Hello hello,
As I haven't been around for a loooong time I thought time to post.
The season is nearly here, how prepared are you? What are your goals? How will you achieve this?
Have there been mayor changes for you since last season?
-
Since last season I've changed my whole kit twice, put on about 3 stone and stopped triggering when I bat.
Basically I'm more fat and move less, roll on the cakes at tea this Saturday!
I'm not too ambitious for this season, all I want to do is win my team's bowling award, get promoted (preferably as champions) and average 20 batting at 11.
To achieve this I just need to bowl well and tactically drop catches off anyone on a similar number of wickets to me ;)
My plan to average 20 involves a solid defence and plenty of red ink, and maybe the odd run out if I don't fancy the bowling haha
-
With @simonmay5 joining our my team this season the main difference I see from last season is at least a doubling or tripling increase of bats in the changing room from last season, however with our new pavilion having now been completed our 1sts are striving for promotion after missing out by just 6 points last season. Personally no real aims just as many runs and wickets as possible would be nice with no specific target

I gave him my coffin to store all his extra match day bats in!
He actually had his kit bag plus the coffin full of bats last time I saw him ;)

Nice thread, few similar i think but without specific questions.
I'm fairly prepared, just a tight hamstring which I'm having treatment on, not been injured in any of my previous seasons and didn't want to risk anything. I've set myself for the past 4 years to get past 30 league wickets and to improve on total wickets for the club each year. However, the past 2 seasons my action has been off (probably due to this hamstring niggle without me even noticing) so this hasn't been possible. My other goal is to improve on my patience when bowling and not to get bored to quickly, I've discovered I can bowl a decent slower ball which causes the batsman trouble 90% of the time, and i resort to my 'variations' too often. Also with my action being so poor i've lost any ability to swing the ball in the way i want to which discourages me hugely!
My batting goals is to improve my average for all games to above 23 runs, last 2 seasons have been 19.67 and 17.79. Hopefully this will improve dramatically with @Buzz's help that he has given me (can already feel a difference, and people who i thought were quick, aren't as quick anymore! So i guess i have more time)

hahaha twice? as a number 11 bat? All the gear no idea kind of thing?
fat and fun right? atleast when you dive you bounce back up, makes life ten times easier hawhaha
drop them catches and get that award!! Go for it! dont forget to make it look like you tried

I am hoping and praying I'll be fit and well to play have health problems at the moment result yesterday's CT kiDey scan in ten days time.
-
My aim is to be known as the guy that "plays the reverse scoop too much"
But seriously last year I opened, scored 4 50's in first 5 games then did not a lot so ended up down at 6/7 with an average of 30 for the season.
I've been confirmed as opener for the first few games again, so maybe I'll be happy to still be opening come September and average 30 again.
Oh and midweek I want my Third career ton! Will be 3 years since my last one. Should have had one since but oppo didn't score enough runs in the first innings(81 of 34balls chasing 120)

As a bowler id say, calm down bowl your ball and dont try to trick the batsmen. the most frustrating thing for a batsman with a slower bowler is getting the dots against him. enjoy the fact he cant hit you away and take pleasure out of seeing them try to create shots and making mistakes. Have a stable base before trying different variations, id say have 1 variation and use that at different moments but not to often. stick to your own game!
-

A team that picks on performance? Never. You're telling me that because you've opened you don't get to open all season, regardless of getting out for less than 10 for the exact same shot 4 games in a row? or because you're the skippers mate?
You're having me on.
-
Having just had a very good couple of seasons of sport, picking up my old clubs bowling award for most wickets, and just finishing the rugby season as top try scorer for my team, I'm hoping to back it up with another successful season for the new club.
Aiming for around 50 poles for the season, I'd like to score a 100 but think it's very unlikely!

In my mind I bat like Don Bradman, to anyone else watching it's more like Chris Martin though. It's clearly the bat's fault though so I keep changing it until I find one that makes my batting better, and if you change bat you need matching softs. It get's expensive but I enjoy buying new kit more than I do using it :-[
Being the team fatty is great, other people get put where they have to chase the ball! I do love a good dive in the field though, it looks like you put a decent effort in and you get to lay down while a teammate retrieves it ;)
-
Hopefully with the few new signings we have made, I'll get back to the seconds! At least there I'll get a spot in the top 5 to accrue some runs rather than batting 9/10/Jack in the 1's

Exactly what i'm going to do this year! must have been brought on a few time last year with out skipper saying "Bowl 3/4 of your slowies this over", "Give him the chin music, mate", "how quick do you feel today?" or the best one has been "throw down some leggies mate and i'll stump him" this one actually worked though... done him with a googly! Scenes!

nice, what changed compared to the first few games? if you can do it in the first games you can do it in the last.

Amusingly I am the skippers mate and would have stayed there all season, but I asked for a lower spot to get my form back, and my replacement took his chance and we left as is.
He is off to tour Peru all summer, and the other opener has just broke his hand.
Me and the newly promoted ex second team skipper now get the job. I'm on hols for game 3, so hopefully do enough in games 1 and 2 to go straight back up there game 4.
Or just throw a massive tantrum.

good! my coach always told me. anyone could trick a batsman but only a real bowler can control him. i prefer 6dots to 1 wicket. Make sure you're confident and feel calm dont try to hard cause it wont go right.

I'm batting really well, positive movements to pace and using my feet well to the spinners... shame as soon as soon as I get onto grass that will no doubt go down the drain :(
Another point is im still not exactly sure who I want to play for this season with only two/three weeks to go til the season...

Nice, get some enjoyable cricket in! im hopefully/maybe doing the same. just going for the game.

just remind yourself how you feel now and dont over think it. relax when you get onto the pitch and know what you can do.
bleedin eck you lot get that long to choose?
-
Positive words, thanks @LeonieKelly18 i'll keep those in my head
Being up north means i'll probably have even longer than that with the weather unfortunately.
Best of luck to everyone for their seasons!

I always enjoy it, regardless! my competitive streak sometimes gets the better of me though and wants some batting partners that don't leave me stranded as the last man!

i love hearing that! good on you! its good being competitive just dont run your team mates out!

Most important thing for me is just playing, really. Assume I'll start fairly low down the order and if I get a useful score or two shift a spot or two up.

i got that far but no links nor uploads work
-
Under the personalised picture area, there will be 4 button options - one of which should be 'Specify avatar by URL' which you need to click.
Then you should be able to enter your photobucket direct link or other photo link in the URL section?

Done a fair bit of work on my bowling action over the winter so early season the aim will be to get the changes grooved in. Felt ready for it in nets tonight, first time I've really picked up some rhythm since making the changes and bowled exactly how I wanted to, definitely quicker and more consistent with line/length/swing. Performance target with the ball is match or beat my wickets tally of 40 from last season, hopefully this will be helped by bowling more overs.
With the bat, a little more consistency - last year I got 50+ or was not out every time I made it past 15 in the league, but would like to be out early less often! Should be batting higher so coming in with more than 20 overs to go more regularly will hopefully give me the motivation to bat long more often rather than giving it away going for quick runs. Also to get the elusive ton!
Team-wise, I had a little run-in with our 1s captain last season and ended up in the 2s a lot. Change of captain thankfully, aim is to get my 1s spot back and nail down a regular position rather than being shunted around every week (season before I played every game in the 1s but batted everywhere from 1-8 and never in the same spot more than 2 weeks in a row).
-
I'll be glad to get out of the house :) should be the first season in quite a few years that I can play a lot of games. Hopefully I can get one 50 this season as batting isn't my strongest suit. I'm a much better keeper so hoping to get a sh*t load of stumping, preferably some athletically pleasing leg side stumping, they always feel impressive :)
-
This will be my sixth year playing and I've been netting hard again over the winter.
Last year I only scored 6 league 50's which should have been 11 out of 18 games but I let myself down. This year hopefully I can be far more clinical and convert into 50's and convert a few in tons (probably should have had 3 tons last year). Only avg's 37 and was very disappointed in myself so would like nearer 50 in the league this year.
(Excluding not outs, never include not outs )

Fantastic reply! Not only speaking for yourself but also for the team.
Goodluck coming season, sounds like your ready to achieve some goals!

Nice! Enjoy! Make sure those leg side stumpings look as impressive as they feel. Seen some dying Whales in my time hahaha.

Show off! Only 6.. pff haha. It's good to have a goal, something to aim at. If you don't achieve it, try to find the cause and work in that. Don't just repeat repeat repeat cause apparently somewhere you go wrong.
But if you don't achieve it don't be to hard on yourself, make yourself proud next game.
-
BTW @ProCricketer1982 how have you been, it's been a while ahahaha.

Well as it's my first year playing in a new country on astro wickets at a standard that is far above my own I'm just hoping I don't end up hating cricket and pack it in altogether!

In the USA at the moment...longing for the lush green fields of England and the sound of leather on willow!
-
Don't worry, the astro isn't too bad once you get used to it. I played on it a lot too. Just it's annoying when not taken care of properly.
-

That is interesting. Also, I think it is true of a batter as well. If as a batter, you can control the ebb and flow of an inning, then I think you are in a great place. Hit when you want and defend when you want.

I play on Astro and it is a lot of fun.

Who's your 1s skipper this year @edge ?
-
Made the conversion from an offie who bats a bit at 6, 7, 8 to opening bat who bowls a bit of a part time stuff last year, averaged high 20's and made 4 50's so hoping to improve on that, especially giving it away once set, getting past 50 four times and past 75 none isn't good enough, especially as we lost two of those games.
Have had issues with my hip and fingers that have stopped me bowling much at training so hopefully the work done on that over the winter will pay dividends and i can go back to being a frontline bowler also.
Aiming for 600 runs including at least one ton, and 20 wickets.

I wish we all could just go from a bowler to openings bat.. like it's nothing hahaha. What's the problem with the hip and fingers?

Both out regular openers had second kids and vanished for half the season, I'd have zero chance opening the batting on wet Scottish wickets but over here on Astro with the white ball it's mines easier, ball moves for maybe an over or 5 and then it's fill your boots.
Fingers is some sort of joint stiffness (doctor doesn't know what yet), which isn't ideal for a finger spinner, hips just old age I think!
-
@Kulli haha so a lucky break for you, proved yourself and ready to nail it this season.
Stiffness in the joints, have you seen a physio? Is it like a painful stiffness of more like it feels like it tired?
Do enough exercise and stretching(and drinking water I know I know) but that should help the hip slightly. Often the hip cartilage need's "oiling" but that's what happens by moving it around. BECOME LIKE SHAKIRA AND ALL YOUR PROBLEMS FADE AWAY.

Yup, gotta take those chances when they come.
It's pretty painful when I stretch my fingers to hold the ball, have seen the doctor, possibility it's the onset of some sort of join issues.
Physio thinks hip issues were caused by my body compensating for previous problems, but I'll not clog the season goals thread up anymore with my list of ailments.
-
On a personal note would be fun to hang onto the batting and bowling awards for the 1st team (being only 3rd person in the 130 year history to win both in a single season) and win league player of the year as was robbed last year even though I was in the team of the year. Hopefully the 6am runs will help this ( @petehosk keeps telling me its good for you but I don't see it yet)
But mainly to carry on my role of bringing the youngsters through and helping them develop as that's my main aim now I don't play any minor county stuff (far too old for that now), quite happy moving from slip to mid on/off to help the young bowlers during the game with plans and calming them down at times
-
Turn good looking net sessions into runs in the middle
Take wickets
Don't drop catches
-
I'm starting this season playing for a new side, I've felt good netting and even my bowling has been better than it normally is.
I'm not sure where I'm going to fit in with regards to batting, I'd love to open as I prefer the ball coming on to the bat and the field in. Not top fussed for bowling as I've only bowled 1 over in the last few years although I did take a wicket in it!
From a team point of view they've been a bit of a yoyo team over the last few seasons and would have been relegated at the end of last year if it hadn't been for a league reshuffle so I think a successful relegation fight is the minimum requirement. I'll also be playing my old team and although I left on very good terms I'm kinda dreading playing them!
-
My team have just joined the Herts League and we've been put into the very bottom tier. I'm not expecting cricket of any quality, but it won't be any different to the last couple of years of terrible Saturday friendly cricket that we've been accustomed to.
-
Who's your 1s skipper this year @edge ?
@thecord Dave Sims? Our keeper. I've taken control of the midweek by the way, think you'll be about for the t20 at yours this year?
Should have mentioned that in goals for the season actually - I'm undefeated in games I've captained for my current club, only got 3 midweek games to play but looking to keep the record going.
-
Started off netting better than I ever have but haven't been able to net for weeks now (various reasons) - add that in to moving to a different area of the country part way through a season I don't think it's going to go too well!
-
I play as an all rounder but since taking captaincy my batting has fallen off a bit but I was happy with my bowling last season (mix of medium pace and offies), main aim this season is to be more successful with the bat and get my average back into the high 20's early 30's as it was only about 18/19 last season!
Actually scratch all that, my only goal for the season is to clean bowl @liscon12 and then hit him for the biggest six Cumbria has ever seen when he comes on to bowl :D
-
Joined a club as a player this season but have a played with a few of the players previously and was treasurer before the clubs merged i was already a committee member. Signed for the club as I missed playing on the 3rd and 4th team ground its a ground that i have played on since a schoolboy and have happy memories
Hopefully I'll be fit to play for the 4 ths but if not I'll be at the ground helping out on match day.
-
Will have an idea tomorrow, see neurosurgeon to discuss op. Realistically looking at 2017 :(
-
Nothing less than to be leading wicket taker in the league, 200 runs from the tail (violently) and to eat an entire Swiss-roll without using my hands at tea.
-

Hahahaha, shhhhtt let me be smooth. I just got back I need to keep leaving a great impression haha!
Plus atm I've been dropped to our thirds. So that's gonna be fun.
But you know it's all banter! Keep me updated and keep doing well!
-
I need some comfort as oldest or 2nd oldest in team now
Even local paper put me in as veteran 😡😡😡😡😡😡
You'll get back up though I've seen the vids of you playing
You actually know which end of the bat to hold and that's cheating
-
First season as a vice-skip and still one of the youngest in the team at 22; aiming for minimal drops behind the sticks and a ton would be nice, bout time I scored another.

HAHAH before I stopped I got told I was a vet at 20. Don't worry old man, if you still kick ass who cares what they call you at least they're talking.
Depends on how the body holds up. Thursday will be my first training session in nearly 2 years.
Just hope the knees and ankles don't go all weird again.

Nice it's so much fun to be the youngest and impress the older lot who expect you be a little kid. Hahaha

Tallest and the youngest, it's a great combination. My techniques got so lazy when batting over the past few years, determined to get in back to where it used to be!! Need to spend some time with a coach to get scoring tons again!!
-
1. Break "Highest number of balls taken to get off the mark" award (40ish?)
2. Get boo'd by own team
3. Get dropped to 11
4. Break "Highest number of balls taken to get off the mark" award again.
Should have that cracked by May.
-

The team I play in had an average age of 20-something last season, we were definitely a fielding side compared to some opponents who had "seen it all before"
That said, there's no better sight in club cricket than the 70-odd year old 'slow bowler', who can't bat and has to be hidden in the field, tieing the opposition in knots and taking (at least) 3 fer nothing every week.

Used to be a middle order bat, got promoted to opening slot. Had couple of decent seasons but, last season has been horrible.
1) be consistent in middle order
2) move back top opening slot
3) break all my asian made bats and get UK made bats :)

Come out to bat... 'which way is he turning it mate, it doing much?' ... 'er, he's not bowling spin, just play straight'
-
Going back to my old club after trying somewhere else for a year, so I will most likely start in the 4th xi. Therefore I shall hope to be into the 3rd xi by the end of may, and would like to actually take some wickets opening the bowling rather than havemy first 6 overs 0-10 every week. Granted the economy is good but that's because in the lower divisions they just see off any bowler that could potentially cause a problem.
Batting wise I'm looking to get promoted to about 7, and finally get a 50!
-
@thecord Dave Sims? Our keeper. I've taken control of the midweek by the way, think you'll be about for the t20 at yours this year?
Decent chance I'll be around yea depending on where I am for work in that day.
-
Hopefully the 6am runs will help this ( @petehosk keeps telling me its good for you but I don't see it yet)
@roco to be fair the running I love! But I never mentioned getting up at that ungodly hour to do it! :o
-
Hi @LeonieKelly18, welcome back. How's the ... knee (was that what was injured?)?
My season is a total return to about 6 years ago. Back playing every weekend and 2nd team captain again. Trying to bring the fun and winning back to the group after a bad season last year. New kit, and an awesome bat off @FattusCattus which is an absolute gun of a Dynadrive.
Pitch is absolutely sodden though and going to be a good couple of weeks before it's playable unless we get a dry windy couple of days.
-
Rather than just having private conversations in the thread...my season is likely to be pretty tough!
After three successive promotions our 1st team are now playing at the highest level we have ever played and unfortunately we have lost one regular 1st teamer and not added anyone of 1st team quality.
On a personal note I have not made much of a contribution in the last couple of seasons having suffered a run of injuries, ill health and a variety crap in my personal life. I've been unable to decide whether to pack in wicket keeping due to a run of broken fingers and have already made it clear to my captain that if he wants me to play in the 1st team he needs to find somebody else to open as I have lost all confidence in the role.
I've made all that sound really negative but despite the challenges ahead I'm really looking forward to the season! With the higher standard comes some new grounds that I have never played at and as a club we are busy with applications for new net facilities and the possibility of a new and extended pavilion. It's also my last hurrah as club secretary having made the club aware of my intention to step down at our last AGM. Feel it's time to get back to actually enjoying the great game!
-
Best of luck for the season Phil, if you guys can keep playing the way you have the past couple of seasons when I've played against you you'll do just fine in that league. Mean this completely in a good way but never seen a team that does a better job of adding up to more together than they do as individual players!
-

Cheers Ed! That's a very accurate description of our team, no stars or anything. It's a running joke at the club about our 1st team captain's end of season speeches and how many times he repeats the phrase "everyone played their part"!
-
Tallest and the youngest, it's a great combination. My techniques got so lazy when batting over the past few years, determined to get in back to where it used to be!! Need to spend some time with a coach to get scoring tons again!!
hahaha probably a giant compared to me then.
Yes that's the spirit! Go for it
-
1. Break "Highest number of balls taken to get off the mark" award (40ish?)
2. Get boo'd by own team
3. Get dropped to 11
4. Break "Highest number of balls taken to get off the mark" award again.
Should have that cracked by May.
HAHAHA can I join in with that? It sounds like fun!!
-
The team I play in had an average age of 20-something last season, we were definitely a fielding side compared to some opponents who had "seen it all before"
That said, there's no better sight in club cricket than the 70-odd year old 'slow bowler', who can't bat and has to be hidden in the field, tieing the opposition in knots and taking (at least) 3 fer nothing every week.
That's my future, 70 and still annoying the .... out of people!! And taking wickets at the same time

Sounds like a solid plan, especially getting a UK made bat! Some really good ones out there especially if you go to a bat manufacturers and not one of the big brands.
Some good ones in the forum too!

Having lost nearly 5 stone since last season I'm hoping for a good one. Finally back bowling well. Seem to be able to bowl a googly again. And batting I feel as if I have a lot more time at the crease. So hopefully see a good 3-400 runs and a good amount of wickets. Bring n the 23rd of April :)
EDIT also been cycling over 70 miles a week so the fitness is improved massively. No more bashing boundaries. Play the field and poke the gaps

It's always difficult when changing clubs, especially going back as you have to start at the bottom again.
get to the 3rds, try to watch out focusing on your economy as the lower level often dosent care about that. You'll be hit away by awful shots, don't let that get you down!
Goodluck!

Hey! Thank you! My ankle ligament is doing great, had surgery last year january and was in a wheel chair for 3/4 months. Now it's just 4 other problems. Due to having had bad medical advice in the very beginning I started walking differently which has messed a lot up. I now have cartilage damage in both knees and ankles. Coming Thursday wil be my first slow starting session with the guys. I have to see how it goes, as 2 months ago I was told I wouldn't ever play again and it sorta got better since so now they've said I can try and see what happens.
Good to hear that your back and enjoying it! Sounds like your doing a lot of good work!
Go make some advertisement for @FattusCattus this season with that bat! Haha

Oehw sassy,
Its difficult when one of the team leaves to find anyone to fill their place as they won't be part of the team straight away. But only time will tell maybe someone will step up!
I understand how you feel with all the drama around cricket, it's so difficult especially with things you can't control.
Your captain has the Confidence in you, he has your back. Maybe he could help you find your confidence back, maybe a number 3 to get bat on ball and them slowly work back up??
Just seriously never forget to enjoy the game how ever rough and harsh it can be.

Keep me updated on how you go on!!

Rubbish :(

Ahw no don't say that, why!?
-
HAHAHA can I join in with that? It sounds like fun!!
Of course! I'll teach you how to leave like a Pro. Nobody shoulders arms as gracefully as myself. Hitting the ball is so overrated :D
-
First season at my new club proper, looking forward to nailing a top 4 batting spot bat long score big is my aim, on,yo play alternate weeks so would like 600 league runs and 35 dismissals behind the stumps would be a great season. After last season anything wil be a bonus as hated cricket last year until I went back to my old club for last 5 games but 200mile round trip not viable all season so joint club I played T20 for lady year.
Been netting very well so looking good
-
Seen my specialist today, lumbar decompression surgery scheduled in 3 months, so this season is a no go. Season of heckling my best mate/opening partner, will make us both feel better about it! :D

Not great but I hope everything works out well. I'm sure you'll be the first time volunteer for scoring and drinks duty each week? 😂
-
We have scorer, players kids usually do drinks, I was thinking of having a go with the camera
-
I am looking to start in the 3rd XI as i want to be a batsmen this year (previously a bowler). Work my way up into top 6 in the 2's by the end of the season. aiming for over 600 league runs (across the board).
-
Touring game today, dinky 56* not out retired off 72 balls. We posted 239-7 in the end off 45 overs and they got 241-9 off 48.6 overs
Good pre season friendly
-
Jealous of people playing this early in the year, our pitch is miles away from being ready still!

almost 500 runs scored in April :o :o wow!
-
Hopefully my coming season will improve due to listening. Back to basics and I hope the rest will follow.
Listening to what I've been told and what I'm telling myself.
Focus on that bowling hand.
Move head, feet will follow.
Don't over hit.
Don't over think the run up.
Stay upright, don't slide away.
Don't over force the delivery.
Work on the upper body so I'm not forcing the throw-ins.
Know that doing the basics well will take care of the rest.
Enjoy the lovely cricket gear I've bought thanks to the forum.
-

First outdoor nets today. Absolute Quagmire. No batting practice, just fielding practice. Good laugh though, ruined my training kit diving around the swampy outfield.
Roll on Next Saturday! 😅
-
My season may be non existent.
Meant to be a club friendly on Sunday, but when I asked yesterday if on I got "been busy text going out later"
Still no text.
Oppos ground isn't looking to be fit for week after in cup game. And then I'm on holiday.
All that winter training and then I may miss 4 weeks of cricket. Haha, might as well not bother in 2016.
Bring on 2017 I say!
-
almost 500 runs scored in April :o :o wow!
It's a friendly, everyone wants a bat.. No point skittling a team out for an ego boost. Pre season is about bowlers just having a bowl and batsmen getting time in the middle, win or lose is irrelevant
-
With a high ranking local club folding, an ever improving wicket and facilities attracting more players and recent league and cup success, we may have more players than we need. Although I have had a fair amount of success over the past few seasons I may put myself of out on loan to any struggling Somerset league club.
I'm getting a bit old and need to make way for younger people in the 1sts. The 2nds are in quite a low division and it may be in inappropriate for me to take a space there.
Sunday friendlies are all very well but I always end up batting 8/9 so a bit frustrating for me if I don't play Saturday's.
So. Any local club who wants a batsman on a Saturday let me know.
-
My season goals will be very similar as most seasons, to get at least 30 wickets. I've always tried to set myself this target as a young spinner its realistic but also a challenge. The one thing I'm worried about is our home pitch as well as many opposition teams that I played at last season were not very spin friendly especially at the start of the season. Even though I started in our 3s and 4s last season and played 2s at the end of the season I did play a lot at out many ground in Sunday games and in training so I found that the tracks were very flat and tbh an absolute road not offering much turn but this year I've really worked hard on playing in those sorts of conditions and bowling at our new 1st team player on Saturday was a really awesome challenge as he picked up length very well and had very quick hands.
This winter I've had some really awesome challenges as many of our 1s and 2s batsmen tried to play aggressively against the spinners and it made me have to think much more which I enjoyed as it was pushing to my limits and enabled me to get something different from my sessions.

Near Sussex, we are always looking for batsmen, we really struggle until mid June with the bat for some reason.

Season started today, great start. Game was called off Thursday night :(
Hope this isn't a sign of things to come...

Decided to give this year a miss after the influx of new players last year, which resulted in only being selected for a few league games. Was gutted to the point of depression with all the hard work, preparation and the way everything turned out.
This year has seen a 2nd team come into existence at our club for the first time with even more new players. Even though some of my old club mates continue to try and encourage me to play with them regularly in the 2nds I can't seem to get over what happened last year. I've missed all pre-season training and the 3 net practices so far. Considering 17-18 players went down last week to our one and only net it doesn't sound like a lot of batting practice for each player. It's a transition year for the club trying to create the feeling of 2 teams and one club but i'm not convinced... yet.
So, have decided to take a step back this year, which is really sad as I've been playing here for 6 or 7 years. Another club is not an option for me.
Unfortunately, our club is still led and heavily influenced by someone I predominantly blame for the way I was treated and how the club feels now i.e. win at all costs etc so it's difficult to rebuild trust. I went along today to see a mixed team of players from our club play a touring Actonian's (formerly Old Actonians) team from Middlesex and even though it was great to see some old team mates and see a bunch of new players in action, the feeling was not there. It was very cold here today which probably didn't help.
Convinced myself this may just be a year off and to go and watch a few of the club matches this year but it might just be it for me and possible retirement.
I guess the coming season for me will be a non event much like last year but will try to follow my old team mates in a few games and see how this pivotal year for the club will turn out.
Regardless guys, I think I'll be putting some bats and kit up for sale as hate seeing quality kit lying around and not being used.
Good luck to you all and your endeavours this coming season and hope the weather in blighty gets warmer and drier soon.
-
This season will be my first for nearly a decade having last played when I was about 14. An interclub friendly on Saturday was good fun, I had a bit of a bowl and a bat, picked up a wicket, a few runs and some nice grass stains diving around the outfield like an idiot.
Hopefully I'll pick up some match experience on Sundays and get a look in with the third team when people start disappearing off on their holidays and team selection gets desperate! I'm mainly looking forward to hopefully steadily improving at something throughout the summer instead of rotting away like I usually do waiting for the hockey season to start.
-
I'm really starting to regret some of my decisions playing this weekend. We did some intense training on Saturday on the outfield when a deflected ball caught me on the jaw area leaving a nice cut too. That didn't bother me too much however in the game on Sunday I decided to slide in the outfield a few times and as a result now both of my knees have deep grass burns which are more annoying than painful but oh well, what we do for the love of cricket
-
Based off the games so far, I'll score some runs but feel dog terrible at the crease...
-
I'm looking to just play my own game, for too long I've tried to play in a way unnatural for me, I'm an accumulator, so I need to tell myself this and focus on that when batting...
-
COLD!
-
Cold, wet & ultimately a disappointment I imagine!
-
expecting an interesting season, at least the start, 3rds and seconds were basically 'swapped' during the winter so the younger guys (who were thirds) are now making up the seconds.
i'm a lot older and I was one of 3 people on the committee to change things, and I played the last game of the season in the thirds,so that's where I will be from now on.
On last year's statistics anyway I don't deserve a place in any team higher so no complaints.
the facilities will be a big difference, top 2 teams place at home is very good conditions, threes and fours, well...it's park cricket basically, no showers, can't really get a beer anywhere.
on the plus side I've netted alright and back motivated to get runs for the season :)
-
My season looks to be as if it's going to be a struggle this year.
I hadn't played cricket at all except in the backyard until I joined in 2014, and I must say, that was by far my best season bowling and fielding wise. I would get 4-5 yorkers in consecutively and my fielding was excellent, however I rarely got to bowl as I was knew and our team were full of bowlers so got played as a batsman, where I had the joint record for most ducks! :) Broke my ankle near the end of that season and it's been niggling me since. Put on a bit of weight from then too so not as quick and as agile in the field.
2015 got a few chances to bowl, was a 2nd change bowler, was economical with 1-2 wickets per game. No ducks that season and achieved my highest score and hit a six! Fielding was atrocious catching wise, dropped so many! Still got my dives in at the boundary and close to the wicket.
2016 sees a lot of new guys at my club who are at a better level than myself, getting a game will be hard itself, especially considering how my bowling has deteriorated from what is seen in the nets where I used to be consistent. Batting against pace seems to have dipped but seem to be doing better against spinners? Odd. Fielding looks to be a bit better. Broke the amateurs bat in the nets which was a shame but felt good at the same time.
I hope it's a good one this year, and looking to get tips from you guys to improve my game!
PS. Much longer post than intended to be.
-
2 games in and 2 cancellations.dont you love the British weather...
As I've been told not to play football r a few weeks due to a broken thumb and damaged ligaments the earliest game I'll be able to play will be 4th June.
This season is going to be incredibly frustration.
-
Half baked and cold!! 2 cancellations so far but a good chance of getting 3 games in this weekend. Southern/Hants Leagues start next weekend and we need to get some proper match practice.
-
Season aims:
Manage the season without picking up an injury (feeling old at 24)
Get a fifer (not managed this for a few seasons)
Actually get a bat after only 8 innings in 26 games...
-
Cold, wet & ultimately a disappointment I imagine!
To elaborate on my previous thoughts -
Just been told I'm in the 1s tomorrow, we are 6 regular 1XI players down vs Saffron Walden who were relegated last year (We were promoted) so basically just lambs to the slaughter...
Also just found our the Mrs is pregnant and this is my last season for a few years so now determined to make the most of it.
-

Seems as if I'm dropped from the seconds team because I didn't pay my membership before the pre-season games due to the lack of funds.
Not a good start and not games yet
-
Waiting for my season to start, called off today. Sat watching the firsts whilst drinking cans, worse ways to spend a Saturday I suppose
-
Dissapointing! Had crap bowling to face, went to play it to 3rd man, ball rose a bit, caught 1st slip :-(

Sounds fair to me. I know on a personal level it's harsh but clubs should really all adopt that method really
-

100% agree. Too many people think they shouldn't have to pay. It's always the same guys who never turn up to help the groundsman or who always turn up late for the meet time.
-

I totally agree with this, but sadly I think we'd struggle to fill a side if we only selected people who had actually paid their membership at my club.
Makes me wonder why I bothered paying mine as the club seem happy to turn a blind eye. I can't even play yet due to injury, and nobody who's getting a game every week has bothered...
-
I think all teams should employ the "paid up members get selected first" policy.
If your struggling for a side etc, then sometimes turning a blind eye may seem okay. But if there are players blind refusing to pay but it's obvious they have money(usually as they show off how much the spent down town last night) then I think I'd rather play a few men down then pick those sorts.
Remember clubs need money to survive! Not all clubs have a silver spoon in there mouth.
If you genuinely can't pay(money issue/jobless/student/emergency reasons) then discussion with your club and I'm sure they will be willing to help out in someway(monthly payments, small deduction etc).
But if you've got no money because you've merely spent it all, well you don't have my sympathy as the club fees come round the same time every year. It doesn't take a genius to plan it into what you need to spend that month!
-
My old club was £72 for the year and this included the new seasons playing shirt with new season sponsor etc. You could either pay £72 in one go or if money was a bit tight a Standing order via your bank for £6 per month for 12 months or £12 per month for 6 months.
Maybe other clubs should consider as certainly increased the revenue into the club once they introduced this
-
Our club does a lot of fund raising throughout the year and has its own bar and stuff, so membership fees are £10 and so theres no excuses !!
-

Christ on a bike! I'm getting b*mmed!
Our club is £130 per year + £8 per game. Plus they are flogging ridiculously overpriced club gear to wear.
I am not buying club gear in protest, particularly as I know the club is on a really solid financial footing, also they booked at least 3 private lettings in the clubhouse on a Saturday night during the season, meaning paid up members largely having to drink outside.
Madness!!!
-
Yeesh Fattus, that's steep. Just to make you feel worse ours is 60 subs + 7 match fees, or 150 subs and no match fees (played over 30 games each season in both my seasons at the club so good value there).
-
My current club is no membership fee and £5 a game, we have a lovely ground, decent deck (no idea about financial position) but we have just ordered roll on covers and bought 10 Jnr lids and 5 senior lidsus new Jnr kit bag so can't be bad.
-
Turned up Tuesday and found out I was captain when the teamsheet was handed to me.
Had no clue what I was doing, but first 10 overs when we were bowling went well, but then the opposition finished on 154-4 in 20 overs after we lost our way due to misfields and dropped catches.
I finished on 0-17 in 3 overs.
Batting started off as a disaster, we were at 26-6 at one point, I came out to bat when we needed 20 runs to win in 9 balls. I came in at number 9 and scored 6, got out trying to hit big.
Lost the game by 13 runs in the end.
Ah...that game had it all
