Hi
Not sure where to post this but I'll try here.
I'm looking to get a longer bat. Not sure wheteher to get a long handle or long blade...Opinions please?
But my main question is; I live near Gatwick, Can you point me in the direction of the nearest bat makers please? I'm considering a custom bat, I have seen Phantom and Aftab was really great with his products but I'd like a second opinion and ideally speak to a bat maker.
I'm 6'4", mainly a bowler but converting to batting. Play league on saturdays and friendlies sundays. I now open the batting. I pretty much only play the drive (or at least everything off the front foot)
Who is the best ad nearest to help me please?
Thanks in advance
Rich

Who do you play for rich? Closest is either H4L which has very high praise off here Newbery (brighton) Chase near basingstoke, Dunamis (Gosport) not sure of any others
-
Long handles only help if you hold the bat very high, long blades are the way to go.
-
I would suggest making contact with Matt and he can make you a long blade to your speck or long handle he has some very serious willow in at the moment and I am sure your find something you like if not plenty of great sponsors on hear I sure Asad at Uzi or Jake at vitas can sort something out as well
-
I had a long blade made by H4L for a friend, he's played a heck of a lot of cricket and it's the best bat he's had.
-
I'm 6ft4 and trialled long blade and long handle but found long blade much much better
had them from most makers around as like to try new things
current ones im using are from H4L and aldred which are both top notch
-
I believe 'Tall' Paul from IJC uses a long blade H4L and rates it very highly.
Here it is : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhLiWHQMBAo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhLiWHQMBAo)

At what height do you need to be to warrant a long blade? or is it just preference?

just preference I think as I'm sure chanderpaul used a long blade and he was small but some 6ft+ people on here don't use them
in my opinion when you pass 6ft you should look into them to see if they suit you as it has helped me greatly with the way I play and more comfortable at the crease plus the middle seems to be more where I need it

It's worth checking the vid - Paul explains why he uses one.

I play for Abinger Sundays and think I'm playing for Horstead Keynes on Saturdays as I fancy seeing some Sussex grounds now I've moved to the Gatwick area.
I'll look at Dunamis, Uzi sports and Vitas.
SimonMay, How do I contact Matt? Who is he etc?
I'll take another look at H4L as people keep rating them but I just didn't fall in love with them.
I really like the look of Phantom bats but I'd like to speak to the person making the bat etc. They had suggested long handle but now I'm thinking long blade. I really like the 2x custom bat deal, one to practice with, one to keep for matches.
I get yorked a lot, play straight over the top of balls that bounce low and feel I'm having to stoop; I play very upright on the front foot. Plus the majority of the balls I hit cleanly are on the low side of the middle, therefore the ones that are slightly low are getting towards the toe.
Definitely going to get a longer bat,

I'd say over 6'3" as a rough guide as I'm that height and for me it's borderline whether to use one or not, have used them with great success in the past but mostly use SH these days. Don't think they make a huge difference unless you're exceptionally tall or get yorked a lot, it's more about getting the middle in the right place which can easily be done with a normal blade. By no means is there any kind of rule though, if someone is 5'2" and feels they bat better with a long blade then why not use one.
edit: @dickyboy if you're getting yorked a lot then a long blade is definitely a good option, that was what led me to try them at first in my younger days and it 100% helped. Never owned a LH but tried other peoples' and hated them.

I'm 6'1 but well built (and quite fat) just thinking it might help keep me up straight and therefore playing straighter

Don't see that it would help with that? Some people do like the extra length on the grounds that it makes it more comfortable to lean on the bat in your stance, but you should straighten up when playing the ball anyway and as soon as you pick the bat up there's no difference to how you move through the shot.

You'll have to get in the queue to meet that batmaker, he doesn't deal with the public.
I can arrange for you to visit hunts county bats and have a bat made in front of you. G1 is £185 and I'm sure we could arrange for a cheaper grade as a net bat to be made at the same time.
I can also arrange for you to visit Gray Nicolls for this, but you won't get much change out of £1000 I'm afraid. Don't shout at me I don't set the prices :)
I'm ioen to being corrected but Dunamis have been forum sponsors for a while now and I'm yet to see anything suggest they make their bats.
I would reccomend Matt at h4l, the brand has been incredibly popular for us this year and we've done a number of bespoke bats for people, of course if you want to visit you may as well go straight to him as he is a fellow forum sponsor

I'm 6'3 but am pretty flexible so use a SH without feeling that I am stretching or bending too much.
I have thought about trying a long blade for quite a while but never got round to it! But as I have one or two it would be silly not to at least try a LB myself! May try one in Monday night nets.
I would agree that H4L would be a good place to start with but there are lots of quality options just on this forum alone!

Should give a mention to John @Red Ink Cricket actually, he made me a lovely long blade copy of an old bat of mine last year.

Vitas Cricket - How come Hunts County can do it for such a good price? Are they still as good? what can be done?
Sounds amazing!
-
anyone have any idea how much extra weight a long blade is? (roughly) I'm 6'2" with a dodgy back (and technique) but i like to hold the bat quite low so i can get a good feel for the oval shape of the handle. Problem is anything feeling /picking up over 2'10 and I'm struggling!
-
adds about an ounce or 2 I think but I find no difference in pick up with my long blades compared to sh but that may just be me being dull

The Hunts price is higher, £185 is our price when purchased through us.
Anything you want (within reason) can be done. More details and photos here: http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=33548.0 (http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=33548.0)

Thanks mate. Yes I can make you a long blade to specs. Made quite a few over the last 6 months so familiar with getting the extra wood balanced

Hunts quality is excellent. The LB Turbo Revolution I got from Jake is a lovely bat!

Where do county make there bats? Near me (gloucestershire) there is Martin Berrels who i think make county bats but not sure?

I'm fairly sure he used to but doesn't any more.

is the revolution the bat with a hole through the middle tim?
-
Hunts County make their bats in Huntingdon in an industrial estate just off the A14.
-
Martin Berrill used to work for county as a batmaker. He sells the Hunts county brand through his retail shop, I am not sure if he makes any bats but he's certainly capable of it
