Title: A late change of 2016 gear
Post by: Alvaro on April 24, 2016, 08:46:13 PM
This close season has been a strange one - my first child has been born and due to all the pre- and post-birth stuff, I haven't really been thinking about cricket. I even missed most of my indoor nets which NEVER happens. Anyway, in the middle of the night during bottle time, I noticed a club email about a new brand that had been set up by the father of one of my middle order compatriots. I sent him an email saying I would like to have a look and swing a few bats around next time I was in his neck of the woods.

So, that I did. First I went round to his place and he showed me a few RNS Larsons bats he got as samples. They were nice bats - particularly the UNIKs - and I must say I was tempted at this point to take a couple off his hands... Well, that was before we drove to his lock-up where he used to run a haulage company to find a large room filled with boxes of kit and about 60-odd non-Larsons bats. Now, this was forumite ambrosia. I started to look through the willow, all Indian made, but seemingly of very good quality and began to tap them up. A few were absolutely great and put aside, and then I moved to the softs, which are really great and bought a set at the club rate there and then. For what they are, they're a steal and really good build quality. After struggling with over large GM pads for two years, it was nice to wear something that fit me well. I actually needed a pair of gloves, as I usually neglect soft buying and the shiny pair of gloves I got from Shitmart fell apart after one game and one net. I have another set lined up, but require the baby to stop needing nappies first.

I also took one of the bats, it's 2.10, lovely balance, high spine and concaving, which I like as it helps pickup and good edges. After really being disappointed by a custom experience recently, I felt justified as I'd selected it myself. The stickers are basic, but clear, and will be refined for next year. All in all, a great time to spend an evening and I'm sorted even more so on the kit front. Knocking in the bat is a joy, it didn't need much oil, and boy does it respond...

So, finally, the photos:

Bats and softs look fantastic, big fan of the shape of the stick and the soft designs. Not bad stickers but as you say it's a start and will get better in the seasons to come. Sounds like great value to be fair, if having a child means finding great cricket deals, I may have to talk to my missus!!  ;)

Nice looking bat nice grainage Nice looking gloves and pads  wouldn't have gone with the name Batas  though a capital B.in blue would be a better .

I completely agree about the B on its own. Have already let him know my feedback on this.

Is it Bat-az, or Bat-ass, or something else completely?

Don't know. My conservative interpretation was just 'bat as'...

How much were the Larsons if you don't mind me asking? The prices on their Facebook page look exceptional value - £100 for a good looking stick.

Made by RS I'm guessing?

Certainly nothing wrong that, cracking quality (especially the softs!). I've only had 2 bats from Robinsons myself but they were both exceptional too.

i'd say it's an educated guess but I'm unable to confirm or deny.

@FattusCattus  Just been in the storage to look at the softs again. They are still in very good nick - the leather instep hasn't worn at all.  The protection in match situations was good too, I get rapped on the pats every now and then and rarely felt much.

The gloves are the real stars, though the pittards has rubbed a little on the bottom hand thumb. Nothing that will stop me wearing them for the next couple of years (hmmm, CBF addiction aside). Top spec, good durability, great price in the sale.

Knowing how much those gloves cost at trade prices, I'm amazed they're £30 - absolute bargain! The quality really is second to none.

I'll also add my favourite quote from the 'Raw Cricket' website:

"The bats and clothing range are very eye catching, simple and bold, like ABSOLUTELY nothing else on the market. "

They are clearly unique as the logos are different ; ) :) Have you had hands on the Pro style gloves?

I haven't held the Batas ones specifically, however having held blanks of the same design I would highly recommend them for 30 quid! :)

Not sure.
