Title: independent review into the death of Phillip Hughes
Post by: well past my peak on May 11, 2016, 09:33:48 AM
The 62-page report found that there was limited scientific evidence that the current neck guards on helmets will prevent a similar tragedy, and need further evaluations before they are mandated.

The review, conducted by Melbourne-based barrister David Curtain QC, has also found the now mandated British Standard helmet would not have protected Hughes from the blow to the back of the neck that claimed his life in November 2014.

so if I read this correctly the new helmet design won't protect against a similar injury but the addition of a neck guard may help. Sounds like a "better safe than sorry" approach would be a wise move by players and parents.

This is the bit about neck guards - ""This device (neck guard) seems to be capable of being worn without unduly interfering with freedom of movement by a batter, but at the time of writing this report it has not been evaluated for efficacy or safety,"

Think you read it wrong, this is purely about the helmets not the neck guards? Says they need to test the neck guards to assess their efficacy.

Great idea from Brad Haddin - concussion subs.  Could and should be adopted across other sports.
