Title: New Video implementing some recommendations by you guys!
Post by: BD on August 17, 2016, 11:34:26 AM
I posted a video a few weeks back of me batting against short pitched deliveries and it wasn't until I saw that I was jumping about on the crease and getting a number of edges toward the keeper/slip region.  Suggestions were put fourth and along with keeping my feet grounded and getting in behind the ball more + making more effort to leave balls that don't need to be played.   This is a very short heavily edited 2 minute video, with the bowling machine set up @ 15 metres away firing fast/short deliveries at me.  The vid is not that exciting as alot of deliveries I duck under but that was one of the goals I was trying to achieve, rather than feeling like I need to play @ every ball.  It does get a little more interesting near the end when I get one that gets in the gap of the helmet/grill & into my eye.  All part of facing short pitched bowling!!!!  The last ball was a ripper as well - short and straight ..... tried to leave it but it rose & got my glove on the way through.

I shouldn't laugh, but 1:03 is brilliant haha

One suggestion I'd make is to drop your hands when you're leaving the ball, rather than raising the bat (saves any opportunity for accidental edges etc)

Definitely you need to get better at dropping your hands and getting the bat out of the way when avoiding the short ball.

Also your shoulders are very open in your stance, I think you might benefit from having your shoulders a bit straighter on to the bowling. It will help your alignment enormously

Just to clarify, do you mean I should be only showing my right shoulder @ the bowler, rather being open showing both shoulders/chest - as what it looks as though I am currently doing? - i.e.: Therefore move my right foot straighter which will in turn bring my entire body straighter?

I think you could do with a new set of kit, something like full body armour, special for your short ball practice!  ;)

Your summary is pretty spot on . You're not so jumpy . Ducking is good , except try not to 'periscope' the bat above your head . Practice swaying more whilst dropping your hands too .
I personally think your stance , open as it is , is fine for right arm over the wicket bowlers , but I'd close it off /straighten it a bit to left arm over /right arm around the wicket bowlers .
I guess you could easily justify some new gear purchases ....helmet , body armour etc (like formumites need an excuse ! ).
And I was right last time....you're gutsy (and you must have a hard head ) . I like your work ethic , keep at mate .

Actually I would be thinking your hips and shoulders, your feet are ok.

@BD Since you are starting after a long break, I would first start getting the basics right - foot movement, getting in line of the ball,  hand eye coordination etc. etc.
Playing short pitch bowling so soon will not help much and you might get hurt.
I think lot of whats happening in the video can be avoided by just getting the basics right first.

One thing I would try to work on is keeping your hands in tight with your body. Not just specific to the short ball, but your trigger movement of throwing your hands out will get you into trouble.
