game and aren't interested, might just be a loft clearance on someones behalf so they rush the listing and misspell stuff. therefore some listings don't come up if you search for the correct spelling.

Grey Nicolls and Gray Nicholls being a few that Spring to mind.

Don't spend more on eBay than you can afford to lose. That said doing your research can mitigate the risk. I bought a Spyder Legend for £27 and was able to email Gary of Spyder bats who confirmed it was a genuine bat but it could still have been duff. Fortunately it wasn't.

Fatfingers.co.uk is awesome for that

It's luck really I picked up a couple of GN corkers one  brand new  and one that look like it had been left in a shed try and stick to a brand you know so you have a chance of spotting something not quite right  also know someone who brought a fake CA.

lots of fake CA, MB, HS, Ihsan etc on Ebay. sometime you will even find fake GN & GM but it will be obvious that its fake when you will look at their decals etc.

Having good/bad bat is purely luck on ebay, anything other than the bats like softs/accessories are usually fine if you are getting a deal.

There are some very good deals to be had on ebay. If the seller isn't too far always worthwhile asking to have a look at the item, some good deals can also be had this way.

eBay, I love it!
I have bought a few bits on there and only once had an issue (which was a huge gamble and effectively a blind bid from me, you can't win them all!)

If you know what you're looking for and have the time to trawl through the tat that's listed you can blag yourself a bargain.

eBay is fine for softs but for bats i would prefer to stay away. For most brands there is some problem or the other ...

1. GM => Any cheap deal you see for a new bat is probably a GM - Made in India under license. GM - Made in England is my preferred option.
2. Gray Nicolls => Cheaper option of GN bats are available from Indian sellers and they sell the range which is produced for Indian market. This range doesn't match with the current GN UK or Australia range. Also the bat profile and shapes are quite different.
3. CA/HS/MB/Ihsan => There are so many fakes for these bats and sometime its difficult for someone to even detect if something is a fake. Watch out for sellers from Pakistan and Dubai/UAE selling CA cricket bats. Avoid them as much as possible ...
4. Kookaburra => Watch for Kook bats sold by Indian sellers. 90% chance it would be a kashmir willow with fake Kookaburra stickers.

If you see a H4L, B3, Blank bat etc on eBay, i would say they are safer options to buy. These bats don't come up that often on eBay and even when it comes up i find them to be mostly genuine.

Almost afraid to post this one up, seller was selling as he was injured, he bought it new from talent cricket, knocked in edge tape and Scuff sheet, but unused.Looks genuine and the seller was on play-cricket but you guys will know better than me. Salix Pod Grade One. It's my first bat, although I'm getting on a bit I only started playing last season where I was using a borrowed bat to start with.Wish I'd have found this forum earlier.

It's yet to be used in anger, but just knocking a ball up in the back it feels like a great ping, gets its debut when the nets start in Feb
