Title: Myself Batting
Post by: Batbuddy99 on October 25, 2016, 10:18:39 AM
Recently, as you all probably know, a bunch of us went to Eversley for a net
I decided to bring a camera along, and filmed the latter section of my first bat
Here is the evidence:

https://youtu.be/Ci6uivIFeFg

Any comments about my technique are appreciated, and I'm already expecting to be sledged about my use of a trigger movement!
I also apologize for the dodgy editing, i havent done one of these before

Ah mate
Lovely hand speed through the ball!!!!
It someone pulls that batting apart they need to get a life
You've got a good eye and you give it a good smack
Not a bad start for your cricket career

And the ball landing on your head is pure comic genius

Looks like you're hitting them well mate. You and I have very similar trigger movements in that our front foot moves so our toes move towards the bowler. Be careful not to move it too late as I found my foot gets stuck/I run out of time to get my front foot into the right position. You looked like you had the weight on the ball of your foot though which will help for you to move.

Quality hitting though mate, great tactical and comical use of the top edge!

I came charging in to send down some floaty medium pace! I must have been bowling at nearly the same pace as a test match spinner... :-[

You asked for a comment and having looked at your vid, I'd picked up that you become open chested on your trigger movement causing your left shoulder to point to mid wicket and your right shoulder to come through. Your in a great position for the ball coming in, I'm guessing you may be caught on the covers or behind mostly. If you wanted to straighten up, lead with your left shoulder into the ball.

Thanks, interesting, I'll bear that in mind in future
I hadn't thought about that befire

A simple drill is to put 3 balls down at drivable lengths for on, straight and off drives and practise leading with your head and shoulder into driving each  ball.

that's a really good drill that one. It also helps you work out any problems with your grip.

Not picking ok anyone... But compare your self to @WalkingWicket37 you have a good stance, balance, still head! You have a trigger movement before the bank is bowled. Appears to work! Like trott! Would advise working ok your lunges, so you can get forward a bit  more and play under your eyes.

Least you didn't vid your bowling  ;) have a list of things to correct it! Seam up that is!

2:37, you got found out  - slow short ball right into your body.

You trigger forward and put your weight on front. I wonder if you'd be able to rock back to a quick short ball aimed at your rib cage; with your current body alignment, I'd say you'd top edge such a delivery. To any delivery bowled outside the (off-stump) channel, your option is either play a square-drive or slice it to backward-point or third-man. And, that works only if you have a great hand-eye coordination.

I don't know how you bat in a real match situation. If this kind of trigger works for you, then you should continue using it. There are other options as well. :) The reason I say this is because I used to bat like that many moons ago. I have stigmatism in my left eye and did have problems seeing the balls side-on. With practice and better Rx for contacts, I am little better now and bat side-on. My two cents. :)

You have decent hands I will give you that and your what I call a hands player you don't really play with your body at all.

Agree with above points away swing or short pitched but you have lots of positives too.

Work on shoulder head alignment if you know what I mean. Head towards the ball as a pivot.

However if what your doing is working stick at what your doing.

I think there is a lot to like,  good bat speed and some nice shots. Not sold on the trigger but if it works then great. Echo other comments that a few short balls might give you issues. My main concern would be you look late on some balls coming on and the bat comes down crooked. I imagine some good balls coming back at you could cause issues. Some closing off of the face hint at this. Just work on you backlift coming down straight,  but looking good overall.

So with the next Southern net being tomorrow, i finally got round to editing the footage from the last one.

https://youtu.be/gPYwLpv-6yo

As last time, any constructive feedback is useful  :D Reading back on the previous comments I read that people would be interested to see how i fared against some short bowling and some away swing - both of which can be seen in here!
Also probably worthy of note was this was the first time i picked up a bat since the previous video, so I didn't have much time to implement the previous advise, but I tried a bit.

There's a guy in that vid who seem a typical net bowler.

Everything is halfway down track. Except one that bowls you. He doesn't seem to learn as he goes back to banging it in short
Love them guys.

I enjoyed your batting though.

Would only say you set yourself too early and rely on your arms to generate bat speed.

Enjoyed that.

Most shots well timed, some good cuts.

Points to work on: You open up a lot in your set up, as the bowler enters his delivery stride you're almost front on. But I don't see it as too much of a problem because you've got good hands and very few balls are going leg side.

Overall, very good.

Was there any particular reason you really went after one particular bowler? ;) :)
I don't know, it just always happens to someone ;)

From my perspective bowling at you, I thought anything you had room to get your hands through you're pretty comfortable, but if I can cramp you up I'm in business - hence mostly aiming in at your waist or top of off. Trigger is maybe a bit open and a bit forward but doesn't bother me tbh as it plays to your strengths well and you get back quickly enough for the cut. What I would possibly change is the backlift - it's very wide and away from your body, almost towards point, which is what makes it hard to get the bat into line for anything closer to you. I'd give it a go tightening/straightening it up which should make it a lot easier to play those balls. Hope that makes sense, otherwise just keep on putting it away when it's in your area!

Maybe because of your trigger movement which is opening up your toe before the ball is bowled, you are playing most shots front on rather than side on...i guess staying side on longer will help.

I would say 2 things,

1. get in line with the ball  - you seem to be quiet a hands player which is fine because your hitting them well but just on the ones short on the stumps your going back and towards leg stump rather than back and in line with the ball and same thing with front foot as well. At the very least you want to covering your off stump to a ball that on or about off stump.

2. When your hitting lofted hit straight - this gives the full face of the bat which makes it a lot safer also generates the most power. The few that you did try to hit sort of squirted of onto the leg side or just over that old guy "no respect"

I enjoy watching you bat mate, some nice shots in there but what I enjoyed even more was @ppccopener's bowling his follow through is like he's trying to square up to you after you've knocked his pint over :D

Evening everyone
I appreciate it's been a while, but I decided to film myself having a bat on Wednesday.
Admittedly the camera angle wasn't the greatest, might have to try again next week ;) but enjoy nonetheless

Is this a bowling machine this time?  Looks a lot more consistent delivery than other vids.

Look to have a very good eye to me.

Props to the WK as well standing up with no pads!

No was not a bowling machine, and the keeper was quite ballsy as he decided to stand up in the seamers net not the spinners!
