Title: Handle Shapes
Post by: bk on April 29, 2016, 12:17:16 PM
What do you prefer? Oval or Round? Thick or Thin? I always prefer an oval handle with a single grip but wondered if there's any differences in the way they're made and their relative strength?

Relatively thin and round at the top and thick and oval at the bottom.

Do you do this with extra half grips or can a handle be made with varying thickness?

A bit of both, it depends on the bat, I usually buy off the shelf rather than custom so fiddle with the shape of the grip using tape and different thickness half grips.

Thin handle for me but it does nothing to assist pick up.
A couple of   Differences in the way handles are made certian handles are constructed to give more in the hitting area by adding titanium or carbon. Carbon not only makes the bat  feels lighter  it also helps generate more power into the shot   and assists with handle shock absorption.

For me handle shape is quite important. On the whole I prefer a thin handle, typically I find that the handles that one gets from most makers is too thick, even when a thin handle is requested. Further I like the handle to be pinched at the ears of the blade. As a result I tend take the bindings off, use a rasp to thin the handle at the ears, to make it more oval and pinched, then I use a firm medical tape to replace the bindings and support the glue within the handle. In terms of which I find best off the rack, definitely Gray Nicolls, and the Aussie ones tend to be thinner than the others as they use a much thinner binding.

Oval and thick and not built up by binding or extra grips.
