Title: Where Are they Now? Are some Brands still going?
Post by: FattusCattus on January 20, 2016, 07:29:08 PM
With my nerd head on, I remember a few brands from my past that don't seem to be as prevelant as they used to be and I wondered if people knew what happened to them, or what they are doing now.

I'll start with a few:

Pony - Used to make cricket shoes, you never hear of them now

Funky - did he wrap up the brand when he changed bats?

Redback - I'm sure he's going strong, but lovely kit and you don't seem to hear of him

Tusker - brief retro-revival, then disappeared

Open Championship - ?

Zenith - Seem to think they were from SA, but not sure. Fluro stickers on the bats I think?

Sommers - ?

Anyone know any inside gossip, or have any other musings?

I have a funky in the shop for knocking in, strikes me as freshly made (sticker/grip don't look aged)

It's Indian made by the look of it, possibly SS

Anything about Redback? They were the must buy bat on here a few years ago.

Reg Taylor (head bat maker at Spartan) was the head bat maker at Sommers up until probably 2years ago. I'm not sure of their current status.

Redback are still going strong. I've been in contact with Gary recently and I've got a bat coming from him at the end of the month. Top quality brand, Gary makes some of the best bats in the business in my opinion.

Sean Ervine's nickname is Slug, and I know he had some connection to Funky, that being why there was a range of bats called The Slug
Ervine changed to Spartan last year though so I'm not sure what happened to Funky after that

Funky are still going strong. It's Cricket Hockey's own brand. Do a full range of bats and softs and sell a lot of junior kit around Wilts/Dorset/Hants. Funky also does hockey lit. https://www.cricket-hockey.com/. (https://www.cricket-hockey.com/.) Sean Ervine's deal expired at the end of 2014 and wasn't renewed

Player at Kidmore End makes them. My old man knows him as well as the guy at Gentleman and Players at High Wycombe (yes he knows everybody in Bucks/Oxon/Berks involved with cricket and rugby).

Think  the fellow who makes the bats name is Tom Sheldon

Kicking Horse?

Currently fighting a nasty legal battle with those shallow swallowers of pigswill - HS Cricket - in Pakistan. It's touch and go, but I think they'll win it - if so, expect new releases before the season, and I expect they will release the 'Schlong' again.

Don't think zenith made it far into the 90s, weren't they owned by newbery or something?

There was the original Newbery company in the 80s after John Newbery left GN. After that company went bust, some of his former employees founded Zenith, with John Newbery making some of the bats. After John Newbery's death, Andrew Kember of Salix made some bats for Zenith. Zenith didn't last long, but shortly afterwards, the exisiting Newbery bat company was formed. I think Chris Cowdrey used Zenith bats when he briefly captained England

And Phil Tufnell in an Ashes in the early 90s, I think.

I wasn't too far out then, only remember the brand because I had a zenith bat cover, bought from VKS when I was an U11 at Wycombe House. How time flies.

Zenith if I'm not mistaken was 3D cricket own brand with the late Tom Gravenny as brand ambassador

Also correct about cricket hockey and funky is Jamie Harvey he is a bloody nice bloke played with him a couple of times think that was his full name

Great topic

Re Funky - yep it's Jamie Harvey along with Mike and Christian Pain. Top people. They also run the shop at the Aegeas Bowl. Very good service and all involved with local cricket.

I thought so - here is a great video showing that most English of things, vainglorious failure... And Tuffers, the plastic cockney, using a Zenith bat.

I thought Zenith was a Newbury sub brand as the Z on the sticker was at a weird angle so that when you held it at 90° it looked like a N. On the Salix website it says AK used to make them.

Think the mighty Devon M also wielded a Zenith. Reckon they were front runner to the Adidas Pellera colour scheme!

They were popular on here for ages for good reason! They were excellent responding bats and only ever came across one Redback which wasn't great!  Tried quite a number and they were pingers! Still have one in my collection! Nice to know that Gary is still going!

Open Championship - one DG Gower promoted them I think.

Holt & Haskell - Mainly softs I thought

Easton - who made their bats, I had a couple of crackers from them

Also - branding changes -  I loved the old Aero stickers for bats, I wish you could still get them. I think Goughy once rocked Asics stickers on his bats.

I used to like the M&H stickers that were all wavy across the back of the bats, Puma retro stickers,

Easton distribution and manufacturing rights were bought out by aero. So anything that was Easton became aero , they all probably have been bats as they had/have there own soft style.

Holt & Haskell is the name of a sports shop fairly local to me. They used to do their own range but you don't see many about any more. I'll have a look next time I'm over that way.

Senior Counties? Seemed to be real popular in the men's teams when I was a lad. Think they were maybe made in Bridlington?
think they only got popular round the Yorkshire area though around mid 80's .

Yeah Clayton used to pedal the Centurion gear at our club whilst he was pro. I think there's still a couple of pairs of gloves / pads in the garage.

Did I see they've made a bit of a come back this year on eBay?

run by John Courtney out of keynsham cricket club, half way between bath and bristol, did a lot of sponsorship in the west country when i was young, as did centurion (half the avon/somerset guys i played against had centurion) - got quite a few guys at glos ccc to use his stuff i think - even remember chris broad using it (not sure if that is good or bad)!!!!!!
