Title: Big edges, spine that's Huge, Concave, convex, which one you'd choose?
Post by: petehosk on October 22, 2016, 06:16:06 PM
I have just been watching some reviews on some rather large bats.
I noticed that Gray Nicolls in particular seem to have covered a number of bases! They did have the rather generously curved Kaboom. But this year have the 50+ with a truly massive profile, 50mm edges and very little concaving all in a package weighing less than 3lb. But to cover people that prefer a huge middle there is also the XP80 with its smaller edges and ridiculously high spine, and even a slightly smaller spine model of 70mm as well, just in case an 80mm spine is too extreme!
It is an exciting time with any profile possible - the only restriction these days seems to be the weight you use.

There are a few members on the forum who wield 3lb bats that can choose most profiles as they are not limited to weight (lucky chaps!!)

And I got to thinking that most people on this forum are limited to which profile they use by the weight they finish at.
We also know that genuinely mega-light density clefts are as rare as hen's teeth these days otherwise we would all probably have a couple!!

But if you could get genuinely light clefts - and I am talking about 50mm edges on a 2'8 bat for example - then which characteristics would you go for?

Would you go for edges? Spine size? Spine into toe? huge toe/shoulders? concaving? etc?

I personally would go for a Warner profile in say 2.10 with 50 mm edges would be a serious low density cleft 😉

If somebody could make a bigger, very similar profiled Purist with similar convex middle size and balance but just a big bat around 2'9-2'10 that would be amazing!

I will go for highest spine possible like XP80, no concaving,  small edges which means i want more meat in toe,  dont like thin toes ;)

Full profile,convex,
35mm toe and edges
Nice big 70mm spine scooped out 20mm deep ,(one scoop for me please)just for balance
Leave as much meat in the hitting area as possible
2.9 with grip and 'painted' scoop
I'll take three, because it's gonna have to be that dry it's not gonna last long

Warner replica shape by GN sacrifices nothing. I'd go for that in 2-11+ finished (mine 2-13+ - so just an ounce lighter) with a second grip, it will be 2-12+ which is perfect for me.  :)

XP80 at that weight? Amazing. Is this somehow/someway possibly available to us ordinary folk?

Anything is possible with a great bat maker and the right willow I guess

A c.a 15000 shape but with 50mm edges and 70mm spine at 2lb7-8
Or an xp80 at 2lb7-8
A warner profile kaboom at 2lb7-8
I really like the look of the b and s black edition too ... maybe one of them at 2lb7-8 on steroids - 40odd mm edges , 70mm spine .
It's all such fantasy though , unless i grab a balsa wood cleft and do my own shaping , im in with no chance .

That is the scuff sheet although it does have 11 ruler straight grains

I would want
even edge throughout the blade maybe a 5mm drop to shoulders and 10 to toe.
spine not massive around 60-65mm but rounded convex and billed at the bottom
edge would need to be around 35=38mm
super small blade weight around 2-11 but pick up much, much better.

I am just interested in something that picks up well and hits the ball hard.

I like an English willow, around 3lbs 9, picks up around 2lbs 13 and puts fear into the bowler  ;)

For me it's a bat with no concaving that's around 2lb 8ozs-2lb 10ozs. I've never been too fussed about spine height or massive edges. I used to like Newbery Mjolnir's and they had very small traditional edges.

Something full and meaty like a butcher's sausage
