Please can someone tell me when a toe insert is needed in a bat??? and whats the purpose of it ???

Laminated toe is used to strengthen the weak part of the toe. Old technique, was standard on bunch of bats in the 80'es.
Some refurbs or repair shops use them to fix a split toe. Proven both useful and absolutely rubbish, depends on the size of the split.

Toe of the bat is generally a weaker area. The insert strengthens it.

I believe it prevents a crack from going from the front, to the back of the bat

Timber cracks more easily along the grain than across it. The toe insert breaks up the direction of the grain in what is often a weak area of the bat. Think of it working in a similar way to how plywood gets its strength.

Well my friend is using it wihout any complains yet.... he is very happy with the repair....

Once used oak as an insert it made an awful sound and there was no rebound
