Title: GN Legend Making video from GCCC
Post by: langer17 on January 13, 2016, 07:31:32 AM
Older video but came across this video again and is funny how I now know who the person getting the bat is, a fellow forumite @Wickets-then-runs haha

How did the bat end up going?

Haha, this video shows up from time to time, to my embarrassment! That was made at the Albion store in around 2 hours I believe.Stuart did a tour of the various stores making bats and I was lucky enough to get that one done for me. Lovely bat but an absolute plank unfortunately. He made a second one for me the next year when he did the same tour in the profile that Kawaja was using (duck bill toe) which was an absolute gun! Stuart is an absolute gentleman and a genuinely nice guy!
It was by getting these made that when I asked the guys at GCCC about getting a Warner profile done, Stuart agreed to make me one branded up as a Legend.
Overall, a fantastic experience and a great way to spend a day! You guys in the UK are so lucky to have local bat makers that you can visit and get bats made: we just don't have many options here for that...

correct me if I'm wrong but those guys are getting bats from India, and only do the finish shape and stickers, sadly the last of the real bat makers in Aus are long gone, the most recent Julian (Screaming Cats), I echo the comments the boys in the UK have no idea how lucky they are.

Oh I just forgot about the boys in the West Bradbury who do still make bats locally and do a fine job

I had a bat made by Ian Callen in the Willow Blue (Aus grown Willow) and was pretty disappointed in it: Rock hard and didn't tap up well at all. Maybe the willow will improve with time or maybe I just got a dud but it didn't compare to English willow.
I had no idea we had so many bat makers here: good to see!

Is fisher still making bats? Used to see a few of them in our comp. Since I followed willowblue on Twitter and saw them doing some bat maker courses I've across a few guys shaping bats.

Give it some more time ... Sure someone will come up with some alternate source to english willow. Couple of my friends have got a bat called DSC - canadian willow. Pings crazy ... no idea about match performance yet.

If you look a bit deeper into it, unfortunately you find that most calling themselves "bat makers" is stretching it a little, I would say most do a few Bat repairs and dabble in Bat making, very doubtful any make a living out off it.
I make meals most days but you would not want to pay me for it.
None of those bats come anywhere close to a B3 or Red Inker

Strange name for a brand  :-[

It also stands for the names of the guys who started the business, Tim Derham and Dan Nichols, Bats.

As mentioned it stands for Derham Nichols Bats but as any cricketer will know it can stand for Did not bat or did not bowl. We thought that was a nice link to the game even with the obvious 'Did not bat' link. Along similar lines to TNF - Tails Never Fails
