I'm guessing the omission of Alex Hales from the Test Squad Central Contracts suggests there's going to be a vacancy for an opener after the Bangladesh series..?

I think it means that he had the spot, decided to give it up and now someone else could take the chance.

I'd imagine this was decided before the touring party decisions though.

Hales had 3 series as opener, 2 stinkers and an average booster against the Sri Lankans in the middle.

If he'd taken 1 (or even all 3) of the gimme hundreds in that series it could have been different, but I have a feeling he had been told he'd lost his Test place before the squad for Bangladesh was announced, which is why he decided not to tour.

Didnt take his chance which was a shame, needed runs in both home series for me.

I think there could be a place in the middle order for him if he gets runs for notts early season.

With hameed, jennings and a few others making runs at the top of the order id say he was 4/5 in line anyway
