Title: Aldred Sliver Sovereign
Post by: jd163 on February 09, 2016, 09:23:16 PM
Just want to share few details about my new Silver Sovereign bat i got from Paul Aldred at Aldred Cricket bats. I have been following Paul on his Youtube channel and want to try one of his bats. After discussing the details with Paul about my batting style, low bounce pitches in US & my budget i decided to go with a Silver Sovereign shape in Butterfly 1 grade.

The pickup feel i asked for was 2-9 and the bat is bang on 2-9 in pickup with double bound handle and a single grip. Paul was very helpful when answering all my questions and providing pics during the whole process of the bat being made.I left the cleft choice on him and he sent me a pic of beautiful butterfly one cleft with 8 straight grains with the stain in the middle.

The ping is fantastic and after 2 net sessions it is opening up nicely but still needs few more sessions to become match ready. The pictures attached are sent by Paul accept the one i took after the nets. Overall is really impressed with quality of this bat & the awesome customer service Paul provides. In my opinion the finishing on this is on par with my Salix Praestantia and the stickers are not embossed but still looks very nice.

Here are the specs:

Weight on scale: 2lb 11oz
Pickup feel: 2lb 9oz
Grade: Butterfly 1
Grains: 8
Size: Standard short handle
Handle: Round with double binding with single grip(took Paul's suggestion to go with double bound instead of double grips)
Face sheet: 2
Sweet spot: Mid - Low
Price: $253 US + delivery

That's a lovely bat for the price..would you mind sharing some insight on why Paul recommended double bind over double grip?

According to him double grips gives a spongy feel to the handle which i totally agree after using the bat in nets. Being 6'2" i have big hands and this double bound handle felt better compared to double grips or big diameter.

Thanks. That makes sense. What would be your thoughts on pressing? I was watching a couple of reviews on Youtube the other night and some suggested that Paul's bats are pressed slightly harder...would you agree??

@bostoncricketer  I felt the pressing on it is a bit harder probably bcoz i told him that we use cheap quality balls which tend to break bats. But the ping is fantastic.

Lovely bat, I'm sure it'll bring you plenty of runs - I know mine has! Wouldn't agree that they're pressed harder at all, pressing and ping on mine is absolutely top notch.

Mine got a good sanding and waxing last week. I'm going bare with no scuff this year. I could possibly do with an ounce off mine really so might change grip for lighter option. It weighs 2-14 dead picks up 2-10 or just over. Think my ideal weight playing with bats over last few months is definitely 2-8 to 2-9. It pings like mad though.

Lighter grip would make the bat feel slightly heavier though, as you are taking the weight away from the area that is closest to your body.

@Kevtheplumber lovely spectre there mate.. i would order the bat wax on my next bat from Paul. Paul's bats pickups atleast 2.5 oz less than the dead weight.

well pressings a fascinating subject isn't it and everyone has a different view. my personal view is that soft pressing is a nonsensical  thing that only serves to give the appearance of bigger bats in the initial purchase. yes bats can be pressed too hard for sure which only serves to reduce the size of the middle of the bat. but if a bat is soft pressed what is going to happen is the mallet and ball will gradually press the bat itself. you can actually press a bat just with a mallet if you had the time patience and strength of arm to do it. the issue is with softer pressed bats is that they will find their optimum performance eventually by natural impact  but lots of damage can be caused in the process. its fine for professionals who don't pay for bats if that's what they like and have great quality cricket balls to hand all the time but in the end the bat only gets to feel how a well pressed bat will feel, the difference being by the time it has pressed itself the handles and bindings will have loosened up in use. where as a well pressed bat will have a firmer feel to it until the bat has had a little use to soften up the handles and bindings.

@Aldred Cricket Bats thanks Paul for the insight and making a fantastic bat.The "firmer feel" is absolutely correct to describe the pressing on my new bat.
