Hi All,
I wanted to put a proposal together for cricket teas this season for my club. We have a "tea lady" for most of the games this year who can cook. Previous years we have all mucked in and taken it in turns to do tea, normally meaning loads of rubbish from Asda. The problem is the tea bill has raced to £50 and more a game and a fair chunk get's binned.
What I wanted to do was to look at reducing the bill back to £40 a game but focussing on healthy food. I'm thinking pasta salads, rice salad, fruit - more in tune with food for playing sport than chocolate cake. I'm hoping by using cheap ingredients (pasta/rice for example), it can also provide a reasonable volume of food for 22-24 people.
Has anybody else look at this?

My captain abd our opening bowler are pretty much health freaks amd so this any way as they don't want us to fill up on crap and not be able to sprint around the field. It tends to be whole wheat pasta as well because it fills you up more (so needing less, costing less). Although we buy cakes for the other team just to slow them down! Its all tactical to be honest
-
Healthy foods at tea?
You are dead to me.
-
no answer to this, at least we hav'nt found one, in 2015 we subbed out teas to the tune of £80 quid a game-yes you heard that correct.
What I do know is if you have a tea lady who enjoys doing it, lavish that woman like your own mother, always remember her birthday and if she's a bit frisky send one of the young handsome lads to take one for the team.
Really...it's the only way.
:)

We had to pay £60 once for tease that could have fed 2 people and were stale!
Safe to say this year when we play them we will show them what teas really are!

I'd expect more than just a tease for £60, a bit of touching at the very least

Im being very serious i asked him 5 times if he meant £60 i was so shocked i was expecting £20 (if that)! Not only that we didnt have a cuppa till tea had finished because their electricity in their shack wasnt working! Livid!

Just do what a team in our league does, 2 trays of cheese sandwiches and a 24 multipack of walkers. That'll be £33 please!
Needless to say we ventured elsewhere.
-
Luckyily in our league you don't pay oppo for teas anymore as its just case you sort tea for both teams when you are t home.
I'm not sure of all this healthy options though Nick as you may get some who really go for it but I'd think most want the cake etc as that's what cricket teas are.
Maybe poll the players before even thinking about it as you don't want to provide all this tea and people don't eat it
-
Ideally I wouldn't have teas at all as I generally don't feel like eating anything, it's all party/terrible food that I can't be bothered with and am more focused on just waiting for the game ton continue. Haven't asked how much it's incorporated into our match fee (£15)
-
Teas are my enemy now... Gone are the days of being a middle order who, if batting second, could overdose on all the cakes etc, I'm now an opener - so either fielding, or opening the batting I don't fancy being stodged up on cake!
But, it's all part of cricket to have a ton of cakes and sandwiches. Luckily our 1s have a lad's mother who's a passion for baking, and fully retired so enjoys something to do! Top notch stuff.
Verdict: Avoid Pasta and healthy stuff. Cricket is one of the remaining sports where you can still be a big lad and a pro! :D
-
I happened to be looking through one of the teas thread earlier and there were some terrific looking teas!! A few had curry and rice which might be an idea, you can disguise the healthiness with the curry :D
-
Teas being left over, never had that issue as the groundsman and spectators Hoover up whatever is left after the players attack them.
As for healthy food, that's a crap idea! Cricket teas are meant to be value, cake and more cake!
-
Interesting topic. We used to pay £10 a man for teas. Sausage rolls sandwich and piece of pie. This at our club. I quickly changed that. I'm normally all for a pizza sandwich and a huge plate of sausages [emoji52]. But this year in on a health kick. Gone from 20.5st to 17.9 in 2 months so trying to continue that so a wholewheat pasta dish and a couple of different fruits would go down really well !

If I was offered pasta salad, rice salad (what even is that?!) and fruit, I'd respectfully decline and go elsewhere. Just my view :D

If we were in the same team you could jump in my car, as I'd be off to the chippy as well! ;)
-
I played one game in the thirds last summer,we were batting and about 4 o'clock some of our team left and came back with 2 bags of chips which we shared out.
I said to them I've never seen that happen in a league game ever and then one of them offered me a can of lager and just said 'this is the 3's we do what we want'
Absolutely marvellous
-
Sack teas off in Saturday cricket but keep it for Sunday's

Last year we had "Mr Chips" do our teas. all the usual beige food on offer but with the added benefit of chips and other chippy related items.
I did enjoy the teas but i do like it when there is less carbs on offer.

I can't even imagine the outrage that would be caused if any of our teams were served up a healthy tea of cheap pasta and rice!
Just not cricket in my opinion

Not just cheap pasta and rice but 3 less cakes with pasta and fruit as well as sweets just a nice mixture! I can guarantee the kids will not eat any of the healthy stuff!

Is it fair to say that the responses here may be a reflection of the different motivations or ethos some of us with regards our cricket playing?
Some of us value the tradition and pleasure surrounding a notion of the best way to spend a summers day - in a field, leather on willow, battenburgs, sandwiches and a pint of bitter etc etc. that's not to say that the competition angle is sidelined, but potentially secondary. We may love the team and play for combined glory, but being sporting and civil etc may come first.
Others may take the competition, league position, points etc more seriously than the having fun/nostalgic aspects of a sunny Saturday afternoon.
Therein lie the 2 differing views on teas - slow release complex carbs and lean protein and "sports" drinks (marketing BS to the core btw with very little true medical benefit) vs pies, cakes and pints of tea or other bitter.
I don't think there's anything wrong with either - but I think it should probably reflect to some extent what ppl want - or else you run the risk of further alienating ppl either way.
Cheers

Unless you have help, a mother, wife/gf etc tea's are so hard now. We all bring a plate supposed to carry enough for 2 but the young guy's seem happy to bring a packet of lollies, it's another dying tradition.

Amen. It's a weekend game of amateur cricket, we're not playing for England. Hold off on the quinoa (other superfoods are available)

That's why I mentioned rice and curry. Wholegrain rice, lean chicken and just check the sauce you use. Balanced and nutritious without shouting in your face its good for you!!

perhaps another thing to consider is I don't know about the majority on here but in league cricket we actually get 20 mins for tea, I open the batting OR AT LEAST I DID BEFORE I WAS DROPPED NOT THAT IM ANGRY ABOUT IT AT ALL!!! >:( >:( >:(
so.... I get in off the field, grab a sandwich, glass of juice, blow some clouds with my vape machine and strap the pads on-tea is over before it's begun...
only on Sundays do we have 30 mins actually for tea.
I would think there is some mileage in Procricketer's suggestion the actual format of teas is now more for Sunday cricket rather than Satuday league cricket........
