Needing some help unfortunately! Other than one good knock, I've been in horrific touch this year. I seem to be coming from outside the line of the ball and through it if it's on the stumps - if it's outside off I'm fine. It's never normally a problem, but this year I've been out bowled twice already!
Are there any things in someones technique that could cause / cure this? I know it's difficult without seeing any footage but (un)fortunately! there's none haha!
If anyone has any ideas please let me know - don't fancy being dropped!

New bat. There, I said it.
Without footage it's almost impossible, how's your footwork this season? It sounds like you're coming around your front pad?
-
I thought new bat as well... ;)
I know it's hard haha! My footwork has been pretty consistent in fairness. I think coming round my front pad could be the cause - as it sees me being bowled through a gate that shouldn't be there. It's like I'm getting there way too early and just giving up on the shot!
Could it be a thing of just waiting for the ball and being more positive?
I'll try get a net and video footage but it's difficult!

Check your grip is ok and your stance is not closed/too open would be where I would start, but without seeing a clip of your batting it is hard to judge.

May be very basic but this vid helped me out a fair bit this winter. Feel so much more comfortable, had changed my cricket grip to my golf grip without realising.

I'll give that a go - it may be I'm too closed off (especially as I was bowled by a Left-Arm Over on Saturday) - seems reasonable if I'm closed off, I'd have to play round my pad - creating a rather large gate to be bowled through! I'll have a check of the video as it seems to be only something I've started doing this winter! Really annoying as I used to be solid, only being removed by good bowling - now, twice in five innings, I've been bowled by a fairly normal delivery!
I'll give that a go - and if I can I'll get some video! But I struggle with pictures onto here, never mind a video :D

You can change anything you want but if you're not keeping to the basics it doesn't make a jot of difference, If your being bowled too often ask your self is the bat coming down straight??
-
A few possible reasons:
1. Wide hands.. instead of hands going back close to your body, your hands actually push out away from your hip. This creates many issues, one of which you seem to be facing. Another symptom of this fault is that your straight/on drives end up on the off side (sliced).
2. Head falling over to the off side, instead of going into the ball.
-
Do you have a trigger movement? If so stop it. Otherwise keep your eye on the ball and your form will soon return
-
Think I need a video / get someone to look don't I.
I'd say twice in 7 innings is too often for an opener. Shouldn't really be happening.
When you say wide hands I'm guessing you mean my hands being away from my body in my stance? Trigger movement - minor but has been the same for a couple of seasons and never caused trouble - gets my feet moving and I struggle more going back so it helps quite a bit I've found.
-
I found this helped me even though it does sound a bit random.... I used a pool cue or a broom handle and picked it up as a bat, I would then practice my normal drive straight down the ground with this (obviously not using a ball). Because the cue/broom handle is so much longer it exaggerates the angle that you are playing your shots at so you can see the angle it is coming down at. I found that what I thought was my straight drive was actually coming down at a big angle and hence the reason I was hitting (or not hitting) straight shots to leg (or playing all around a straight one).
You may also find that your head is falling away to the off side too much.
You could also need a new bat ;)

Your batting video will definitely help in providing a proper advice.

If you're worried about coming around your pad, and feel you're trying to fetch the ball and not waiting for it to come to you, I think ABDV's box theory is for you. Failing that, check Buzz's batting book stance video.

ABD's videos helped me a lot specially the grip part.

Simple tip is to brush your top hand glove against the top of your front pad doing this closes the gap between bat and pad ensuring you don't get bowled through the gate.
-
Have you tried taking a slightly different guard?
-
I've always batted off two or leg and will stick with that as my trigger works perfectly to get where I need to be - I'm happy with that part of my game.
I'm going to try opening my stance slightly, as before I have become closed off, (i.e front leg already further across to the offside than my back leg) - so this could be a cause.
I also think I've got a bit of a heavy head, but this could be a problem caused by having my front leg in the wrong place and then trying to play round it.
When I score 50/100 on Saturday, I'll dedicate it to everyone ;) - literally, you'll get the soppiest rant ever. Or it'll be dedicated to a fine forum sponsor when I purchase a new bat! Haha!

Or you could buy all the Forumites a new bat? Just a thought.

As much as I would love to, I can't even afford to get myself anything :(
-
Here's a thought; I've noticed it's only started happening this season; funnily enough after changing bat; I've gone from 2lb 9 to 2lb 14 / 3lb, so quite a jump.
Could it be a case of the bat being too heavy, as such through the downswing it gets the point that my bat is pulling my hands through as opposed to my hands being in control?
-
Crikey!
That's a big difference in dead weight
That's got to have an effect on your ability to get your hands through the shot etc.
I'm looking these days,(I'm old and knackered!ha) at lighter and lighter bats, currently down to 2.8
In my youth, I've used upto 3lb, which is fine for drives and things but, no good for cutting/pulling/flicks off my legs etc
-
Yeah just a bit of a difference - but got drawn in by some gorgeous grains and a light pick up. And the fact I'd always fancied a Kippax!
My best shot by far is a drive, but I also like playing square of the wicket early on - snicked behind off one of these, been bowled twice this season... a run out and got myself out! Not great! Thinking I'm gonna try borrow a mates bat for a net Sat morning, see if it helps when I back to back them.

I broke my collarbone last year and as I recovered I played a bit. In every game I was out playing a defensive shot to one on the stumps. For me, when my collarbone fused back, it went into a different position so my hands were away from my body by a different amount. Thus my straight bat swing was at a bit of an angle and the ball would get through between bat and pad.
Like you I was playing the drive fairly well - but getting out to the one I had already identified would be hitting the stumps.
Might be worth getting a mirror/mobile phone to look at your swing and check its straight? My simple fix was to stand up a bit straighter which brought my back hand closer in to my body and meant I was starting the swing in a better position to swing straight, throughout the shot.
-
Ouch - broken collar bones are never ideal!
I've tried shadow batting in a mirror, and it looked like everything was in line (this was whilst using a lighter bat) - might dig the 'Pax out and see if anything changes.
I'll keep you all posted - if the net on Saturday morning goes well with the lighter bat as opposed to a heavier bat.
