So, as you may be able to guess I've had an incident tonight at the nets where Maximus No.1 (not the one on the for sale thread, so chill out before you start losing it at me) had been given out to a member of the uni team. All seemed to be going well until the final ball of what was his session and a heavily struck yorker caused mass destruction to the inside of the toe and edge which is now only being held by the goo that is for the shoe (shoe-goo). Please see the lovely crack running all over the bottom corner of what was a lovely bat :( :(

Although everyone was expecting me to flip out and lose it entirely with my fellow teammate, I was already thinking about what to do with it... Some may say firewood, others say maybe a couple of dowels and a whole roll of tape will sort it out for a little while until I can get it to explode in dramatic fashion which I am hoping to be a really boring backwards defensive to get everyone laughing. I was thinking to get it sawn above the cracked bit an use it for a stupidly big catching bat. I have still got around 2/3 of the bat left in terms of length of the blade, which had got me thinking about a crazy idea of making an SS Mongoosimus (copyrighted ;) ) if I got the handle replaced with a longer one.
As much as I would love to use this as a dig at the dryness of the bats coming out from the factory in india, at the end of the day I did not pay a big sum for the bat so realistically I could not really expect much of an extended life-span but it was, for sure a lovely bat. Just goes to show that you shouldn't let anyone use your bats if you don't fancy the heartbreak of losing it through someone else's doing ;) My main question to you lot is though; what would you do if you were in this scenario??
-
Send to M&H for one of their "BARGAIN" sales ;)
-
Sold with the tag of 'small crack to face and edge' surely they would get £200 out of it? seems in fantastic condition
-
Personally the broken section is far to large, so glue and dowels will soon give up with the amount of leverage another bottom corner Yorker will do to that.
Time to bin/catching bat it
-
Looks goosed to me
-
Never take nice bats to nets.
-
Living in a nice little student house, I don't have the tools or the cahoneys to even attempt to sort this bat out into a new Super short blade stick I can still use. So I politely ask if any of the forum sponsors fancy taking it on??
-
looks like storm damage! :D

Bat RIP

Seeing this happen far too many times to a SS

Definitely have to invest in a net bat now after seeing this.

@bostoncricketer It can happen to any peice of wood if you dig out a Yorker. What's ss got to do with it? They infact provide one of the best economical bats if everyone couldn't afford a €200 bat.. U get what u pay for.

@JG - Feel sorry for you man. It might be damaged beyond repair, but if you want to try some repair work then it could very well be of some use to you.
-
I'm not that fussed about it to be honest, to many of my teammates surprise. It does take another bat out of the situation and my collection for that matter which is actually a good thing!!! get it sorted out into some weird sort of bat and carry on using it i suppose is the plan??
-
Agreed here. SS not at fault..if your bat profile has thin toe for helping pickup..then better play Yorkers carefully. Good luck with the repair job mate. You can use it as a net bat if you manage to get it repaired.

I decided to give it to a mate who can take it down to hunts for me to make into a longer handle maxigoose (need to think of a better hybrid name). The blade should still be a decent length to use as a gimmick bat so thats fine by me. I have just stripped the stickers off now and the wood is beautiful, with no marks/blemishes/butterfly stains or anything in sight.. Now I wish it didn't get broken as it sure was something special!
When I pulled the stickers off, the silver outlines of the SS and upwards arrows on the main sticker has stayed on the bat with just the wood showing around it and I am somehow drawn to it more than when it had a lot of the blade covered with the black and red etc. I'd love to see something like that from SS and to show what I am blabbing about I will post up pictures tomorrow :)

Same happened to my CA15000 & few of my teammates CA bats. Bats from India/Pakistan seems to be over dried.
-
I've seen bigger breaks doweled up successfully, good luck with the shortening plan though!
-
Currently having my SS repaired by John at Red Ink which has a worse toe break than that!

A reminder perhaps of why we should not take a decent bat to nets

There's a definite echo in here ;)

I don't think you should take a nice bat to the nets either ;) :D
-
Need several net bats! I have 3.....
-
the only thing worse than breaking your own bat at nets is lending your best bat to a mate 'to have a try' and he breaks it then gives it back to you-which is exactly what happened to my mate last year.
I'm convinced balls people bring to nets are such poor quality and the combination of low bounce the bat's got no chance.
I know it's a bit extreme but I would personally remove someone gonands with a spoon if they damaged by bat with a cheap hockey ball.
Yes....I know it's a bit OTT but some people have to learn the hard way.

echo, er sorry, I mean second that

The silly thing was that the ball that finished the bat off was a lincs league ball, the main issue was him trying to swing as hard as possible on a yorker! Its alright though, the collection is dropping from 14 to 10 or so shortly (i hope)... I think based on the result of how long this bat has lasted (only a few months with little use) I will be making a swift move away from SS after this season. A lot of my all-white gear will be making its way out onto the for sale thread shortly :( :(
-
I'm lucky - I just get clean bowled by yorkers. :o
-
Time for last rites...
-
it will make a good fielding practice bat :D
-
Screw it together and hide the screw with bat tape... You'll be fine ;)

I played a forward defence to a Yorker yesterday. Between 65-70mph. Only just refurbed this myself 2 weeks ago. Will have to get the glue and clamp out again. I've netted with old bat last 2 weeks but thought I'd use match bat for half a session. It's gutting. (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160222/e0e4a16d04d85116c3a5f80ca516dd10.jpg)

Glue I can understand, what would you be clamping though? ???
Pack the crack (giggidy) with glue then knock the toe in a bit more me thinks
-
Difference between yours and mine is that mine is hanging off basically. Yours seems almost new in comparison ;)
-
There a crack above on side too so I'll glue and clamp that.
