Title: My net video of edges, misses, hits on the body......
Post by: BD on August 08, 2016, 10:41:50 AM
Here's a not to painful 3min 'highlights/lowlights' video of a net session me and a mate did a couple of weeks ago.  I was facing my Paceman Pro bowling machine on full bore, the first few buckets of balls angled to dig in at a shortish-awkward length on off stump & swing away.  The very first ball on this vid was a ripper!!

I have found taping my nets quite educational.  As everyone will be able to see (even though I have set myself up expecting short deliveries) I'm jumping all round on the crease and waving my bat out there, asking for an edge.  Having watched these vids and seeing exactly what I'm doing I'm now able to try and correct this by making a conscious effort to keep my feet on the ground and move back and across the stumps and get behind the ball more.

Any other pointers, fire away!!

You're jumping into the line of the ball (or towards it and waiting your bat outside off stump).
As a coach once told me about the short ball "if it's not going to hit youit's,  best you don't move into the way of it".

I've always been taught to get in behind it - it's easy to sway out of the way or play from this position. But, if you're not comfortable playing the short ball, look to leave early - that way the bowler will then look into bowling fuller again. Practice makes perfect :D

entertaining watch... it looks like you had fun, it certainly looks like a great set up to have a net.

Watching you at the beginning i was wondering how much of your first movement is an anticipation of whats coming... i.e you are squaring up your stance (back and across) in anticipation you are going to pull / hook the ball. I found i was doing this when i wanted to practice some specific shots... the variation in the delivery from the machine would mean i was not only early on the position (anticipating the delivery) but then getting caught out by the ball doing something different.

I'm not coach though, so i just enjoyed watch your reactions. Great stuff.

just watching this and how many balls you played at that were well outside off or high enough to sway, im no expert and shocking at playing the short ball but id say a lot of these are avoidable and can be left alone, instead of jumping into line a simple back and across trigger will allow you to know where your off stump is then leave/cut accordingly or pull/defend/work off hip accordingly, i keep telling myself that with short bowling i have 3 options, leave/duck/sway, cut or pull/work off hip if it going to hit me then its defend pull or work, if its wide enough to throw my hands at and not get myself in too much trouble go for it, if im unsure then leave but the key is to watch the ball and not over anticipate even if you know where its going to be like in this case, which i get is tricky

Thanks for the input!  I'll take the comments on board and try and start focusing alot more on where exactly my off stump is and make a concerted effort to start leaving anything that hovering around in that corridor and doesn't need to be played.

You look as if you had great fun and were also petrified of what was coming!
Well done for challenging yourself.

You get squared up a fair chunk of the time, staying side on (look as how your feet frequently end up facing the bowler rather than your back foot pointing to point.)

From side one you are less if a target, can sway out of the way better and play the short pull better.

As commented above there are a few times where you pre meditate the short ball and the ball is one you should move forward too.

Still any net session where you grin and laugh as much as that must be the way to go.

What did you use to record it?

What did you use to record it?

GoPro on narrow mode and taped to a step ladder. My mate is right handed so when he bats we just move the ladder over to the other side of the net.  Also mount the camera on top of the wickets (although it got smashed off there the other day.... Still works fine) and also on the roof beam, about 3/4 way down the pitch looking back toward the batsman.

I'm not sure what you learnt from this, but it looks like you had a great time trying to figure it out!  :D

Great set up, I reckon Astro on concrete will replicate the rock hard wickets you'll get in Oz. Looks like you had the machine set up for Brett Lee bouncers at Perth!

Personally I look to get in line or inside the line depending on the line of the ball. Still, if you're not looking to play it just walk away to square leg and watch it go by

I'm Getting used to holding a bat and facing balls again, as I've just got back into the game after a long, long break.  One thing I don't want to do is face half volleys all day long on the machine. I like to set up nets to get me outside my comfort zone and have fun the same time.  Growing up and playing in NZ on low slow wickets will be a little different to the dry hard Aussie tracks I'll be playing on this time around.

I wouldn't be too harsh on yourself mate, that was a ridiculously good spell of bowling...

well if your goal from that session is just to have fun than you achieved.
however if you are trying to improve your technique I would suggest that this is far from ideal, in fact pretty good way to do more damage to ones tech. and confidence.

I would work on being more balance at set up and again at ball contact.
Great to see you enjoying yourself

It's funny because it's not until you film and watch yourself batting do you realise what you are doing.  It's a great leveller and honesty tool!

Youve got guts so you're half way there . Apart from what's stated above , id concentrate on only going back and across as far as needed to cover off peg . Try not to jump unless you have to ride a real lifter . Only defend what's coming at your body. Defend late/under your nose , using soft hands . Leave what will miss you . Cut what's really wide . But main things would be to jump less and focus on a still head at point of impact .
Btw , i like your attitude towards bowling machines....really test yourself and then by comparison the bowlers you face in games won't seem so difficult.
And what i would give for personal training facilities like that ! Awesome!
Oh ... just thought - have a look at a.b.devilliers youtube vids where he talks about playing compact and playing 'inside the box' . Its a good mental tip to remind/gauge whether you're reaching for balls and playing unnecessarily .
