He had left GM before the 2016 Ipl and I'm sure he didn't have a sponsor during the World Cup but I could be wrong about that, but why not make the most of the opportunity and as he will play the most lucrative competitions it's a great stage for SG to promote their products

I can't recall a major Aussie in recent times (ever ?) , being sponsored by one of the big Indian brands . But , if you think of it as him using a Kookaburra ( which are made by S.G) , then all of a sudden it seems usual again . Funny how branding works , huh ?

Okay, Dave  ;)

He did only start using SG towards the end of the tournament I think. Definitely saw him using blank kit early on.

Barring Spartan i think maybe Steve Waugh MRF could potentially be the last big player using an indian brand

How does sponsorship actually work?  Do the big companies just head-hunt specific players and throw all sorts of $$$ figures at them to get them to sign up with them?  Is it just all about the money, or do some players actually like the product they use and go with a certain company because of that?  I guess this would be called brand loyalty....given the nature of society these days probably a stupid question that I already know the answer to....

SS (biggest subcontinent sponsors) don't think much of the aussie markets- much smaller numbers and a lot of existing brand loyalty to Kookaburra & Gray Nics.

Instead they prefer UK- hence Moin, Bopara etc.

Basically its all about money now - players have agents who negotiate on their behalf. Purely money oriented.

Any special requests from the player -  they just buy the needed kit from other brands/factories to make the player happy and just put stickers on top. or reimburse player

Spartan is originally an Indian brand - one of the sons of the original owner has gone to Sydney and Concentrated more on the cricket side -  sponsored players etc.

Read an article in which Mr. Mahajan (BDM) talks about how his company had (and has) sponsored / nurtured talent in India by providing the kits for budding talent in India (including Virat and Sachin) and how when they became a household name, switched loyalties to other companies (MRF). This is same story in any sport - take any superstar and you will find a similar analogy - Messi, Ronaldo, Federrer or Bolt - they have all changed brands as they grew into their mega personalities. unfortunate but true.

yes. i remember thinking - why is such a prime real estate devoid of any stickers and viola - from the QF stages, the empty lot was replaced with SG stickers. :) He does have a cute baby now to feed. it's elementary Mr.watson :)

It's just another source of income for the players that are solely focusing on t20 cricket, the pay packet may already be enough but why not make the most out of companies throwing plenty of cash at you to put their stickers on your bats! It's a no brainer especially for the older players coming to the end of their careers

Unable to figure out what is wrong in it! Most professionals remain at the top only for a very short time. What is wrong in their trying to make as much money as possible?

Damn .. He was probably the only Aussie using GM gear ! SG is hunting for all the T20 marauders. Andre Russel was using SG for a while and now he has moved to Spartan.

Agreed. SS sales in subcontinent is probably 10 times higher than Australia. Given Kook is a home brand for Aus, there would be tremendous loyalty and its going to be a little difficult to compete with them. Kook certainly has more money and wider exposure than SS to gain access to aussie players.
