Hearing Surrey have exercised the right to speak to Stoneman and Borthwick at Durham, and it got me thinking players 'transferring' to other counties is becoming a bit more common (I'm only 22 so that statement may not be 100% true). Stoneman refused to speak to press after the game v Worcs despite being skipper, and Scotty understandably didn't want to talk about the subject. It upsets me slightly that the fella likely to be skipper next season and the fella who would be prime candidate to be vice, when not playing for England, could well be swayed by what most likely is going to be money.
Am I being a bit pathetic thinking that way, or is it genuinely a bad thing for county cricket.

Heard Essex have asked to speak to Varun Chopra (Warwickshire) and a certain Alex Hales as well as their contracts finish at the end of the summer with their counties... Why on earth would they think Hales would ever leave Notts, I mean really?!

It's an interesting point Scott.
Whilst I doubt we'd see the obscene amounts in transfers of football players (Doubt any county has £50M to throw about, some counties don't have 2 pennies to rub together) but it would be good for county academies if they were to profit from developing talent.
This seems to follow the IPL model of the team who pays the player the most, gets them, rather than paying a "fee" plus wages. But I think numbers up to £1M would be acceptable for a marquee signing.

It'll only be good for agents and players. Clubs will suffer and still the end of the day, fans will as costs will go up. Paying for players has advantages (smaller clubs can make money selling talent etc) so it does have some advantages.
IMO I wouldn't like to see 'transfers' like football but given the game is run for money now it'll happen as the rich clubs know it'll mean they can dominate.

Not really like football as the 2 are out of contract. County cricketers have a relatively short lifespan in the game aren't paid like footballers, if they move for money good luck to them. We all move jobs get promoted for money why shouldn't they?

As much as Borth is a Durham boy, could a move to Surrey also be partly for a career enhancement - he'll get much more opportunity to show off his bowling.
Perhaps if a clubs balance sheet is below a certain amount - some sort of a fee should be paid to them by the purchaser to help them recruit someone else?

I agree about Borthwick possibly being a career enhancement, but I'm sure he said somewhere before when the subject arose that he's enjoying his batting up here and didn't mention bowling once so I'm not sure how important that is to him anymore. Add to that the fact that I suspect he would be a candidate for vice captaincy next season which in itself could be classed as a career enhancement. I will admit even as a Durham lad myself if I was in their position Surrey would tempt me, Notts were also linked and that would annoy me but deep down Surrey I could half understand.
I definitely think there still needs to be some sort of fee. It's no secret we are as good as skint up here so losing our top boys for nothing could just drop us further in the brown sticky stuff, although it would probably be financially better than England picking them!!

I think as the England selection has become more prevalent, he has mentioned his bowling and his desire to bowl more and more frequently.
I would love to see both stay at Durham, however there is just a hint in my mind that if he could bowl 10-12 effective overs a day, with subcontinental tours coming up, he might be a bit of a superstar.

If a player gets a central contract I believe the team they developed through (assuming that isn't the one the currently play for) get part of the money. Believe this had something to do with Northants money troubles as they had a chunk of cash for a while due to swann and panesar's central contracts

As long as it doesn't turn into the Premier League then its okay.
We don't want the Man City and Chelsea's of the County Championships who can offer big wages e.t.c and all the big players end up at said teams.
The beauty of the County Championship is that the talent is spread around, yes there are some teams with more talents than others. But I believe there is a good balance across the leagues.
I think players should only move clubs to increase their opportunities to play (Buttler for example).

Both batsmen thinking about leaving a nightmare batting pitch to go play on a road every other week? What seems odd about that?
