Title: Worthy addition to bat collection?
Post by: Chalkie on November 10, 2016, 05:51:00 PM

Picked up this Classic Bat Company 'Rapier' earlier this week, was an impulse buy as I liked the stickers. Can't find out much On CBC other than a couple of threads on here that seem to focus on the Butterfly model, and sounds like they closed down around 10 yrs ago.

This one is a lovely traditional shape with nice stickers, a fairly thick handle and only weighs 2lb 7.5. It's in pretty good condition for its age and looks like decent willow, although it's a little difficult to tell as there seems to be a factory applied lacquer all over the bat which has crazed on the face due to use (see last photo).

I would like some advice please - I don't plan to use it, so is this one that would be a good addition to any respectable bat collection so I should hang on to it, or am I best off refurbishing (around the stickers) and popping it on a selling site?

If you plan to sell on,  I wouldn't refurb it.

Great find.

Hard to find any trace online, but they're definitely still going (I assume) as a lad I know bought one new last winter. Always seem to be spoken well of around the Bristol/North Som neck of the woods from years back, no idea if there's enough of a following to get a good price for a collector now though. Looks a nice bat although lacquer is weird.

Their Butterfly was a great bat back in 95 . Their 'sponsorship' program was b.s though .

Small address sticker on the back says - Classic Bat Company - 53 High Street,  Keynsham.

That doesn't mean that was where it was made, does it?

Take M&H, TONs of things to suggest they aren't, but the sticker says "made in England"  ;)

I don't recall saying that was where the bat was made.

Nothing on the bat says made in England. Others (including you) have suggested that they may have been made by Warsop

I remember this lot from the early 90s - when they made a double faced bat.  Quite what they thought the idea was I have no idea, but they proved that it was *entirely* possible to make a bat that picked up 6oz heavier than its literal weight!
