Evening all
I type this post grateful I bought an item that many considered a waste of time.
While netting tonight I ducked under a bouncer. The ball then bounced off the back net and hit me in the head. I knew it had hit me somewhere on the head, but didn't realise exactly where until I noticed my stem guard has come unclipped on one side. I reattached this and carried on batting, but after the incident I realised it could have been a lot worse.
This was a bit of a freak occurrence, and on another day the ball would have missed me or not bounced back the way it did. However it hit me and I am now thankful I invested in a stem guard as it has saved me at least a headache.
That is now twice I have been pinned this winter, once at Dummer where @simonmay5 was feeding the machine and the delivery hit a stray ball in the lane, causing it to sit up and hit me in the grille/throat and now tonight. Both incidents were total accidents that you'd struggle to replicate if you tried, but it has made me glad I always wear a helmet. I net more than your "average club player" would so am at an increased risk of getting hit by the law of averages, but I'm starting to wonder what I did to upset the cricketing gods as they seem to have it in for me this winter.
I'm not saying everyone should go out and buy a new lid and neck guard, but this may get some thinking (or just laughing at me!)

Well I have come home, typed this post and had a couple of ciders. You can laugh, I was fine after heading the ball and the booze means I couldn't care less if you laugh! :D

Glad to hear the addition has already served its purpose and that you are ok Cam.
I still haven't got used to wearing a helmet in a match environment yet, I've tried in one game and I've been trying to get used to it in the nets and I think I'm going to give it a go this season, it's the only bit of kit the missus has encouraged me to get :-(, she knows very little about cricket so I'm going to try and persuade her that I need a newer bat for extra protection, he who dares Rodders.

Totally worth the investment. Such things can put you out of work for weeks.

Good to hear you're ok Cam. I will be ordering a stem guard ASAP. Been deliberating it for a while (mainly because of the reception it may get) but I have now decided that I'd rather get sledged than end up in hospital!

That's where I went wrong, I should have done a 180 degree pirouette after it went over my head...

I do also have trouble with those walls in games too 🤔

I can't help but be sceptical that the incident may have been blown out of proportion to justify the purchase

Glad you're OK, can't comment on the safety of the stem guard as I'm a Shrey Fanboy. My NeckGuard hasn't been called in to action yet thankfully, but I bought it primarily to protect against this sort of thing, can almost guarantee I won't get a head high bouncer on the puddings we play on in't Yorkshire, but stray throws are aplenty. £50 well spent I recon.

I wore mine for the first time today against the bola, you don't notice you're wearing it. New Masuri lid is great too, albeit a bit sweaty but I'm looking to improve my fitness over the coming weeks, and I've ordered a spare swopaband :)

Two nasty hits in the NZ Pak ODI game today. Matt Henry got clobbered on the collar bone, and the ball then ricocheted onto his stem guard.
And just now, McClennan had a SLOW BALL bouncer go through the (old style) grille and whack him in the eye. He is lucky it wasn't a full paced delivery.
I think its fair to say - its well worth the money to get the latest protection.
