Title: What happened to Slazenger?
Post by: play-yourself-in on February 16, 2016, 09:44:08 PM
I've been watching back some ashes series recently, mainly 2005 and 2009 and it seems like loads of players are using Slazenger kit...I remember when it was all the rage and everyone at club level seemed to be using it.

Now it seems they are just a SD brand and have lost the respect in the industry...very sad to see I think.

Last season A bloke at our club was using an old V1200 (looked at least 15 years old) and it went like the clappers, from memory he got at least 2 tons with it.

Am I being overly sentimental and wishing for bygone days...perhaps I am!

Post 2005 i think you could throw a stone into a town centre and hit a bloke with a Slazenger SXI.

I could get really sentimental about the 1980s V12. Not that I ever owned one!

I would think those us us that can still remember the original v12 or V600 ultimate would be better off with a old one off eBay (or the forum you never know!) to get all misty eyed about just how good those bats were. And of course to appreciate British craftsmanship at its best.
Anything new would just lead to disappointment

They are now a me too brand now. After going full tilt for the past 5 years, this season they must have  asked my 2 year old to design this seasons stickers. Actually that's being mean to her. Irrelevant.

Slazenger have pretty much lost the market now. Couple of years back they were hanging on to Michael Clarke and Jacques Kallis. MC switched to Spartan and Kallis retired. They never recovered from that point onwards. I believe at some point Steve Smith was using slaz as well before switching to NB.

They need a big splash on the international arena with big name sign ups and decent stickers ...

i love Slazenger bats I've been using them for the last five seasons have had some phenomenal v12 LE's looks wise and performance. Also had 2 amazing v1200 G1+ looks and performance and last year had 3 very nice v800 g1+ bats. The softs are great I've got 2 pairs of ultimate gloves a pair pro tour Le gloves and a pair of XRlite gloves for the money they're great. I actually like this years stickers on the v100 reminds me of an old Mark Waugh bat.

Losing Steve smith just weeks before he came into the form of his life was unlucky. Michael Clarke leaving them for more money was a shame seeing how he was sponsored by them from the age of 14.

The quality of the kit is up there with any of the majors in my eyes

It's just the fact they are sold in Sports Direct isn't it?? How can anybody trust anything sold in Sports Direct?

What I know about Sports Direct is that they 'buy-out' failing brands yet continue to use the brand name, but obviously with Sports Direct manufacturing, has this happened with Slazenger as it has with Dunlop, Lonsdale, Everlast etc. It must have, who's gonna buy a bat from sports direct that retails at like £27.99 reduced from like £200.00. If there was a bat in Sports Direct worth £200 trust me you'd pay £200 for it...After all that's there modis operandi isn't it lure people in with cheap branded rubbish and watch them buy top gear at top prices...

Carl Hooper slazenger cricket bat purchased from an amazing shop in penrith, cumbria back in the 90s. I was on a family holiday and cannot even remember the name of the shop. The bloke in charge was great and let me pick up/ try every bat in the store. My dad was bored senseless but it was an amazing bat. #oldschool

That shop was cracking. It was an Intersport and had loads of cricket gear.  I bought some new gloves in there on a holiday about 5 years ago but have been informed, possibly by the forum, that they have since closed down.  I can't remember the name either.

The shop was called Sportscraft. It closed down in 2013 when the owner got to retirement age and could not find a buyer for the business.

That's the badger. Amazing shop and lovely bloke. Likened my brother (also trying bats) to Gordon Greenidge swinging bats round the shop. He then walked to the counter and muttered... after ten pints. My dad and I p###ed ourselves, my brother didn't see the funny side. Great bloke and shop.

Not to my taste but they've got Roy, Rashid, Jimmy using their gear...

Dropped of the face of the earth over here once Clarke and Smith stopped using their gear. They had some really good bats in the late 90s, the V800 was very popular when Mark Waugh was still going around. Funny how so many of those brands have just about disappeared, Duncan Fearnley, Stuart Surridge, etc, etc.

Well producing planks for the consumer market hasn't helped them either ...

Roy may appeal to some, not so much Rashid (probably a more Yorkshireised audience) but he can bat a bit.
I can't imagine Jimmy sells a lot of bats for them though  :D

Guys name was Dicky Spruce if my memory serves, top bloke and where all of Cumbria used to buy their bats, I'm sure the other Cumbrian lads on the forum would have too @liscon12 @shamelessshaun

A day out in Sprucies was the best part of the pre-season. Spent many an hour chatting about anything and everything then would always go home with more than I intended but having spent less than I expected to in the first instance. A major shame its shut down.

Also if memory serves me right, Dickie stopped stocking Slazenger in about 2010, although could be mistaken.
