Title: Your greatest bargain
Post by: 19reading87 on October 20, 2016, 09:45:20 AM
So, all of us love a bargain, don't we?!

What has been the greatest thing you have ever got for a bargain price? Can be any form of equipment. A bat handed down which got you a ton? A pair of pads that cost £10 which have lasted you 15 years...

We all chop and change on this forum so would be good to see what's been special to you

A GM Purist I rescued from a skip!

Got my first 50 with it. It was a 303, but the polycoat was removed and I've refurbed it a few times (the spine is now rounded rather thana triangle!)

Not used any more but still in my possession to this day

I had two Hunts County reflex bats that cost £75. This is going back about 10 years or so but even then the price was an absolute bargain. I also got an MRF bat from Romida in a sale that cost £50 and went like a train.

A mis priced GM Halo 909 for £30 from Amazon a few years back. The bat went well until it broke a couple of years back.

My greatest bargain was a bargain that led to me getting one of the greatest bats ever!
I remember it was an Adidas Incurza Elite weighing 2'8/9 which someone wanted rid of on this forum a few years ago.
It was barely used and from memory the seller wanted around £80/90 which was good price for the top of the range Adidas.
I purchased it as the grains were ruler straight (around 11+ grains I seem to remember) and a fantastically light pickup. Used it in the nets and it felt a little hard!
But after several nets it suddenly went from feeling hard to the occasional ball flying! I used it for a couple more nets and it was starting to seriously ping! The bat didn't have big edges but a couple more weeks of netting and it was pinging like a canon - it had no right to do that considering how light and slim the bat was!!

Anyway, I was netting at Dummer and one of the guys who coached there sometimes and used to coach in Aus for a while was netting in the next net and coaching his son (who was around 13 at the time, maybe a little younger)
His son had a bit of a plank by the sounds of it. He wasn't getting the ball away easily and was complaining a little about it. As I knew his dad (Keith) quite well I asked if he wanted to borrow a light bat (so that he had no excuse for not getting the ball away!) and his son was eager, so I handed him the Adidas.
To be fair the ball was flying after that! And the son was blasting the balls everywhere extremely hard. I noticed him talking to his dad obviously discussing the bat. So he came to me and asked if I wanted to sell the Adidas - it was too light for me so it didn't bother me. He offered me more that I paid for it but I knew his son was desperate so I pondered.
Then he asked if I was interested in a swap and I replied that I could be for the right swap - I remembered that Keith had spent time in Aus and had brushed shoulders with the likes of Adam Gilchrist and Co.....so I was quite curious. So Keith nipped off and was back later with Adam Gilchist's match bat which was hand-signed too. He even showed me the photos of Adam handing the bat to him, so I obviously didn't doubt the authenticity of it!!! Those who have seen it will confirm that it is a stonkingly gorgeous Puma bat! So in essence that AG match bat (direct out of his kit bad) cost me £90 which I reckon is a pretty decent bargain!

Mine was probably the scatt I bought with the laver it cost me just over 300 pounds but for a brand new scatt that belonged to Alan Donald it was a great price to pay I very much doubt that there is another scatt around that is in the condition of this one .the other bargain was the kookaburra bubble star on sd for 12 pounds under the bleach was some lovely grains with a nice butterfly stain

To make it better, possibly post the price of what your item cost? Anything morebhan £100 isn't really a bargain for this topic...

Biggest bargain, was a GN 500 or something
Paid 20 quid from a lad who said it was too heavy for him,(I think it's about 2.7!)
I scored 96not out first time I used it, and hit the ball harder and further than I've done with any other bat.
I still have it,(must be 27yrs old now) and it still pings from every inch
You can't get willow like that anymore

My 100 quid grade two ace runs it a close second

A brand new Slazenger SX elite pro that I got off eBay for £21. Pinged like mad before I even knocked it in, went back and bought the other 7 for £18 each and sold them on for a profit. Scored my first and only ton so far with the one I had.

I very recently picked up an unused pair of B&S Graeme Pollock 274 pads in Small Men's. Got them from eBay, probably from someone on here for £45, which although not amazingly cheap is still £20 less than they retail for, and I understand they are very rare and even more so in SM.

I'm considering not even using them, put them on when they arrived and they are the most comfy pads i have ever worn, and the straps are the right length which is a bonus, and a surprise.

A fair few years ago when I was a junior, my club captain made the transition from SH to LH and flogged off a load of his old stuff. I remember getting a scat off him for £50. Was also a paradigm shift for me as I previously was a slave to whatever brand my then-favourite players had their bats stickered up as.
