McClenaghan has copped a nasty one through the grill of his Masuri.
Is it the old style grill?

The ball seems to go through sooo easily
-
Old style Masuri.
I understand there lighter and some prefer the visions but the protection just isn't there. A nasty incident.
Hopefully Mitch gets well soon and it doesn't effect him in the future.

old grill and shell.
-
The ball went through with no resistance at all. May as well not have had a helmet on
-
Serious gap between grill and peak he's got it on, not the brightest from a happy hooking tailender.
-
The grill looks like it was set to the widest opening size, hence why the ball went in so easily.

What a dill. Completely his own fault when safer helmets are freely available.
-
He is lucky this was a slower ball bouncer.
-
ouch!! wonder why is he wearing the older style masuri...
-
The hot spot view is interesting! Old lid bit still went to the trouble of a stem guard. Strange really
-
Darwinism...
-
Yes old masuri but the setting on the grill was on the large gap. Hope he makes a full recovery

that eye!!! hope he makes a speedy recovery..

It's never nice to see things like this but the technology is available and the new safety standars are there for a reason, they don't just pluck them out of thin air. If you choose to use an older helmet (which I have no problem with, I don't always wear a helmet) then you have to understand the risk you run.

Was that actually a proper stem guard or one of those Velcro shrey style ones?
-
Looks like the real one to me, just fit on to the old lid (which may explain why it came off so easily)
-
A better technique would be just as helpful as new helmet, I shudder at some of the positions modern batsmen are getting into to play the short stuff.

Think they all seem to come off upon impact as Tim Ludeman and a few others have found. Shrey is velcro fixed to the grille as is our Nek-Tek meaning it would still remain firmly in place rather than the "snap-fit" option the Stem-Guard uses.

Update on his injury.

Indeed, StemGuard just seem to be clipped. Earlier his partner, Matt Henry got hit on his neck and it deflected the stemguard which then clipped off.
There were way too many balls hitting the helmets.
-
Will they change it before or after a batsman is out hit wicket as the neck guard falls off onto the bails?
-
I can confirm they unclip when they get hit! :-[

I think due to the design only one side "should" come unclipped on impact.

Isn't going too well then is it lol!

That said they are designed for Vision Series helmets, so what it does when attached to a lid it isn't designed for isn't really fair.

He was using the older Masuri - boy, that grill gap was huge. As Boycott would say- my mum would drive a truck through that gap. Not sure why he didn't use the newer double grill masuri. Especially as he was a tailender and not top order batsman.
Also it seems the NZ cricket board provides all NZ international cricketers the newer Masuri free of cost. They recommend using the newer one but ultimately it's the player's choice.
Mitch used the older one - I don't think you should compromise on your safety. I think there were a few players hit in the BBL recently while using the newest Masuri double grill helmet & they seemed to be pretty OK with the helmet taking the blow well.

"bone fragments almost went into brain"
In case anyone still feels squeamish about purchasing the best protection, the details on his injury should hopefully convince them to not hold back in this regard. and its worth repeating, that this was a slow bouncer, so even at club level, this could happen.
