Title: Catching Cup/Thumb Setting
Post by: Ros102 on January 31, 2016, 03:45:52 PM
Hi all, part time keeper who typically keeps most weeks, am looking at investing in some new kit, do 'catching cups'/'thumb settings' as described in say some of the Kooks kit provide any help, or is it down to the talent (or lack of) of the user? Also, opinions on if gloves and pads should be same brand ;)

From what ive seen of the kook gloves, the thumb is in a less "natural" position, certainly against my pumas, but closer to the position youd be taking a catch in the cup.

As for matching kit, personally always find it classy!

Never got on with kooka gloves, find them a bit snug at the base of the thumb yet they seem to pull my little finger away from the  others.

And yes kit must match....Always. Find some gloves that work for you then look at whichever pads that brands does that you like. But always gloves first

Does that not make you a full time keeper then?  ;)

Gloves and pads should 100% be the same brand! I'm a very part time keeper (so don't have a clue what I'm on about, basically) but I like the SS Professional gloves a lot. I was very impressed by the GN Omega gloves and the GM Original Limited Edition gloves I saw recently too.

Gloves and pads most certainly don't have to match, unless you are an utter ponce that is!
Get yourself the best gloves you can and don't worry too much about the pads at all

What a load of nonsense!
Next you'll be coming on here saying that your bat, gloves, pads, bag, clothing, thigh guards, helmet, box & under crackers don't all have to be the same brand!  ;)

My keeping talent is absolute zero as I have never kept wicket in my life, but I remember watching a masterclass thing on Sky with Ian Healy where he says that basically all the catching cup should be doing is stopping your thumb spreading too far and that as a keeper you should never have to actually catch the ball there (but I suppose that is presuming your technique is reliable!)

B3 Gloves are very good, fully recommend!

I got the pads from Santa so can't wait to test them out! Feel comfy, will be my first time with matching keeping gear!

Are those the new B3 gloves or the old ones @MD2812 ?

These ones, not aware if new or old:

I bought them in August as my others broke 3 weeks before end of season. At first I was upset to see I may have bought gloves at the end of the product line, but then I remember how good they are and that feeling goes away!

It was the pads I got for xmas.

I think they look pretty much the same but I'm sure @procricket B3 mentioned that they had been updated at some point.
In any case the old ones were very good so nothing to be disappointed about.

i've not had the new style 1's but i didn't like the look of them so didn't buy them.

I have been in touch with SS who made the old design and said they would make me another pair of the old style the same(obv with out the b3 branding) but would need to order 10 pairs.

worked out about £40 a pair with shipping dont love them enough to fork out £400 and be stuck with lots of them to sell on ll

Dave is there a review / comparison between the 2 anywhere please?
Or can you explain the differences?

Hi mate,

That's different to the Kookaburra catching cup to which the OP was referring to.  Kookaburra have changed the set position of the thumb to a non-natural-but-better-prepared position to take the ball. You're referring to
the webbing between the thumb and fore finger which is now regulated so nowhere for a brand to improve on there.

Not meaning to come across as a know it all, just trying to help out. I am very much a full time wicketkeeping tragic.
