I recently purchased an antique spokeshave from ebay, I originally hoped it would work despite the worn front and just needed some TLC. Once it arrived it was apparent it needed a serious refurbishment or binning.
It wasn't as hard as I anticipated once I'd planned out the problems I could encounter but it was a challenging and enjoyable project.
It however cuts beautifully now and I'm quite proud of it as it's was all done by hand, no machines.

Have you changed the blade?
-
Super job.
-
Same blade as the original, had some pitting and rust but just needed cleaning up. I needed fewer tools than I'd originally anticipated which was a pleasant surprise.
-
Nice work.
Wood looks excellent now.
-
Yes it looks very very good after that refurb!
-
Thought I'd add these two to this as well. I've started making wooden planes and here are two I've done so far. First one is a small 45º smoothing plane in Eucalyptus wood and the second is a 50º plane in Black Walnut.

nice job

beachcricket,
Where do you get your blades from? Just broken a plane blade half way up after knocking if off my bench. looking for a replacement.
-
Ebay is easily the best place, g and m tools do some nice blades as well for old tools or wooden planes.
-
thanks for the info
-
Of all the things I've seen refurbed on cricket forums I've never seen a spokeshave refurb
1 - 0 to Beachcricket you my friend are the winner and cricket forum pioneer

I have 4 spokeshaves here in need of refurbing if anyone wants to try it. Have refurbed one already. Brought 6 as a package and had to throw out one

David Finck's book is a great purchase if you fancy having a go. The best price for it was directly from his website and he also sells plane blades as well.

Having finally got my dissertation out the way, I've been able to use some black walnut I had lying around from my plane and a block of maple. Sadly the maple had a crack in it so I had to use it for something else.
I was due to be buying some clefts from Gary now, but my guitar amp suffered a disastrous failure and £113 bill left me having to delay that a few weeks.
Anyway here's the knocking in mallet I made from part of the figured maple block and some laminated slices of black walnut. Hope you guys like it.

you. are. an. artist.
this looks tremendous!
-
pimp daddy!
-
Thanks, it's getting another coat of wax today. I thought about putting some kind of satin finish lacquer/sealer on it but I'm not really too sure what would be suitable. Anyone got any suggestions?
-
That looks great!
-
Very pretty, you might want a bit more curvature on the face before anyone actually uses it though.
-
That looks amazing ! Wish I was so skilled :P
-
Made this bat width gauge over the past 2 days. Flamed Maple and Ebony fit nicely together and it compliments the Maple and Black Walnut mallet I made last year. Hope you guys like.

skills to pay the bills pal!
you should be a custom tool maker lol
-
Bat width gauge and the mallet are pieces of art mate!
-
Nice job fella. Whats the deal with the different shades of timber on the shave? Did you have to scarf a new bit on? Planes look tasy as well. I'm thinking of making my own concaving plane like Fletch has on the other thread now.
-
I had to attach a piece of ebony to the front of the spokeshave as the mouth was so open and worn it didn't function correctly.
-
Kudos, very nice work...on both of them, if i made something like that it would proudly sit on the mantle in my living room for all to see
-
Very impressive! Loving the planes and bat mallet...some serious time and skill there.
