Title: took a bang to the toe
Post by: jwebber86 on May 26, 2016, 05:18:36 PM
had a quick net at lunchtime with the bowling machine. another advantage to work at a county ground. decided for the last couple of balls to set it to 99mph just for a bit of fun. first ball miles outside off stump and the second ball was a loving inswinging yorker straight onto my toe

Looks like you're gonna have to lose that toe mate. You'll be almost half way to Martin Guptill.

These original Bola machines are very dangerous at high speed; with a hard ball, any hit would result in an injury. The new Bola Junior uses smaller, softer balls and is very safe but goes only as high as 65 mph.

Are there softer balls available for regular Bola machine?

A bit like facing a fast bowler with a cricket ball then?

Not quite.

With a Bola machine you are practicing and it should be safe enough to get you to face an actual fast bowler in a match. If you keep getting injured in practice what is the point? Are you practicing injury prevention or playing cricket?

Depending on the level played, attitudes towards training can vary wildly

In a previous life as a goalkeeper at a football league club, we aimed to train at a level harder than actual matches. Some of the classic corny cliches do apply

Train insane or stay the same
Don't practice until you get it right, practice until you can't get it wrong

To the point of injury? That is not insane, that is stupid.

I did qualify it by stating it depends on the standard played, but injury is a genuine risk when pushing your limit during practice, this applies in all sports.

Bowling machines are alright if you do not go too overboard with them. Whilst seeming much simpler throwdowns are still an awesome way to go.

Also, not to forget that 80 mph with bowling machine is much tougher than facing a quickie at similar pace. Very unnatural feel too-  Doesn't get you in the best frame of mind or Rhythm - especially if you set it too fast and get hit.

Bola bowling machines are there for practice. It's quite simple. You pick a shot/area you need to work on and a decent speed for your standard and away you go.

But.

If you pick a guy that is a bell end on the feeder, who constantly changes line and length, speed, swing etc. And his only purpose is to get you out like it's a competition. Well then it can get dangerous.

You cannot in anyway pick variations from a static machine.

did the same last night against a human bowler. That's my weekend shot. Might wear my safety shoes in the net next week. My addidas bowling boots have great protection but no spikes in the net rule.

Wow...nasty . Hope it heals quickly .
Just recovering myself from an inswinging yorker to the big toe from a bowling machine . Ive been using a homemade 'toeguard' at the machines/games the last few weeks . Its just neoprene from an old wetsuit taped into a cylinder around my big toe . I copped a ball on the toe yesterday and the sponginess if the neoprene softened the blow . But jeez , would someone (stretton fox , moonwalkr , anyone ?!) please , please make a quality toe guard - inside shoe version / external /either/both , anything , im desperate.....four hits on the toe in the last 3 seasons (including broken big toe) , so id buy a stack of them !

Cricket world desperate desperately needs toe guards!!!!

i got off quite lightly with mine. the nail came off the other day but it only really bruised.

the biggest downside is that the boss wont let us use the bowling machines any more as we were being irresponsible with them

Wow , after that photo i would have thought there'd be more repercussions. ...but losing free bowling machine privileges - ouch !

natural risk of batting. bravo for pushing things to the limits.

I got whacked on the arm from a side arm last week - the feeder was so apologetic - my response - "Don't say sorry i should have hit it"

bowling machines are there to practice things. unfortunately at 99mph your injury risk increases.

pretty sure @StrettonFox Sports must be preparing something for this ;-)

It's been said a few times on here from stretton themselves.

Due to being approached by a manufacturer asking them to work with him, all products have been held back until the 2017 season.

new thigh pad sets, box, toe guard. Gloves and pads should be available next year.

Hi everyone, a quick update.

I've been restricted to what I can say at this stage but some information can be mentioned as it influences SS16. This is the first platform where this info is being mentioned.

Stretton Fox is currently in discussions with another cricket brand regarding collaborations of current and new technologies moving forward into 2017, the immediate result is all developments under Stretton Fox have been and are currently on hold until this is fully confirmed. I can't say who and any more details other than if everything goes well 2017 will see more kit innovation than I personally think has happened in over 30 years.

How this effects the current situation is 2016 will not see Stretton Fox soft goods.

The batting pad images were actually (I think most people guessed anyway!) a bit of a spoof to get people talking) there is an amount of truth in the technology as we are looking outside the box a bit, but the actual pads are very different. A few people have seen the real designs but otherwise this is, as the above on hold.

To the very patient and kind players who have kept in close touch waiting for a landing date I can only apologise. It does mean 2016 will not have all the stated kit, but honestly, if all goes to plan you'll forget that in about 2secs after seeing whats hopefully in store!

Feel free to drop me emails george@strettonfoxsports.com

Thanks again!
George
