Title: cricket practice all year round-are you mad?
Post by: ppccopener on August 10, 2016, 08:28:50 AM

guys really just wondering do any of you on the forum actually net all year round?  not like every week but regularly during the closed season?

And if so, do you think it's worth it......

 :)

Mate, here in Brisbane, we play all year! Winter cricket is the best time to play, for sure! We practice every week but might miss a couple of weeks in between seasons as i find, at my age (47), i need to keep it up or lose touch completely. I dont know about net practice without having a game to work towards: it would make keeping focus and intensity a bit tough...

I would if I could. I love netting me, perhaps more than playing!

I  get the yips when I  play. In a net I can just run up and bowl and have a laugh with my chums.

I would net all year round.

We start winter nets beginning of October and net until the start of the season on a weekly basis. I am not sure unless the net is done in a goal oriented way if play improves to any great degree, rather it's a long time between seasons and keeps the body used to the particular stresses and strains of cricket.

We have a few months off (September-December) then net indoors from January until the weather is good enough we can start training outside.

I love netting though, so would happily do so all year round, especially regular CBF nets during the off season (hint, hint)  ;)

Typically people want to enjoy the net rather than being too goal or technique oriented.

This past off season was the first time me and a few of my friends netted regularly through the winter (3 times a month approx.) up until Club nets started where we continued our own nets as well as the club ones. I really enjoyed it however I am yet to determine its usefulness as I dislocated my knee in the first game of the season!

Only recently started playing again as im not 100% fit at the moment and ive scored 47 (On Tour) and 39* so not a bad comeback!

When the season is over i try to get up to Uzi Sports Birmingham Nets every other week and have a net with Farukh (if anyone is looking for a batting coach, hes fantastic)

Yep, tend to finish for 2 weeks in September then kick off with both indoor league and some Saturday morning nets.

I'd say it's worth it, first few weeks of ijn ndoor nets while everyone's still trying to figure out the gear, the ones netting all winter are already in the mood and ready to.?

When summer finishes in March i have a couple weeks off , then back to bowling machines and oudoor nets . Then winter season starts mid April . I train 1-2 times per week through winter and play every Saturday.  I find at summer preseason trials you can tell the people who've done similar vs the people who've not played/trained through winter . I feel like I'm at an advantage to some for the first couple rounds of summer . Definitely worth it , plus you can set yourself goals and really focus on aspects of your game . Lastly,  at my age I reckon I'm better off never really stopping out of fear that i may never restart or be so behind the eight ball .

well....I wanted to find out how others on the forum did it....and whether it was beneficial.

Likewise i'm personally looking at practicing from October all thru till April for the first time ever. Hitting the half-century next month and looking at longer practice just to keep up with the others...

gut feeling is yes it's going to work and cannot do any harm.. :)

You get a better class of sledging in the nets as well - teas could do with a bit of work though  ;)

I would play cricket every day if it was available!

There used to be an Indoor Cricket League, but that was cancelled through lack of interest!  :( :(

I remember back when I was young(and less injury prone) I used to net everyday during the cricket season, even before matches, was epic. But as you get older the body gets as stiff as a plank and one net session turns out to be quite painful

Don't net play indoor cricket including national indoor knockout.

I used to hate indoor cricket with a passion! The idea of spending my Sunday night in a cramped sports hall with a bloke swinging like a rusty gate stood about 5 yards away from me wasn't my idea of fun.

I played at the Ageas Bowl last winter which was much better, side walls big enough to play tip and run and not fear for your life while fielding. I like indoor cricket, but only if the venue is a decent size, so it feels more like a game of "proper" cricket.

All that said, I still prefer a good indoor net session  :)

few of the CBF netters were hanging off the walls in the last session to be fair. I was so stiff I struggled to drive home without going straight into a field

Where I live the winter is brutal and lasts long - With no indoor cricket facility we improvise and play in baseball tunnels to get ready for start of season in Spring. We even use the baseball pitching machines - I think they have the same dimpled balls...and are hurled at you at an awkward angle (just despise this) The bounce is spongy and uneven on the astro turf like surface in these tunnels. This goes on between Jan - Apr intermittently until conditions improve outdoors - not fun at all. For the rest of cricket season May - Oct it is matting wicket practice - full simulated game-like where each batter gets a limited # of deliveries weekly that I love (no nets)

Overall never loved nets and never will.

i suppose it's similar to the driving range with golf
I used to love an hour of trying to kill the bloke collecting the balls on his quad bike, with my old one iron!ha

It's a good crack netting with like minded souls, no egos and a shared love of willow
Totally different to most league cricket these days, the poor umpiring and stupid sledging/abuse are probably killing the game for me.
This is probably my last year of playing league cricket
I'll go back to just Sunday friendly stuff etc and the nets with the cbf boys

In 2009 when I was at uni I netted throughout the winter with the uni cricket team and that summer I had the best season I had ever had scoring my first two fifties and ending the season with an average of 20 something. I'm pretty sure netting throughout the winter and me having my best season with the bat weren't just coincidence.

Same as Bruce personally. Absolutely love netting and I'm not really fussed over actually playing a game. I net all year round as I'm still learning how to bat and so need the sessions. Plus it's enjoyable so why not

I try and tempt my club mates to net all year round! If we don't win the league every year, then we're not good enough so need the practice - right?! :D

Although I try and have a bit more coaching work on technique through the winter - then the summer is more aimed at keeping in form (which hasn't worked, with scores of 55*, 64, 8, 20, 11, 4) I'm on a bad run!

I usually get a little group of guys (standard from 1xi to 3xi but that doesn't matter really) together most Sunday's from November until April and we just have a good net and a bit of a social. Everyone just enjoys it and uses it to put into practice things they are working on, so we don't get any slogging etc as no one enjoys people just smashing it as its a road indoors

In fact, seeing as I have taken a little break from playing, I'm up for a net every month between now and next season for any of you South East boys. Frankly it's the only chance I get to bat!

I net with a bowling machine for batting and a separate one for keeping through the season. I stop in September and start around Christmas time and do it weekly from then. I play hockey in the winter so I keep my eye in. I find physically I need a break and also I like to miss playing cricket before I go back. I didn't play properly until I was 28 so I felt I needed to catch up so netting a lot seemed to be the best way. I also bat against a friend about 5 times on a weekly basis before the season starts.

I think it has really helped me groove shots and learn a good technique for both disciplines. I feel I need to do work with an actual bowler otherwise I am not practicing picking up length which is arguably the most important thing. Over the last few seasons I feel like very few bowlers can get me out, I have to do something daft. I'm lucky to have found a good coach who won't let me try to smash 6s and mess about, just learn a style that will help me score runs.

I can't see how netting all year would be detrimental if you are doing the right things unless you started getting mentally tired with it.

Always net as much as I can personally! My cricket improved hugely through 4 years of netting constantly through university, the more the better I think until batting becomes almost subconscious. Spent a few months at one point where every week I had 3 nets and 2 indoor games, would do that all year round if I could!

Ha, being a single student had some great plus sides! As much as there's other things I wouldn't trade, do wish I still had the spare time to put that much in to my cricket now.

Do enjoy indoor cricket but agree it's not the same, nice to keep the competitive juices flowing over the winter though. Seems to be dropping a little from being hugely popular in Bristol a couple of winters back.
