Title: Swanny up the order
Post by: 19reading87 on January 04, 2010, 09:29:55 PM
So people I have been having a little think...

Do you think he should be given a go at 8 or just let him continue at 9 getting more than useful runs...

I think keep him at 9, Broad is more consistent than him IMO

No. Broad is technically better and at eight he would have less freedom to play shots whereas at nine there are no expectations.

I'd keep Swann at 9 as he had been doing well there, Broad's being doing well enough at 8 so I don't think there is any need for change.

Broad 8, swann 9-it just appears stronger on paper for some reason!

Swann wants 8 as he told Flower he bats above Broad at county level.

Presumably most cricketers would like to bat higher up the order. Broad is clearly technically superior and has a better base to build on (he used to open until he was about 16). He's much younger so there's more time for him to progress with his batting so I think should be given more time to practise. The best place to do that is in the middle.

Swann has much more experience batting higher up the order, he opens (albeit in the shorter form) for his county, so I disagree with you saying Broad has a better base to build on. However it is important that neither should be heavily relied on as they should be in the side for their bowling, the batsmen should be scoring the runs...

I can understand both arguments!
Swanny is in better form with the bat in all formats at the moment!
But I think that Broad 'looks' more like a test batsman than Swan, assuming he can refind some of the promise and form he was showing a while ago!
But maybe play the batsman who is on better form? So that would be Swan at the moment!!

Either way they put them, they look a very strong 8/9 partnership!

He would be a better N/watchman than Jimmy

He plays too many shots for that.

He couldnt of done much worse than our timid top order today! It was only when Colly came in that we got some initiative!

Yeah, this. He's been saying it for ages. Think I might've first heard him mention it in an interview during the Tests against the WI in May.
